Challenge Gym Leaders Again
Once you've proven yourself as the Champion of the Kanto region, a new challenge awaits! You can now re-challenge all eight Gym Leaders, but with a significant twist: their teams are stronger, their Pokémon are higher-leveled, and their strategies are more refined. This is an excellent way to earn extra experience, gain valuable items, and test your mettle against Kanto's finest once more.
Unlocking the Rematches
To unlock the ability to re-challenge Gym Leaders, you must first:
- Defeat the Elite Four: Successfully conquer the Pokémon League and become the Champion.
- Return to the Gyms: After becoming Champion, simply visit any Gym Leader in their respective Gym. They will now be ready for a rematch.
General Strategies for Rematches
The Gym Leaders' Pokémon will be in the Level 55-60 range, so ensure your team is adequately leveled and has a diverse range of moves to counter their types. Here are some general tips:
- Type Advantage is Key: More than ever, exploiting type weaknesses is crucial. Review each Gym Leader's primary type and prepare your team accordingly.
- Status Conditions: Moves like Sleep, Paralysis, and Poison can turn the tide of battle, especially against high-HP Pokémon.
- Held Items: equip your Pokémon with useful held items like Choice Scarf for speed, Life Orb for increased damage (at a cost), or Leftovers for passive recovery.
- Mega Evolution: If you have a Key Stone and a Mega Stone for one of your Pokémon, utilize Mega Evolution to gain a significant power boost.
- Healing Items: Stock up on Full Restores, Max Potions, and Revives from any Poké Mart. These battles can be grueling!
Individual Gym Leader Rematch Guides
Brock (Pewter City Gym)
- Type: Rock
- Recommended Pokémon Types: Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground.
- Key Pokémon: His team will feature stronger Rock-types like Golem and Onix, likely with higher stats and more diverse movesets.
- Strategy: Lead with a strong Water or Grass-type Pokémon. Be wary of any Ground-type moves his Pokémon might know, which can be super effective against Electric-types.
Misty (Cerulean City Gym)
- Type: Water
- Recommended Pokémon Types: Electric, Grass.
- Key Pokémon: Expect a powerful Starmie, along with other Water-types such as Lapras or Vaporeon.
- Strategy: An Electric-type like Jolteon or Zapdos will dominate here. Grass-types are also effective, but watch out for Ice Beam from Starmie or Lapras.
Lt. Surge (Vermilion City Gym)
- Type: Electric
- Recommended Pokémon Types: Ground.
- Key Pokémon: Raichu will be a formidable opponent, potentially alongside Electabuzz or Jolteon.
- Strategy: A strong Ground-type like Rhydon, Golem, or even a Dugtrio will make short work of Surge's team. Remember that Ground-type moves have no effect on Flying-type Pokémon, but Surge's team is typically pure Electric.
Erika (Celadon City Gym)
- Type: Grass
- Recommended Pokémon Types: Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, Bug.
- Key Pokémon: Her signature Vileplume will be tougher, and she might add Pokémon like Tangela or Victreebel.
- Strategy: Fire-type Pokémon are your best bet. Flying and Ice-types are also highly effective. Be cautious of Sleep Powder or Stun Spore.
Koga (Fuchsia City Gym)
- Type: Poison
- Recommended Pokémon Types: Psychic, Ground.
- Key Pokémon: Expect a strong Weezing and Muk, potentially with other Poison-types like Arbok.
- Strategy: Psychic-type Pokémon will be your primary attackers. Ground-types are also very effective, especially against Muk. Be prepared for status conditions like Poison.
Sabrina (Saffron City Gym)
- Type: Psychic
- Recommended Pokémon Types: Bug, Ghost, Dark (though Dark-type moves are limited in Let's Go).
- Key Pokémon: Alakazam will be incredibly fast and powerful. She may also use Slowbro or Jynx.
- Strategy: This can be one of the trickier rematches. Focus on strong Bug-type moves (e.g., from a Scyther or Pinsir) or Ghost-type moves. A powerful physical attacker can also work if it can outspeed or tank hits.
Blaine (Cinnabar Island Gym)
- Type: Fire
- Recommended Pokémon Types: Water, Ground, Rock.
- Key Pokémon: His Arcanine and Rapidash will hit hard. Expect other Fire-types like Magmar.
- Strategy: Bring your strongest Water and Ground-type Pokémon. Rock-type moves are also super effective. Be mindful of their high Attack stats.
Giovanni (Viridian City Gym)
- Type: Ground
- Recommended Pokémon Types: Water, Grass, Ice.
- Key Pokémon: His Rhydon will be a beast, and he'll likely have other powerful Ground-types like Dugtrio or Nidoking/Nidoqueen.
- Strategy: Water and Grass-type Pokémon are your best friends here. Ice-type moves also deal super effective damage. Be prepared for powerful physical attacks from his team.
