Wally Rematches
After you've conquered the Pokémon League and become the Champion of Hoenn, your journey is far from over! One of the most exciting post-game challenges is the opportunity to rematch your friendly rival, Wally. These aren't just ordinary battles; Wally's team grows stronger and more strategically diverse with each encounter, providing a true test of your Pokémon training prowess.
Unlocking Wally Rematches
To initiate rematches with Wally, you must first complete the Delta Episode. Once the credits roll after the Delta Episode, Wally will return to his home in Mauville City. However, he won't be ready for a rematch immediately.
- Complete the Delta Episode: Ensure you have fully finished the post-game story arc.
- Enter the Hall of Fame again: After completing the Delta Episode, you'll need to defeat the Elite Four and Champion Steven Stone one more time to officially update your Hall of Fame record.
- Locate Wally: Head to Mauville City and visit Wally's apartment on the second floor of the Mauville City Pokémon Center building. You'll find him in his room.
- The First Challenge: Speak to Wally. He will express his desire to battle you again. Accept his challenge to begin the rematch series.
Wally's Team Progression
Wally's team evolves significantly, increasing in level and adding new Pokémon as you defeat him. He will always lead with his signature Pokémon, Mega Gallade (in Omega Ruby) or Mega Gardevoir (in Alpha Sapphire), making these battles a fantastic opportunity to test your Mega Evolution strategies.
Rematch 1: Victory Road Veteran
After your first post-Delta Episode Hall of Fame entry, Wally's team will be around Level 60-65. This initial rematch serves as a good warm-up for the tougher challenges ahead.
- Location: Wally's room in Mauville City.
- Key Pokémon:
- Mega Gallade/Gardevoir: Still his ace, expect powerful Psychic/Fighting or Psychic/Fairy attacks.
- Roserade: A strong Special Attacker with Grass/Poison typing.
- Talonflame: Fast Fire/Flying type, often carrying Gale Wings for priority Brave Bird.
- Garchomp: A menacing Dragon/Ground physical attacker.
- Magikarp: (Yes, really!) This is a joke Pokémon, easily defeated. Don't let it fool you into complacency for the rest of his team!
- Strategy: Focus on type advantages against his core team. Ice-type moves are excellent against Garchomp and Roserade. Rock-type moves will deal with Talonflame. Dark or Ghost types can handle his Mega Evolution.
Rematch 2: Champion's Disciple
After defeating Wally once and entering the Hall of Fame again, his team will power up further, reaching levels in the mid-70s. He also replaces Magikarp with a more formidable opponent.
- Location: Wally's room in Mauville City.
- Key Pokémon:
- Mega Gallade/Gardevoir: Even stronger, prepare for devastating STAB attacks.
- Roserade: Remains a threat.
- Talonflame: Still a priority threat.
- Garchomp: Continues to be a powerhouse.
- Staraptor: A new addition, a fast Normal/Flying physical attacker.
- Arcanine: A versatile Fire-type with good offensive and defensive stats.
- Strategy: Your team should be well into the Level 80s or 90s to comfortably handle this. Consider Pokémon with good defensive typing or those that can outspeed and one-shot his threats. Entry hazards like Stealth Rock can chip away at his Pokémon, especially Talonflame.
Rematch 3 and Beyond: The Ultimate Rival
Subsequent rematches (after entering the Hall of Fame multiple times) will see Wally's team reach its peak, with all Pokémon in the Level 80s and 90s. His team composition will remain consistent with the "Champion's Disciple" lineup, but their stats will be maximized.
- Location: Wally's room in Mauville City.
- Key Pokémon: All Pokémon from Rematch 2, but at higher levels.
- Strategy:
- Type Coverage is King: Ensure your team has a wide range of offensive types to hit all of Wally's Pokémon super effectively.
- Speed Control: Wally's team is generally fast. Consider using Pokémon with high Speed stats, or those that can utilize Trick Room or paralysis to gain an advantage.
- Defensive Pivots: Have Pokémon that can switch into hits from his powerful attackers, like a bulky Water-type for Arcanine or an Electric-type for Talonflame.
- Mega Evolution Counter: Your own Mega Evolution should be ready to go. Consider a Mega that can either outspeed and OHKO his Mega or tank its hits effectively.
- Item Usage: Don't be afraid to use battle items like X Attacks, X Defenses, or Full Restores if you find yourself in a tight spot.
- Status Conditions: Inflicting status conditions like paralysis, burn, or sleep can greatly hinder Wally's team.
Rewards for Victory
While the primary reward for defeating Wally is the satisfaction of overcoming a challenging opponent and seeing your rival grow, you also receive a decent amount of prize money for each victory. It's a great way to earn cash for purchasing items or developing your Secret Base!
Keep training, keep battling, and prove that you are the true Pokémon Champion of Hoenn!
