Berries & Berry Farming
Berries are incredibly versatile items in Pokémon Platinum, offering everything from in-battle healing and status cures to Poffin ingredients and even EV-reducing properties. Mastering Berry farming is a fantastic way to ensure you always have a steady supply of these invaluable items, saving you money and opening up new strategic options.
Getting Started with Berry Farming
To begin your journey as a Berry farmer, you'll need the right tools and knowledge. The process is straightforward but requires consistent attention.
The Berry Pot
Your primary tool for mobile Berry farming is the Berry Pot. You receive this key item from a kind lady inside the house directly to the right of the Pokémon Center in Floaroma Town. The Berry Pot allows you to carry and cultivate up to four Berry plants simultaneously, regardless of your location. This is crucial for maximizing your Berry yield as you travel across Sinnoh.
Planting Berries
Once you have the Berry Pot, planting is simple:
- Open your Bag and navigate to the "Key Items" pocket.
- Select the Berry Pot.
- Choose an empty slot in the Berry Pot.
- Select the Berry you wish to plant from your "Berries" pocket.
- Confirm your selection.
You can also plant Berries directly into designated Berry patches found throughout Sinnoh. These patches are typically marked by darker soil squares. Simply stand next to an empty patch, open your Bag, select a Berry, and choose "Plant."
Nurturing Your Berries
Berries don't just grow on their own; they require care to flourish. Neglecting your plants can lead to reduced yields or even withered plants.
Watering Your Plants
The most important aspect of Berry care is watering. Plants in both your Berry Pot and outdoor patches need regular watering. You'll know a plant needs water if its leaves appear slightly drooped or if the soil around it looks dry.
- Berry Pot: Select the Berry Pot from your Key Items, then choose the plant you wish to water.
- Outdoor Patches: Stand next to the plant, open your Bag, and select the Squirtbottle from your "Key Items" pocket.
The Squirtbottle is given to you by a woman in the flower shop in Floaroma Town after you defeat Team Galactic at the Valley Windworks. It has infinite uses, so don't worry about running out.
Pro Tip: Berries grow in real-world time. Check on your plants frequently, especially if you're playing over several days. A good rule of thumb is to water them every few hours of active gameplay, or at least once per real-world day.
Mulch: Boosting Your Harvest
Mulch is a special item that can be applied to outdoor Berry patches to influence Berry growth. You can purchase various types of Mulch from the Berry Master's wife on Route 208, near the entrance to Mt. Coronet. Each Mulch costs 200 Pokedollars and has a unique effect:
- Growth Mulch: Makes Berries grow faster, reducing their harvest time. Ideal for quick turnarounds on common Berries.
- Damp Mulch: Increases the time it takes for Berries to grow, but also extends the period before the soil dries out, reducing the need for frequent watering. Useful if you can't check on your game often.
- Stable Mulch: Increases the maximum number of Berries a plant can yield. Excellent for maximizing your harvest of rarer Berries.
- Rich Mulch: Increases the chance of a planted Berry producing more Berries than usual, potentially leading to a larger harvest.
To use Mulch, stand next to an empty Berry patch, open your Bag, select the Mulch from your "Items" pocket, and choose "Use." Then, plant your Berry as usual.
Harvesting Your Berries
Once your Berries are fully grown, they'll appear as ripe fruit on the plant. To harvest:
- Berry Pot: Select the Berry Pot from your Key Items, then choose the ripe plant and select "Harvest."
- Outdoor Patches: Stand next to the ripe plant and press 'A'.
Each plant will yield a certain number of Berries, which will be added to your "Berries" pocket in the Bag. After harvesting, the plant disappears, leaving an empty patch ready for new seeds.
Key Berry Farming Locations
While the Berry Pot allows mobile farming, several fixed Berry patches are ideal for large-scale cultivation:
- Floaroma Town: Two small patches are available.
- Route 205 (South): A patch near the Honey Trees.
- Route 206: A patch accessible after using Cut.
- Route 207: A small patch near the Cycling Road entrance.
- Route 208: Several patches, including near the Berry Master's house.
- Route 209: A large patch near the Lost Tower.
- Route 210 (South & North): Multiple patches, especially in the foggy northern section.
- Route 211 (West): A patch near Mt. Coronet.
- Route 212 (South & North): Numerous patches, particularly in the rainy southern area.
- Route 213: Several patches along the beach.
- Route 214: Patches near the Ruin Maniac's Cave.
- Route 215: A patch near the bridge.
- Route 218: A small patch near Canalave City.
- Route 221: Patches on the small island.
- Route 222: Patches near Sunyshore City.
- Route 224: Patches on the Seabreak Path.
- Route 229: Patches in the Resort Area.
- Pastoria City: A small patch near the Great Marsh entrance.
- Veilstone City: A patch near the Galactic Veilstone Building.
Prioritize larger patches for growing high-yield or long-growing Berries, and use smaller ones for quick-growing varieties or those you need in smaller quantities.
Berry Uses & Strategies
Berries have a multitude of uses that can significantly impact your gameplay:
- In-Battle Healing: Oran Berry, Sitrus Berry, Leppa Berry. Essential for extending your Pokémon's endurance.
- Status Cures: Cheri Berry (Paralysis), Chesto Berry (Sleep), Pecha Berry (Poison), Rawst Berry (Burn), Aspear Berry (Freeze). Crucial for competitive battles and tough trainers.
- EV Reduction: Specific Berries (e.g., Pomeg Berry, Kelpsy Berry) can reduce a Pokémon's Effort Values (EVs) in a particular stat while increasing its friendship. This is vital for competitive breeding and EV training adjustments.
- Poffin Ingredients: Many Berries are used to make Poffins, which boost a Pokémon's Contest stats (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, Tough). Different Berries contribute different flavors and smoothness.
- Held Items: Giving a Pokémon a Berry to hold can trigger its effect automatically in battle, often at a crucial moment.
- Selling for Profit: While not their primary use, surplus Berries can be sold to vendors for a small profit.
By consistently farming Berries, you'll gain a significant advantage in battles, Contests, and Pokémon customization. Happy farming, Trainer!
