Elite Four Rematches
Congratulations, Champion! Defeating the Elite Four and Steven Stone for the first time is a monumental achievement. However, your journey in Hoenn is far from over. After completing the Delta Episode, the Elite Four and Champion will power up their teams significantly, offering a fresh and challenging experience for seasoned trainers. These rematches are an excellent way to test your battle strategies, earn substantial experience, and gather valuable funds.
Preparation is Key
Before challenging the revamped Elite Four, thorough preparation is paramount. Their Pokémon will be at much higher levels (ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s), often holding powerful items, and utilizing more strategic movesets. Here’s what you should focus on:
- Level Up Your Team: Aim for your primary battling Pokémon to be at least Level 80. The Battle Resort is an excellent place for grinding experience, especially against trainers in the Battle Maison or by using the Exp. Share during wild encounters.
- Optimize Movesets: Review your Pokémon's moves. Ensure they have a diverse range of attacks to cover various types, and consider TMs for powerful, high-accuracy moves. Don't forget status-inflicting moves like Thunder Wave or Will-O-Wisp for strategic advantage.
- Hold Items: Equip your Pokémon with appropriate hold items. Life Orbs, Choice Scarf/Band/Specs, Assault Vests, Leftovers, and various Mega Stones will be crucial. For example, a Mega Metagross holding its Metagrossite can sweep through many opponents.
- Stock Up on Consumables: Visit the Poké Mart in Lilycove City or Mauville City. Purchase plenty of Full Restores, Max Potions, Revives, Full Heals, and Ethers/Max Ethers. These will be indispensable for enduring the gauntlet.
- Affection Boosts: Maxing out Pokémon-Amie affection with your team can provide in-battle benefits like increased critical hit rates, surviving otherwise fatal blows, and shaking off status conditions.
The Rematch Gauntlet
The structure of the Elite Four challenge remains the same: Sidney, Phoebe, Glacia, Drake, and finally, Champion Steven Stone. However, their teams are completely overhauled. Be ready for Mega Evolutions from every Elite Four member and Steven!
Elite Four Sidney (Dark-type Specialist)
Sidney's team gets a significant boost, with his Mega Absol leading the charge. Focus on Fairy, Fighting, and Bug-type attacks.
- Key Pokémon:
- Mega Absol: High Attack and Speed, often carrying Play Rough or Sucker Punch.
- Sharpedo: Fast and powerful, watch out for Speed Boost.
- Shiftry: Grass/Dark, susceptible to Fire, Flying, Bug, Poison, Ice, and Fighting.
- Tyranitar: Rock/Dark, brings Sand Stream, making it vulnerable to Fighting, Ground, Water, Grass, Bug, Steel, and Fairy.
- Strategy: A strong Fighting-type like Mega Blaziken or a Fairy-type like Gardevoir (especially Mega Gardevoir) can make quick work of his team. Be wary of Sucker Punch from Absol and Sharpedo.
Elite Four Phoebe (Ghost-type Specialist)
Phoebe's spectral team becomes even more menacing, with her Mega Banette being a standout. Dark and Ghost-type moves are your best bet.
- Key Pokémon:
- Mega Banette: Prankster ability can be troublesome with status moves.
- Dusknoir: Bulky, often carries Trick Room.
- Sableye: Dark/Ghost, only weak to Fairy-type moves.
- Chandelure: Ghost/Fire, vulnerable to Ground, Rock, Ghost, Water, and Dark.
- Strategy: A powerful Dark-type like Mega Tyranitar or a Ghost-type of your own (e.g., Gengar) can be effective. Consider a fast Pokémon with a strong Dark-type attack to outspeed and one-shot Banette before it can set up.
Elite Four Glacia (Ice-type Specialist)
Glacia's icy Pokémon are formidable, with her Mega Glalie capable of dishing out massive damage. Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel-type attacks are your go-to.
- Key Pokémon:
- Mega Glalie: High Attack and Special Attack, often uses Freeze-Dry.
- Froslass: Ice/Ghost, fast and can use Spikes.
- Walrein: Ice/Water, bulky with Thick Fat.
- Weavile: Dark/Ice, incredibly fast and hits hard.
- Strategy: A strong Fire-type (Mega Charizard X/Y, Arcanine), a Fighting-type (Machamp, Lucario), or a Steel-type (Metagross, Skarmory) will be invaluable. Be prepared for Hail damage and potential freezes.
Elite Four Drake (Dragon-type Specialist)
Drake's dragons are now truly legendary, with his Mega Salamence being a terrifying force. Ice and Fairy-type moves are your absolute best counters.
- Key Pokémon:
- Mega Salamence: Aerilate ability makes Return and Double-Edge devastating Flying-type moves.
- Kingdra: Water/Dragon, often uses Swift Swim in rain.
- Flygon: Ground/Dragon, susceptible to Ice, Dragon, and Fairy.
- Haxorus: Pure Dragon, incredibly high Attack.
- Strategy: A powerful Ice-type (e.g., Kyurem, Mamoswine with Ice Shard) or a Fairy-type (Mega Gardevoir, Togekiss) is almost mandatory. Be extremely cautious of Mega Salamence's Aerilate-boosted attacks; a strong Ice Beam or Moonblast is your best bet to take it down quickly.
Champion Steven Stone (Steel-type Specialist)
Steven's team, already powerful, reaches new heights. His Mega Metagross is a beast, and his other Pokémon are equally threatening. Fire and Ground-type attacks are your primary weapons, with Fighting-type also being effective against some of his team.
- Key Pokémon:
- Mega Metagross: Tough Claw ability boosts contact moves, incredibly fast after Mega Evolving.
- Skarmory: Physical wall, often sets up Spikes.
- Cradily: Rock/Grass, Storm Drain can absorb Water-type attacks.
- Aggron: Rock/Steel, very high Defense.
- Aerodactyl: Rock/Flying, extremely fast.
- Claydol: Ground/Psychic, can use Light Screen/Reflect.
- Strategy: A strong Fire-type (Mega Charizard Y for sun-boosted attacks, Heatran) or Ground-type (Groudon, Excadrill) will be crucial. A Fighting-type can also help against Metagross and Aggron. Be prepared for a long battle, as Steven uses Full Restores strategically. Taking down Mega Metagross quickly is your top priority.
Rewards and Replayability
Successfully defeating the Elite Four and Champion Steven in rematches will earn you significant prize money and experience for your Pokémon. While there isn't a unique item reward for each rematch, the challenge itself and the satisfaction of overcoming stronger opponents are their own rewards. You can rematch the Elite Four as many times as you wish, making it a fantastic way to train new Pokémon or test out different team compositions in the post-game.
