Petalburg Woods is a small forest located west of Petalburg City. As you traverse the woods, you'll encounter a scientist being harassed by a member of Team Aqua (Ruby) or Team Magma (Sapphire). This is your first encounter with the game's antagonist team. You'll be forced into a battle against a single Poochyena or Zubat, typically around Level 9. This battle is straightforward; use your strongest attacks. After defeating the grunt, the scientist will thank you and give you a Great Ball. Petalburg Woods also contains several wild Pokémon like Shroomish and Slakoth, which can be valuable additions to your team. explore thoroughly to find hidden items and battle all trainers before exiting to Route 104.
