Evolution Methods

Pokémon evolution is a core mechanic in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, transforming your beloved companions into stronger, more formidable versions of themselves. Understanding the various evolution methods is crucial for building a powerful team and completing your Pokédex. This section details all the ways your Pokémon can evolve in the Hoenn region.

Level-Up Evolution

The most common evolution method involves simply raising your Pokémon's experience points until it reaches a specific level. Once a Pokémon hits its required level, it will attempt to evolve after gaining experience in battle. You can choose to allow or cancel the evolution by pressing 'B' during the evolution animation, though canceling is generally not recommended unless you have a specific strategy in mind (e.g., learning a move earlier).

  • Actionable Steps:
    1. Engage in battles against wild Pokémon or trainers.
    2. Use the Exp. Share (obtained from Mr. Stone in Rustboro City after delivering the Letter to Steven) to distribute experience to Pokémon not actively battling.
    3. use Rare Candies (found throughout Hoenn, such as in Granite Cave or Route 110, or purchased at the Battle Frontier) to instantly increase a Pokémon's level.
  • Examples:
    • Treecko evolves into Grovyle at Level 16.
    • Torchic evolves into Combusken at Level 16.
    • Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp at Level 16.
    • Poochyena evolves into Mightyena at Level 18.
    • Ralts evolves into Kirlia at Level 20.

Stone Evolution

Certain Pokémon require the use of a specific Evolution Stone to trigger their transformation. These stones are single-use items, so choose wisely! Once you have the correct stone, simply open your Bag, select the stone, and then select the Pokémon you wish to evolve.

  • Actionable Steps:
    1. Obtain the correct Evolution Stone:
      • Fire Stone: Found in Fiery Path. Can also be obtained from the Treasure Hunter in Route 124 (requires Dive).
      • Water Stone: Found on Route 124 (requires Dive). Can also be obtained from the Treasure Hunter in Route 124.
      • Thunder Stone: Found in New Mauville. Can also be obtained from the Treasure Hunter in Route 124.
      • Leaf Stone: Found in Route 124 (requires Dive). Can also be obtained from the Treasure Hunter in Route 124.
      • Moon Stone: Found in Meteor Falls.
      • Sun Stone: Held by wild Solrock (Ruby) or Lunatone (Sapphire) with a 5% chance.
    2. Open your Bag from the X menu.
    3. Navigate to the 'Items' pocket.
    4. Select the desired Evolution Stone.
    5. Choose the compatible Pokémon from your party to use the stone on.
  • Examples:
    • Pikachu evolves into Raichu with a Thunder Stone.
    • Eevee evolves into Flareon with a Fire Stone, Vaporeon with a Water Stone, or Jolteon with a Thunder Stone.
    • Gloom evolves into Vileplume with a Leaf Stone.
    • Nuzleaf evolves into Shiftry with a Leaf Stone.
    • Skitty evolves into Delcatty with a Moon Stone.

Trade Evolution

Some Pokémon will only evolve when traded between two separate Game Boy Advance systems. This requires a Link Cable and another player with a compatible game (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen). The Pokémon will evolve immediately upon completion of the trade.

  • Actionable Steps:
    1. Locate a friend with a Game Boy Advance and a compatible Pokémon game.
    2. Ensure both players have a Link Cable.
    3. Go to a Pokémon Center and speak to the attendant on the second floor to access the Union Room.
    4. Initiate a trade with your friend.
    5. Trade the Pokémon that evolves via trade. It will evolve on the receiving player's game.
  • Important Note: Some trade evolutions require the Pokémon to be holding a specific item. Ensure the Pokémon is holding the correct item before initiating the trade.
  • Examples:
    • Kadabra evolves into Alakazam when traded.
    • Machoke evolves into Machamp when traded.
    • Graveler evolves into Golem when traded.
    • Haunter evolves into Gengar when traded.
    • Seadra evolves into Kingdra when traded while holding a Dragon Scale. (Dragon Scales can be found on wild Horsea/Seadra or in the Underwater area of Route 124/126).
    • Porygon evolves into Porygon2 when traded while holding an Up-Grade. (Up-Grade is not available in Ruby/Sapphire but can be traded from FireRed/LeafGreen).

Friendship Evolution

A select few Pokémon evolve when they have a high level of friendship (also known as happiness) with their trainer and then gain a level. Friendship is an invisible stat that increases through various actions.

  • Actionable Steps:
    1. Increase your Pokémon's friendship:
      • Walk around with the Pokémon in your party.
      • Give the Pokémon vitamins (HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Carbos).
      • Give the Pokémon rare berries (Pomeg, Kelpsy, Qualot, Hondew, Grepa, Tamato Berries) that lower specific stats but significantly increase happiness.
      • Avoid letting the Pokémon faint in battle.
      • Avoid using bitter-tasting healing items on it (e.g., Energy Powder, Heal Powder).
      • Have the Pokémon participate in battles and win.
    2. Check Friendship: While there's no direct numerical display, a woman in Verdanturf Town (in the house to the right of the Pokémon Center) can give you an indication of your Pokémon's friendship level.
      • "It's very friendly with you. It must be happy." (Highest friendship)
      • "It likes you quite a lot." (High friendship)
      • "It's a little friendly to you." (Moderate friendship)
      • "It's not very used to you yet." (Low friendship)
    3. Once friendship is high, gain a level with the Pokémon through battle or a Rare Candy.
  • Examples:
    • Golbat evolves into Crobat when it levels up with high friendship.
    • Chansey evolves into Blissey when it levels up with high friendship.
    • Pichu evolves into Pikachu when it levels up with high friendship.
    • Cleffa evolves into Clefairy when it levels up with high friendship.
    • Igglybuff evolves into Jigglypuff when it levels up with high friendship.

Time-Based Evolution

Some Pokémon evolve based on the time of day, in addition to meeting other criteria like level or friendship. Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire use an internal clock, so this method is fully functional.

  • Actionable Steps:
    1. Ensure your Game Boy Advance's internal clock is set correctly (this is usually done when starting a new game, but can be adjusted via the title screen if the battery runs dry).
    2. Meet the primary evolution condition (e.g., level up with high friendship).
    3. For Espeon, level up Eevee with high friendship during the daytime (between 12:00 PM and 11:59 PM).
    4. For Umbreon, level up Eevee with high friendship during the nighttime (between 12:00 AM and 11:59 AM).
  • Examples:
    • Eevee evolves into Espeon (daytime, high friendship).
    • Eevee evolves into Umbreon (nighttime, high friendship).
