After receiving your Pokédex, head north from Littleroot Town through Route 101 and then east onto Route 103. Here, you'll encounter your rival, May/Brendan, who will challenge you to your first Pokémon battle! Your rival will have the starter Pokémon that has a type advantage over yours. For example, if you chose Treecko, they will have Torchic. If you chose Torchic, they will have Mudkip. If you chose Mudkip, they will have Treecko. Their Pokémon will be at Level 5. Use your starter's STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) moves like Pound or Scratch. Don't be afraid to use a Potion if your HP gets low. Winning this battle will give you valuable experience and a taste of what's to come. After the battle, return to Professor Birch's lab in Littleroot Town.
