Move Tutors and Move Relearner

As you journey through the Hoenn region, you'll encounter various NPCs who can help your Pokémon learn new moves or remember old ones. These services are invaluable for optimizing your team's battle capabilities, whether you're aiming for competitive play or simply want to fine-tune your favorite Pokémon's moveset.

The Move Relearner

The Move Relearner is an essential NPC for any trainer looking to customize their Pokémon's moves. This kind individual can help your Pokémon remember any move it could have learned at a previous level, including moves it might have forgotten or never learned due to evolution or other circumstances.

  • Location: The Move Relearner resides in a house on the northern side of Fallarbor Town. You can't miss it – it's the house with a sign depicting a Poké Ball.
  • Cost: To relearn a move, you'll need to provide one Heart Scale per move. Heart Scales are rare items found throughout Hoenn.
  • Heart Scale Acquisition:
    • Diving: Many Heart Scales can be found as hidden items in underwater areas using the Dive HM. Explore areas like Route 124, Route 126, and the Seafloor Cavern thoroughly.
    • Rock Smashing: Occasionally, breaking rocks with the Rock Smash HM can yield Heart Scales.
    • Wild Luvdisc: The most reliable method for farming Heart Scales is to catch or use the move Thief on wild Luvdisc. Luvdisc have a 50% chance of holding a Heart Scale. You can find Luvdisc by fishing with a Super Rod in areas like Route 124 and Route 128.
  • Strategy: Before evolving a Pokémon, consider if it learns any powerful moves at lower levels that you want to retain. If it does, you can evolve it and then visit the Move Relearner to teach it those moves. This is particularly useful for Pokémon with strong pre-evolution moves.

Move Tutors

Move Tutors are special NPCs who can teach specific, powerful moves to your Pokémon. Unlike TMs, these moves often cannot be learned through leveling up or by other means. Many of these moves are "ultimate" attacks or provide unique strategic advantages. Most Move Tutors require Battle Points (BP) as payment, which you earn in the Battle Maison.

Battle Resort Move Tutors

After defeating the Elite Four and completing the Delta Episode, you'll gain access to the Battle Resort. Here, you'll find a concentration of Move Tutors offering a wide array of powerful moves.

  • Location: The Battle Resort is located east of Pacifidlog Town and can be accessed via Soar or surfing. The Move Tutors are found in various huts and buildings around the island.
  • Payment: All Battle Resort Move Tutors require Battle Points (BP). You earn BP by challenging trainers in the Battle Maison, also located on the Battle Resort.
  • Available Moves (Examples):
    • Elemental Punches (Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch): Taught by a tutor in a house on the eastern side of the island. Excellent coverage moves for many physical attackers.
    • Drain Punch: Taught by a tutor near the Battle Maison. A fighting-type move that restores HP.
    • Superpower: Taught by a tutor in the southwestern part of the island. A powerful fighting-type move that lowers the user's Attack and Defense.
    • Iron Head: Taught by a tutor in the northern part of the island. A strong steel-type move with a chance to flinch.
    • Outrage: Taught by a tutor near the Battle Maison. A devastating dragon-type move that locks the user into the move for 2-3 turns and then confuses them.
    • Giga Drain: Taught by a tutor in the southeastern part of the island. A powerful grass-type move that restores HP.
    • Stealth Rock: Taught by a tutor in the northern part of the island. A crucial entry hazard move for competitive play.
    • Defog: Taught by a tutor in the northern part of the island. Removes entry hazards and screens.
    • Knock Off: Taught by a tutor in the southwestern part of the island. A dark-type move that removes the opponent's held item.
    • Tailwind: Taught by a tutor in the southeastern part of the island. Boosts the speed of your entire team for a few turns.
  • Strategy: Prioritize earning BP in the Battle Maison. Consider which moves would best complement your Pokémon's stats and role on your team. Moves like Stealth Rock, Knock Off, and the elemental punches are often highly sought after for competitive teams.

Special Move Tutors

Beyond the Battle Resort, a few other unique Move Tutors exist in Hoenn:

  • Pledge Moves (Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, Water Pledge):
    • Location: In Mauville City, inside the Mauville Hills apartment complex (the large building in the center of the city). Take the elevator to the second floor.
    • Requirements: You must have a fully evolved Grass, Fire, or Water-type starter Pokémon (or their pre-evolutions).
    • Cost: Free.
    • Strategy: These moves are powerful in Double Battles when used together, creating a combined effect (e.g., Fire Pledge + Grass Pledge creates a fiery field that damages opponents).
  • Draco Meteor, Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon:
    • Location: In Sootopolis City, speak to the old man near the gym entrance.
    • Requirements: Your Pokémon must have maximum friendship with you and be a fully evolved Dragon-type (for Draco Meteor) or a fully evolved starter Pokémon (for the other three).
    • Cost: Free.
    • Strategy: These are incredibly powerful moves, but they come with a drawback: they sharply lower the user's Special Attack after use. Use them strategically as a finishing blow.

Utilizing both the Move Relearner and the various Move Tutors is crucial for building a well-rounded and powerful team in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Don't underestimate the strategic depth these services add to your gameplay!
