Status Conditions

Status conditions are debilitating effects that can be inflicted upon your Pokémon during battle, significantly impacting their performance. Understanding how to inflict, cure, and prevent these conditions is crucial for any aspiring Pokémon Trainer in the Hoenn region.

Major Status Conditions

These conditions persist after battle unless cured, and have significant effects. Only one major status condition can affect a Pokémon at a time.

Poison (PSN)

  • Effect: Your Pokémon loses HP at the end of each turn in battle. Outside of battle, your Pokémon loses 1 HP every four steps you take on the map.
  • Infliction: Moves like Poison Sting, PoisonPowder, and Sludge Bomb.
  • Cure:
    • Antidote: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 100 Pokedollars.
    • Full Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 600 Pokedollars.
    • Full Restore: Purchase from the Lilycove Department Store (5F) for 3000 Pokedollars (late-game).
    • Pecha Berry: Found on various berry trees (e.g., Route 103, Route 104) or as a prize from the Trick House.
    • Pokémon Center: The Nurse Joy at any Pokémon Center will heal your entire party for free.
  • Strategy: Be wary of Grass and Bug-type Pokémon, as they often carry Poison-type moves. Keep a stock of Antidotes, especially when exploring caves or routes with many wild Pokémon.

Paralysis (PAR)

  • Effect: Your Pokémon's Speed stat is halved, and it has a 25% chance of being unable to move each turn.
  • Infliction: Moves like Thunder Wave, Stun Spore, and Thunderbolt (with a chance).
  • Cure:
    • Paralyze Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 200 Pokedollars.
    • Full Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 600 Pokedollars.
    • Full Restore: Purchase from the Lilycove Department Store (5F) for 3000 Pokedollars.
    • Cheri Berry: Found on various berry trees (e.g., Route 103, Route 104).
    • Pokémon Center: Free healing for your entire party.
  • Strategy: Electric-type Pokémon are immune to Paralysis. Consider carrying a Cheri Berry on your fastest Pokémon to ensure they can act first.

Burn (BRN)

  • Effect: Your Pokémon loses HP at the end of each turn in battle, and its Attack stat is halved.
  • Infliction: Moves like Will-O-Wisp, Flamethrower, and Ember (with a chance).
  • Cure:
    • Burn Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 250 Pokedollars.
    • Full Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 600 Pokedollars.
    • Full Restore: Purchase from the Lilycove Department Store (5F) for 3000 Pokedollars.
    • Rawst Berry: Found on various berry trees (e.g., Route 112).
    • Pokémon Center: Free healing for your entire party.
  • Strategy: Fire-type Pokémon are immune to Burn. If your main physical attacker gets burned, switch them out or use a Burn Heal immediately to restore their Attack power.

Sleep (SLP)

  • Effect: Your Pokémon is unable to move for 1-3 turns.
  • Infliction: Moves like Spore, Sleep Powder, and Hypnosis.
  • Cure:
    • Awakening: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 250 Pokedollars.
    • Full Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 600 Pokedollars.
    • Full Restore: Purchase from the Lilycove Department Store (5F) for 3000 Pokedollars.
    • Chesto Berry: Found on various berry trees (e.g., Route 104).
    • Pokémon Center: Free healing for your entire party.
  • Strategy: Sleep can be incredibly disruptive. Equipping a Chesto Berry on a key Pokémon can allow them to wake up instantly and turn the tide of battle.

Freeze (FRZ)

  • Effect: Your Pokémon is unable to move until it thaws (which can happen randomly each turn, or by being hit by a Fire-type move). This is the rarest status condition.
  • Infliction: Moves like Ice Beam and Blizzard (with a small chance).
  • Cure:
    • Ice Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 250 Pokedollars.
    • Full Heal: Purchase from any Poké Mart for 600 Pokedollars.
    • Full Restore: Purchase from the Lilycove Department Store (5F) for 3000 Pokedollars.
    • Aspear Berry: Found on various berry trees (e.g., Route 114).
    • Pokémon Center: Free healing for your entire party.
  • Strategy: Ice-type Pokémon are immune to Freeze. While rare, a frozen Pokémon is completely helpless. Keep Ice Heals or Aspear Berries on hand for emergencies.

Minor Status Conditions (Temporary)

These conditions typically wear off after a few turns or when the Pokémon is switched out. They do not persist after battle.

  • Confusion: Your Pokémon has a 50% chance to hit itself instead of attacking. Cures by switching out or after 1-4 turns. Use a Persim Berry to cure instantly.
  • Infatuation: If the opposing Pokémon is of the opposite gender, your Pokémon has a 50% chance of being unable to move. Cures by switching out or when the infatuating Pokémon is defeated. Use a Lumiose Galette (not available in Ruby/Sapphire) or switch out.
  • Flinching: Your Pokémon is unable to move for the current turn. Caused by moves like Bite or Headbutt. There is no item to cure flinching; it's a one-turn effect.
  • Trapping: Your Pokémon is prevented from switching out. Caused by moves like Wrap, Fire Spin, or abilities like Arena Trap. Cures when the trapping move ends or the trapping Pokémon is switched out/defeated.

Key Items and Locations for Status Cures

Always keep a healthy supply of these items to ensure your team is ready for any challenge:

  • Poké Marts: Found in every major town (Oldale Town, Rustboro City, Slateport City, Mauville City, etc.). They stock Antidotes, Paralyze Heals, Burn Heals, Ice Heals, and Awakenings.
  • Lilycove Department Store: The largest selection of healing items, including Full Heals and Full Restores, can be found on the 5th floor.
  • Berry Trees: Regularly check berry trees across the region for Pecha, Cheri, Rawst, Chesto, and Aspear Berries. They grow back over time!
  • Trick House: Located on Route 110, completing its puzzles can sometimes reward you with useful berries.
