Once you have successfully collected all eight Gym Badges from across the Kanto region, your journey will lead you back to Viridian City. From Viridian City, you must head west onto Route 22. This route serves as a critical precursor to the ultimate challenge, as it is here that you will encounter your Rival for what is considered their final, climactic battle before you face the Elite Four. This battle is a true test of your growth and the strength of your team throughout your adventure.

Following your confrontation with your Rival on Route 22, you will continue your westward progression onto Route 23. This route is characterized by its lengthy and winding path, presenting a more arduous trek than many you have traversed before. A unique feature of Route 23 is the presence of several checkpoints. At these checkpoints, you will be required to present specific Gym Badges to the guards stationed there, demonstrating your mastery over each Gym Leader. Failure to possess the required badges will prevent your further advancement. In addition to these checkpoints, Route 23 is also populated with a number of trainers who will challenge you, further testing your team's mettle and providing opportunities for last-minute experience gains before the Elite Four.

The journey through Route 22 and Route 23 is designed to be a final gauntlet. It's essential to ensure your Pokémon are at a high level, have learned their most powerful moves, and are fully healed before entering these routes. Consider stocking up on healing items and Revives from the nearest Poké Mart. The battles on these routes, especially the one against your Rival, can be demanding.
