Berry Growing & Blending
Beyond their use as healing items, Berries in the Hoenn region offer a deep and rewarding system for enhancing your Pokémon's Contest stats through Berry Blending. Mastering this mechanic can give you a significant edge in the Pokémon Contests found across Hoenn.
I. Berry Growing: From Seed to Harvest
To begin your journey into Berry cultivation, you'll need two essential items: the Berry Pouch and the Wailmer Pail. The Berry Pouch is given to you early in the game by a girl in the flower shop in Rustboro City. The Wailmer Pail is also obtained in Rustboro City from a girl near the Pokémon Center after you deliver the Letter to Steven.
Steps to Grow Berries:
- Planting: Locate a soft soil patch. These are distinguishable by their darker, tilled appearance. You'll find them in various routes, such as Route 103, Route 104, Route 111, and many others. Approach a patch and open your Bag. Select the Berry Pouch, choose the Berry you wish to plant, and select "Plant."
- Watering: After planting, the Berry plant will be dry. Use your Wailmer Pail on the planted Berry to water it. This is crucial for healthy growth. You'll need to re-water your plants periodically as they grow. If a plant goes too long without water, it will dry out and produce fewer Berries.
- Growth Stages: Berries go through several growth stages. The time it takes for a Berry to mature varies depending on the type of Berry. For example, a Oran Berry takes 12 hours to grow, while a Sitrus Berry takes 24 hours. You can check the growth stage by interacting with the plant.
- Harvesting: Once the Berry plant is fully grown, it will sparkle. Interact with it to harvest your Berries. You'll receive multiple Berries from a single plant, with the quantity increasing if you consistently watered it.
Key Locations for Berry Patches:
- Route 103: Several patches available early on.
- Route 104: Abundant patches, especially near the Pretty Petal flower shop.
- Route 111: Desert area has some unique Berry patches.
- Route 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119, 120, 121, 123: All these routes contain multiple Berry growing spots.
- Sootopolis City: A few hidden patches.
- Lilycove City: Near the Contest Hall.
- Fortree City: Several patches around the treehouses.
Tips for Efficient Berry Growing:
- Check your Clock: Ruby and Sapphire utilize an internal clock, meaning Berries grow even when your Game Boy Advance is off. Keep track of real-world time to optimize your watering schedule.
- Variety is Key: Plant different types of Berries to ensure you have a diverse stock for Berry Blending.
- Mulch: While not explicitly in Ruby/Sapphire, later games introduced Mulch to affect Berry growth. In these versions, consistent watering is your primary method for maximizing yield.
II. Berry Blending: Crafting Pokéblocks
Berry Blending is the process of combining Berries to create Pokéblocks, which are essential for increasing your Pokémon's Contest stats (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, Tough). You can blend Berries at the Berry Blender found in the Contest Halls located in Slateport City, Verdanturf Town, Fallarbor Town, and Lilycove City.
The Berry Blending Process:
- Approach the Blender: Talk to the NPC standing next to the Berry Blender in any Contest Hall.
- Select Participants: You can blend Berries by yourself or with up to three other NPCs (or linked players). Blending with more participants generally results in higher quality Pokéblocks.
- Choose Berries: Each participant selects one Berry to contribute. The type and quality of Berries chosen directly impact the resulting Pokéblock.
- The Blending Minigame: A spinning arrow will appear on the Berry Blender. Your goal is to press the 'A' button when the arrow points directly at your designated marker. The better your timing, the higher the "speed" and "smoothness" of the blend, leading to a better Pokéblock.
- Receive Pokéblock: After the blending minigame, you'll receive a Pokéblock. Its color and level will indicate its primary Contest stat boost and potency.
Understanding Pokéblocks:
- Colors and Stats:
- Red Pokéblocks: Boost Coolness. Made from spicy Berries (e.g., Cheri, Leppa, Pomeg).
- Blue Pokéblocks: Boost Beauty. Made from dry Berries (e.g., Chesto, Oran, Kelpsy).
- Pink Pokéblocks: Boost Cuteness. Made from sweet Berries (e.g., Pecha, Persim, Hondew).
- Green Pokéblocks: Boost Smartness. Made from bitter Berries (e.g., Rawst, Lum, Grepa).
- Yellow Pokéblocks: Boost Toughness. Made from sour Berries (e.g., Aspear, Sitrus, Tamato).
- Purple/Brown Pokéblocks: Mixed flavors, offering boosts to multiple stats but often less potent than single-flavor Pokéblocks.
- Level and Smoothness:
- Level: Indicates the potency of the Pokéblock. Higher level Pokéblocks provide greater stat boosts. This is influenced by the quality of Berries used and the blending speed.
- Smoothness: Represents how "smooth" the Pokéblock is. A lower smoothness value means your Pokémon can eat more Pokéblocks before becoming full. Each Pokémon has a "Sheen" stat; once it's maxed out, they cannot eat any more Pokéblocks. Aim for low smoothness, high-level Pokéblocks for optimal results.
Optimal Blending Strategies:
- Match Flavors: To create a strong single-flavor Pokéblock, all participants should contribute Berries of the same dominant flavor. For example, all spicy Berries for a Red Pokéblock.
- Rare Berries for High Levels: Use rarer Berries (e.g., Liechi, Ganlon, Salac, Petaya, Apicot) for significantly higher level Pokéblocks. These are often found in hidden locations or as gifts from NPCs.
- Practice the Minigame: The blending minigame requires good timing. Practice with common Berries to get a feel for it before using your valuable rare Berries.
- NPC Blending Partners: The NPCs in the Contest Halls have varying blending skills. Experiment to find the ones who consistently achieve high speeds and low smoothness.
By diligently growing Berries and strategically blending them into Pokéblocks, you can transform your Pokémon into Contest superstars, ready to dazzle the judges and earn you those coveted ribbons!
