TM/HM Locations & Effects
Technical Machines (TMs) and Hidden Machines (HMs) are invaluable tools in your journey through the Sinnoh region, allowing your Pokémon to learn powerful new moves or grant you access to previously unreachable areas. Unlike TMs, HMs can be used repeatedly and are essential for progression. This comprehensive guide details where to find each TM and HM, along with their effects, to help you become a Pokémon Master!
Hidden Machines (HMs)
HMs are crucial for navigating the world of Sinnoh. They can be used an unlimited number of times once obtained and taught to a compatible Pokémon. Remember, you'll need to earn specific Gym Badges to use HMs outside of battle.
- HM01 Cut
- Effect: A Grass-type physical move with 50 power. Outside of battle, it allows you to clear small trees blocking paths.
- Location: Eterna City. After defeating Gardenia, the Eterna City Gym Leader, head to the Pokémon Center. Cynthia will be waiting there and will give you HM01 Cut.
- Badge Requirement: Forest Badge (Eterna City Gym) to use outside of battle.
- HM02 Fly
- Effect: A Flying-type physical move with 90 power. Outside of battle, it allows you to instantly travel to any previously visited town or city.
- Location: Veilstone City. After defeating Maylene, the Veilstone City Gym Leader, enter the Team Galactic Warehouse in the northeast part of the city. Navigate through the warehouse to find HM02 Fly on the ground.
- Badge Requirement: Cobble Badge (Veilstone City Gym) to use outside of battle.
- HM03 Surf
- Effect: A Water-type special move with 95 power. Outside of battle, it allows you to cross bodies of water.
- Location: Celestic Town. Speak to Cynthia's grandmother in the large ruin in the center of Celestic Town after defeating Jupiter at the Team Galactic Eterna Building and obtaining the Old Charm. She will give you HM03 Surf.
- Badge Requirement: Fen Badge (Pastoria City Gym) to use outside of battle.
- HM04 Strength
- Effect: A Normal-type physical move with 80 power. Outside of battle, it allows you to push large boulders that block paths.
- Location: Lost Tower (Route 209). Ascend to the fifth floor of the Lost Tower. Speak to the elderly woman at the top, and she will give you HM04 Strength.
- Badge Requirement: Mine Badge (Oreburgh City Gym) to use outside of battle.
- HM05 Defog
- Effect: A Flying-type status move that lowers the target's evasion. Outside of battle, it clears fog from routes and caves, improving visibility and battle conditions.
- Location: Great Marsh (Pastoria City). Upon entering the Great Marsh, speak to the Ace Trainer standing near the entrance. He will give you HM05 Defog.
- Badge Requirement: Fen Badge (Pastoria City Gym) to use outside of battle.
- HM06 Rock Smash
- Effect: A Fighting-type physical move with 40 power that has a chance to lower the target's defense. Outside of battle, it allows you to break small, cracked rocks blocking paths.
- Location: Oreburgh Gate. After obtaining your first Gym Badge, speak to the Hiker standing on the ground floor of Oreburgh Gate, just before the path to Route 203. He will give you HM06 Rock Smash.
- Badge Requirement: Coal Badge (Oreburgh City Gym) to use outside of battle.
- HM07 Waterfall
- Effect: A Water-type physical move with 80 power that has a chance to make the target flinch. Outside of battle, it allows you to climb waterfalls.
- Location: Sunyshore City. After defeating Volkner, the Sunyshore City Gym Leader, head to the beach area in the northern part of the city. Jasmine, the Gym Leader from Johto, will be there and will give you HM07 Waterfall.
- Badge Requirement: Beacon Badge (Sunyshore City Gym) to use outside of battle.
- HM08 Rock Climb
- Effect: A Normal-type physical move with 90 power that has a chance to confuse the target. Outside of battle, it allows you to scale jagged rock walls.
- Location: Route 217. In the house near the Ice Rock on Route 217, speak to the Hiker inside. He will give you HM08 Rock Climb. You'll need to navigate through the snowy path and potentially use Defog to find the house easily.
- Badge Requirement: Icicle Badge (Snowpoint City Gym) to use outside of battle.
Technical Machines (TMs)
TMs are single-use items that teach a specific move to a compatible Pokémon. While many can be found throughout the region, some are purchasable or awarded for specific achievements. Plan carefully before using them!
Key TMs and Their Acquisition
This section highlights some of the most impactful TMs and how to acquire them early or through specific events.
- TM01 Focus Punch
- Effect: A Fighting-type physical move with 150 power. It fails if the user is hit before attacking.
- Location: Route 210 (Foggy Area). You'll find this TM hidden in the foggy section of Route 210, accessible after obtaining HM05 Defog. Navigate carefully through the tall grass.
- TM05 Roar
- Effect: A Normal-type status move that forces the target to switch out. In wild battles, it ends the encounter.
- Location: Route 213. Head to the beach area on Route 213, near the Valor Lakefront. You'll find this TM as a hidden item on the sand.
- TM10 Hidden Power
- Effect: A Normal-type special move with variable power and type, depending on the user's IVs.
- Location: Jubilife City. Speak to the TV reporter on the second floor of the Jubilife Condominiums. He will ask you a question; answer "Yes" to receive TM10.
- TM13 Ice Beam
- Effect: An Ice-type special move with 90 power and a 10% chance to freeze the target.
- Location: Route 216. Found on the snowy path of Route 216, near the entrance to Route 217. You'll need to navigate through the deep snow.
- TM14 Blizzard
- Effect: An Ice-type special move with 110 power and a 10% chance to freeze the target. Has reduced accuracy outside of hail.
- Location: Veilstone Department Store. Purchase for 5,500 Poké Dollars on the 3rd floor.
- TM17 Protect
- Effect: A Normal-type status move that shields the user from all attacks for one turn. Its success rate decreases with consecutive uses.
- Location: Veilstone Department Store. Purchase for 2,000 Poké Dollars on the 3rd floor.
- TM24 Thunderbolt
- Effect: An Electric-type special move with 90 power and a 10% chance to paralyze the target.
- Location: Valley Windworks. After defeating Team Galactic at the Valley Windworks and rescuing the scientists, return to the building. You'll find TM24 in a hidden corner.
- TM26 Earthquake
- Effect: A Ground-type physical move with 100 power that hits all adjacent Pokémon. Power is doubled if the target is underground.
- Location: Wayward Cave (Hidden Entrance). From the main entrance of Wayward Cave (under Cycling Road), head north and look for a hidden entrance underneath the Cycling Road bridge. Navigate through this secret section to find TM26. You may need a Pokémon with Flash or good memory of the layout.
- TM27 Return
- Effect: A Normal-type physical move whose power increases with the user's happiness. Max power of 102.
- Location: Veilstone City. Speak to the woman in the house directly south of the Veilstone Gym. She will give you TM27 if your lead Pokémon has high happiness.
- TM29 Psychic
- Effect: A Psychic-type special move with 90 power and a 10% chance to lower the target's Special Defense.
- Location: Route 211 (East entrance). From Eterna City, head east onto Route 211. You'll find TM29 near the entrance to Mount Coronet.
- TM35 Flamethrower
- Effect: A Fire-type special move with 90 power and a 10% chance to burn the target.
- Location: Fuego Ironworks. Navigate through the Fuego Ironworks, using the spinning tiles to reach the northern section. TM35 is located near the back.
- TM38 Fire Blast
- Effect: A Fire-type special move with 110 power and a 10% chance to burn the target. Has reduced accuracy.
- Location: Veilstone Department Store. Purchase for 5,500 Poké Dollars on the 3rd floor.
- TM53 Energy Ball
- Effect: A Grass-type special move with 90 power and a 10% chance to lower the target's Special Defense.
- Location: Great Marsh. After paying the entrance fee, search the various sections of the Great Marsh. TM53 can be found in Area 3 (the northernmost section).
- TM56 Fling
- Effect: A Dark-type physical move whose power and effect depend on the item held by the user. The item is consumed.
- Location: Route 210 (South). Located on the southern part of Route 210, accessible after using Cut to clear a path.
- TM58 Endure
- Effect: A Normal-type status move that allows the user to survive any attack with at least 1 HP if it would otherwise be knocked out.
- Location: Veilstone Department Store. Purchase for 2,000 Poké Dollars on the 3rd floor.
- TM70 Flash
- Effect: A Normal-type status move that lowers the target's accuracy. Outside of battle, it illuminates dark caves.
- Location: Oreburgh Gate. Speak to the Hiker on the lower level of Oreburgh Gate after obtaining the Coal Badge. He will give you TM70.
- TM87 Swagger
- Effect: A Normal-type status move that sharply raises the target's Attack but also confuses it.
- Location: Pokémon Mansion (Route 212). Found in one of the rooms on the ground floor of the Pokémon Mansion.
- TM90 Substitute
- Effect: A Normal-type status move that creates a substitute using 1/4 of the user's max HP. The substitute takes damage for the user.
- Location: Old Chateau (Eterna Forest). After entering the Old Chateau, navigate to the dining room on the first floor. TM90 is located in the corner.
