Super Training

Super Training is an invaluable feature in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire that allows you to directly influence your Pokémon's Effort Values (EVs). EVs are hidden stats that significantly boost a Pokémon's performance in specific areas like Attack, Defense, Speed, etc. Unlike traditional EV training through battling, Super Training offers a fun, mini-game-based approach that is both efficient and transparent.

Accessing Super Training

You can access Super Training at any time through the bottom screen of your Nintendo 3DS. Simply tap the "Super Training" icon. This will bring up a screen showing your active Pokémon and a series of training options.

Understanding the Basics

  • Effort Values (EVs): Each Pokémon can accumulate a total of 510 EVs, with a maximum of 252 EVs in any single stat. Every 4 EVs in a stat translates to 1 additional stat point at Level 100.
  • Super Training Bags: These are items that provide instant EV gains. You can earn them by completing Super Training regimens or by having your Pokémon hit the punching bag in the main Super Training screen.
  • Core Training: This is the primary mode where you play mini-games to earn EVs.
  • Secret Super Training: Unlocked after fully EV training a Pokémon (510 EVs total), these offer more challenging mini-games and better rewards, including valuable evolutionary stones and rare items.

Core Training Walkthrough

Core Training involves shooting soccer balls at giant Pokémon balloons. Each regimen focuses on a specific stat and has three difficulty levels. Completing a regimen awards EVs for that stat, along with potential Super Training Bags.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Select Your Pokémon: On the Super Training screen, tap the Pokémon you wish to train.
  2. Choose a Stat: Tap the "Core Training" button. You'll see a grid of training regimens, each corresponding to a specific stat (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed).
  3. Pick a Difficulty: Each stat has three difficulty levels. Higher difficulties award more EVs but are more challenging.
    • Level 1: Awards 1-2 EVs. Good for precise training or starting out.
    • Level 2: Awards 4-5 EVs. A good balance of difficulty and reward.
    • Level 3: Awards 10-12 EVs. Most efficient for maxing out a stat quickly.
  4. Play the Mini-Game:
    • Use the Circle Pad or D-Pad to move your Pokémon.
    • Tap the screen to shoot soccer balls. Hold to charge for a more powerful shot.
    • Aim for the targets on the balloon Pokémon. Yellow targets are worth more points.
    • Avoid incoming projectiles from the balloon Pokémon.
    • The goal is to deplete the balloon's HP within the time limit.
  5. Monitor Your Progress: The bar on the right side of the screen shows your Pokémon's current EV distribution. The yellow segments indicate current EVs, and the green segments show potential EV gains from the current training session. A sparkling bar indicates a stat is maxed (252 EVs).
  6. Repeat: Continue training in your desired stats until you reach the desired EV spread (e.g., 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 6 HP).

Using Super Training Bags

Super Training Bags are incredibly useful for quick EV gains or fine-tuning your EV spread. To use them:

  1. On the main Super Training screen, tap the "Bag" icon in the bottom right corner.
  2. This will show you all the Super Training Bags you've collected.
  3. Tap a bag to use it. Your Pokémon will hit the bag, and you'll see the EV gain immediately.
  4. Types of Bags:
    • HP Bag, Attack Bag, Defense Bag, Sp. Atk Bag, Sp. Def Bag, Speed Bag: Each awards +1 EV to its respective stat.
    • Small Bag: Awards +1 EV to a random stat.
    • Medium Bag: Awards +4 EVs to a random stat.
    • Large Bag: Awards +12 EVs to a random stat.
    • Reset Bag: Crucially, this bag resets all of your Pokémon's EVs to zero. This is essential if you make a mistake or want to re-train a Pokémon. You can obtain Reset Bags rarely from Secret Super Training or by having your Pokémon hit the default punching bag for a long time.

Secret Super Training

Once a Pokémon has reached its maximum 510 EVs, a new set of challenges called "Secret Super Training" will unlock for that specific Pokémon. These are more difficult regimens but offer superior rewards.

Benefits of Secret Super Training:

  • Rare Items: You can earn valuable items such as evolutionary stones (e.g., Fire Stone, Water Stone, Thunder Stone, Leaf Stone, Moon Stone, Sun Stone, Dawn Stone, Dusk Stone, Shiny Stone), Rare Candies, and even the elusive Reset Bag.
  • Increased Challenge: These mini-games are designed to test your precision and reflexes, offering a satisfying challenge after mastering Core Training.

Tips for Efficient Super Training

  • Prioritize Stats: Decide which stats you want to maximize for your Pokémon's role (e.g., a physical attacker will want Attack and Speed).
  • Use Level 3 Regimens: For quick EV gains, always aim for the Level 3 regimens once you're comfortable with the mechanics.
  • Charge Your Shots: Charged shots deal more damage to the balloon Pokémon, speeding up completion times.
  • Dodge Effectively: Learn the patterns of incoming projectiles to avoid being stunned, which wastes valuable time.
  • Utilize Reset Bags: Don't be afraid to use a Reset Bag if you mess up your EV spread. It's better to start fresh than have a sub-optimal Pokémon.
  • Passive Bag Collection: While you're doing other things in the game, leave your Pokémon on the Super Training screen hitting the default punching bag. It will occasionally find Super Training Bags, including the valuable Reset Bag.
