Oreburgh Gate & Oreburgh City: Your First Gym Challenge Awaits!
Welcome, aspiring Pokémon Trainer! Your journey through Sinnoh continues as you leave Jubilife City behind and head east towards your first major milestone: Oreburgh City. This section will guide you through the initial leg of your adventure, ensuring you're well-prepared to face the challenges ahead, including your first Gym Leader.
Navigating Oreburgh Gate
Your path to Oreburgh City begins by traversing Oreburgh Gate, a short cave connecting Route 203 to the mining town. While seemingly straightforward, this cave holds a few secrets and opportunities you won't want to miss.
- Entrance: From Route 203, head east. You'll spot the cave entrance easily.
- Wild Pokémon Encounters: Inside Oreburgh Gate, you'll primarily encounter Zubat and Geodude.
- Zubat (Levels 5-8): A Flying/Poison-type, Zubat can be a nuisance with Supersonic, but it evolves into the strong Crobat later in the game.
- Geodude (Levels 5-8): A Rock/Ground-type, Geodude is a solid defensive Pokémon. Catching one now can provide a sturdy ally for future battles, especially against Flying-types.
- Items to Collect:
- Potion: As you enter, stick to the upper path. You'll find a Potion near the northern wall.
- Poké Ball: On the lower path, near the eastern exit, there's a hidden Poké Ball. check all nooks and crannies!
- Future Exploration (Post-Rock Smash):
You'll notice several smashable rocks blocking paths within Oreburgh Gate. These require the Hidden Machine (HM) Rock Smash. While you won't have it yet, remember to return here later! Once you do, you can access:
- Machop (Levels 6-9): A powerful Fighting-type Pokémon that can be invaluable for the upcoming Gym Battle. Machop's fighting moves are super effective against Rock-types.
- Additional Items: There are more hidden items behind these rocks, including a Great Ball and a TM98 (Rock Smash) itself, though you'll typically receive the HM from an NPC first.
Arriving in Oreburgh City
Upon exiting Oreburgh Gate, you'll step into the bustling mining town of Oreburgh City. This is your first major hub, offering essential services and your first Gym challenge.
- Pokémon Center: Your first stop should always be the Pokémon Center. Heal your weary team and stock up on any necessary supplies. The Nurse Joy here is ready to assist!
- Poké Mart: Located next to the Pokémon Center, the Poké Mart offers a standard selection of items. Now is a good time to buy a few extra Potions and Poké Balls if you're running low.
- Oreburgh Mining Museum: To the north of the city, you'll find the Mining Museum. While not immediately crucial for progression, it offers interesting lore about Sinnoh's mining history. You can also revive Fossils here later in the game.
- Oreburgh Gym: The Gym is located in the southeastern part of the city. However, you won't be able to challenge Roark just yet.
Meeting Roark & Obtaining Rock Smash
Before you can face Oreburgh City's Gym Leader, Roark, you need to find him. He's currently busy in the Oreburgh Mine, located just south of the city.
- Head to Oreburgh Mine: From the city center, walk south. You'll see the entrance to the mine.
- Locate Roark: Descend into the mine. Roark is hard to miss; he's standing near a large rock formation, demonstrating the power of Rock Smash.
- The Rock Smash HM: After a brief conversation, Roark will return to his Gym. More importantly, an NPC near the mine entrance (a Hiker) will now give you HM06 (Rock Smash)!
- Teaching Rock Smash: HM06 can be taught to many Pokémon, including Geodude, Machop, and Bidoof. While it's a relatively weak battle move, it's essential for clearing obstacles on the field. You'll need to teach it to a Pokémon to use it outside of battle.
Important Note: You cannot use Rock Smash outside of battle until you have defeated Roark and earned the Coal Badge. So, while you have the HM, its utility for clearing paths in Oreburgh Gate is still a little ways off.
Challenging Roark: The Coal Badge
With Roark back in his Gym and HM06 in hand, it's time to prepare for your first official Gym Battle!
Roark's Team & Strategy
Roark specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. This means they are strong defensively but have several key weaknesses. His team consists of:
| Pokémon | Level | Type | Key Moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geodude | Lv. 12 | Rock/Ground | Rock Throw, Defense Curl |
| Onix | Lv. 12 | Rock/Ground | Rock Throw, Harden, Bind |
| Cranidos | Lv. 14 | Rock | Headbutt, Leer, Pursuit |
Weaknesses: Rock-type Pokémon are weak to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, and Steel-type moves. They are resistant to Fire, Flying, Normal, and Poison-type moves.
Recommended Pokémon & Strategy
Your starter choice significantly impacts this battle:
- Piplup (Water-type): If you chose Piplup, you're in an excellent position! Its Water-type moves (Bubble, Water Gun) will be super effective against all of Roark's Pokémon. Evolve it into Prinplup before the battle if possible for increased stats.
- Turtwig (Grass-type): Turtwig is also a strong choice. Its Grass-type moves (Absorb, Razor Leaf) will deal super effective damage. Evolve it into Grotle for better stats.
- Chimchar (Fire-type): This is the most challenging starter for Roark, as Fire-type moves are not very effective against Rock-types. You'll need to rely on other Pokémon.
Alternative Pokémon to Catch:
- Budew / Roselia (Grass/Poison): Found on Route 204 (west of Jubilife City). Evolve Budew into Roselia by leveling it up with high friendship during the day. Roselia's Grass-type moves are excellent.
- Psyduck (Water): Found on Route 203. Psyduck learns Water Gun early and can be a great asset.
- Machop (Fighting): As mentioned, if you return to Oreburgh Gate after getting Rock Smash and can use it, Machop is a fantastic choice. Its Fighting-type moves will decimate Roark's team.
- Geodude (Rock/Ground): While not super effective, a Geodude of your own can be surprisingly useful. Its high Defense allows it to tank hits, and it can learn moves like Magnitude (via TM later) which are super effective against Rock-types (due to its Ground typing).
Battle Tips:
- Level Up: Ensure your main attackers are at least Level 14-16. Roark's Cranidos hits hard.
- Status Conditions: Consider using status moves like Growl (lowers Attack) or Sand-Attack (lowers Accuracy) to make the battle easier.
- Potions: Don't be afraid to use Potions to keep your Pokémon healthy, especially against Cranidos's Headbutt.
- Focus on Weaknesses: Prioritize using Water, Grass, or Fighting moves. If you have a Chimchar, try to use its Normal-type moves or rely on your other team members.
Reward: The Coal Badge & TM76
Upon defeating Roark, you will earn the Coal Badge! This badge signifies your first victory and comes with several benefits:
- All Pokémon up to Level 20 will obey you, regardless of whether you caught them or received them in a trade.
- You will now be able to use HM06 (Rock Smash) outside of battle, allowing you to clear those pesky rocks in Oreburgh Gate and other areas.
- You will also receive TM76 (Stealth Rock), a useful Rock-type entry hazard move.
Congratulations, Trainer! You've conquered your first Gym and are now ready to continue your adventure through the Sinnoh region, with new paths and opportunities unlocked.
