The Hoenn region is home to a magnificent array of Legendary Pokémon, each with unique abilities and lore. Catching them is a significant achievement for any trainer. This guide will help you locate and capture these powerful creatures.
Groudon (Ruby Exclusive)
Location: Terra Cave. This cave only appears after you have captured Kyogre in the post-game. You'll need to use Surf to reach the entrance, which is typically located in the eastern part of the ocean. The cave itself is a challenging dungeon with strong trainers.
Catching Strategy: Groudon is a Ground-type Pokémon, making it immune to Electric-type attacks. It's weak to Water and Grass-type moves. Bring Pokémon with high Defense and Special Defense to withstand its powerful attacks. Use status conditions like Sleep or Paralysis to make catching easier.
Kyogre (Sapphire Exclusive)
Location: Marine Cave. This cave becomes accessible after capturing Groudon in the post-game. Similar to Terra Cave, you'll need Surf to reach its entrance, usually found in the western ocean. The Marine Cave is known for its challenging underwater navigation.
Catching Strategy: Kyogre is a Water-type Pokémon, weak to Grass and Electric-type moves. It has high Special Attack, so be prepared for powerful Water-type assaults. Status conditions are highly recommended. Pokémon with high Special Defense will be beneficial.
Rayquaza
Location: Sky Pillar. This towering structure is located in the eastern part of Hoenn. You'll need to use Fly to reach the general area and then navigate through the challenging, multi-level dungeon. The Sky Pillar is filled with trainers and requires careful platforming.
Catching Strategy: Rayquaza is a Dragon/Flying-type Pokémon, weak to Ice, Rock, and Dragon-type moves. It has extremely high Attack and Special Attack. Bringing Pokémon that can resist its attacks and inflict status conditions is crucial. Be prepared for a long battle.
Regirock, Regice, and Registeel
Location: These three Legendary Titans are found in separate temples scattered across Hoenn. You'll need to decipher clues and use specific Pokémon in your party to unlock their chambers.
- Regirock: Found in the Rock Peak Ruins in the desert area of Route 111. Requires a Pokémon that knows Rock Smash and a specific sequence of actions.
- Regice: Found in the Ice Cave on Route 105. Requires a Pokémon that knows Strength and a specific sequence of actions.
- Registeel: Found in the Ancient Tomb on Route 120. Requires a Pokémon that knows Flash and a specific sequence of actions.
Catching Strategy: All three Regi Pokémon are Rock or Steel types and have very high Defense. They are slow but hit hard. Focus on using status conditions and chipping away at their HP. Pokémon with strong offensive typing against them (e.g., Water for Regirock, Fire for Registeel) are recommended.
Latios and Latias
Location: These Eon Pokémon roam the Hoenn region after you encounter one of them in a post-game event (often involving Professor Birch). You can track their current location using the PokéNav's "Encounter" feature. They will randomly appear on different routes.
Catching Strategy: Latios and Latias are Dragon/Psychic-type Pokémon, weak to Ice, Bug, Dragon, Ghost, and Dark-type moves. They are fast and have high Special Attack. Use moves that can inflict status conditions and have high accuracy. Be prepared to chase them across multiple routes.
