Balms
Balms are a unique category of consumable items in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, primarily used to inflict status conditions on wild Pokémon, making them easier to catch. Unlike traditional status-inflicting items that are thrown, Balms are designed to be used in conjunction with your Pokémon's attacks or thrown directly at a wild Pokémon from a distance.
The primary purpose of Balms is to weaken and incapacitate wild Pokémon without directly engaging them in a full battle. This is particularly useful for catching Pokémon that are skittish, aggressive, or difficult to approach. By applying a status effect like Sleep or Paralysis, you can create an opening to throw a Poké Ball or to get closer for a stealthy capture. Balms are crafted using various ingredients found throughout the Hisui region.
There are several types of Balms, each designed to inflict a specific status condition:
- Smoke Bomb: While not technically a Balm, Smoke Bombs function similarly by creating a cloud of smoke that allows you to approach Pokémon undetected. They are essential for stealthy captures.
- Sticky Glob: This Balm inflicts the Paralysis status condition on a target Pokémon. Paralyzed Pokémon have a chance to be unable to move during their turn, making them easier to catch.
- Gusty Ball: This Balm inflicts the Gusty status condition, which can cause a Pokémon to flinch or become disoriented, interrupting their actions.
- Soothing Balm: This Balm inflicts the Sleep status condition. Sleeping Pokémon are vulnerable and cannot attack, providing a prime opportunity for capture.
- Poison Balm: Inflicts the Poison status condition, which gradually damages the target Pokémon over time.
How to Use Balms:
- Crafting: You'll need to learn the recipes for each Balm and gather the necessary ingredients. Common ingredients include various berries, seeds, and other natural components.
- Equipping: Balms are typically found in your item pouch and can be selected from the item menu during exploration or battle.
- Application: You can throw Balms directly at a wild Pokémon from a distance. The effectiveness and range can vary. Some Balms might also be usable as part of a Pokémon's attack sequence, depending on the move.
- Strategic Use: Use Balms when you want to avoid a direct fight, when a Pokémon is particularly aggressive, or when you need to create an opening for a precise Poké Ball throw. For example, using a Soothing Balm to put a fast-moving Pokémon to sleep can be incredibly effective.
Balms are a crucial tool for any trainer looking to master the art of Pokémon capture in Legends: Arceus. They offer a tactical advantage, allowing for more controlled and efficient encounters, especially with rarer or more dangerous Pokémon. Mastering their crafting and application will significantly improve your ability to fill out your Pokédex and complete your research tasks.
