Elite Four Sidney (Dark-type)
Welcome, aspiring Champion! Your journey through the Hoenn region has led you to the ultimate challenge: the Elite Four. The first formidable opponent standing in your way is Sidney, a master of Dark-type Pokémon. Sidney's team is designed to hit hard and exploit various weaknesses, but with the right strategy and Pokémon, you'll emerge victorious.
Dark-type Pokémon, introduced in Generation II, are known for their offensive prowess and tricky abilities. In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Dark-types have two primary weaknesses: Fighting and Bug. There are no Fairy-type Pokémon or moves in Generation III, so focus your efforts on these two types.
Sidney's Team Overview
Sidney commands a diverse team of five Dark-type Pokémon. Understanding each member's strengths, weaknesses, and potential moves is crucial for planning your assault.
| Pokémon | Level | Type(s) | Key Moves (Potential) | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mightyena | Lv. 46 | Dark | Bite, Crunch, Sand Attack, Swagger | Fighting, Bug |
| Shiftry | Lv. 46 | Grass/Dark | Faint Attack, Giga Drain, Double Team, Sunny Day | Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, Bug, Fighting |
| Cacturne | Lv. 46 | Grass/Dark | Faint Attack, Needle Arm, Leech Seed, Cotton Spore | Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, Bug, Fighting |
| Crawdaunt | Lv. 48 | Water/Dark | Crabhammer, Crunch, Swords Dance, Taunt | Grass, Electric, Fighting, Bug |
| Absol | Lv. 49 | Dark | Swords Dance, Slash, Aerial Ace, Rock Slide | Fighting, Bug |
Strategic Approach and Recommended Pokémon
Your primary goal against Sidney should be to exploit the Dark-type weaknesses. A strong Fighting-type Pokémon is arguably your most valuable asset, as it can deal super-effective damage to all of Sidney's team members. Bug-type moves are also highly effective.
Recommended Pokémon & Moves:
-
Hariyama (Fighting): An absolute powerhouse against Sidney.
- Obtainable: Evolve Makuhita (Lv. 24). Makuhita can be found in Granite Cave.
- Key Moves:
- Brick Break (TM31): A reliable Fighting-type attack. TM31 is found in Sootopolis City.
- Arm Thrust: Learned by Makuhita at Lv. 19, a multi-hit Fighting move.
- Vital Throw: Learned by Hariyama at Lv. 33, always goes last but never misses.
-
Breloom (Grass/Fighting): Another excellent choice, offering both Fighting and Grass STAB.
- Obtainable: Evolve Shroomish (Lv. 23). Shroomish can be found in Petalburg Woods.
- Key Moves:
- Sky Uppercut: Learned by Breloom at Lv. 23, a strong Fighting-type move.
- Mach Punch: Learned by Breloom at Lv. 27, a priority Fighting move.
- Giga Drain (TM19): A Grass-type move that also restores HP. TM19 is found in the Petalburg Woods.
-
Heracross (Bug/Fighting): If you managed to trade one in from another game (not natively available in Ruby/Sapphire without trading), Heracross is a fantastic option.
- Key Moves:
- Megahorn: A powerful Bug-type attack.
- Brick Break (TM31): As above.
- Key Moves:
-
Swampert (Water/Ground): While not a Fighting or Bug-type, Swampert's Ground typing gives it an advantage against Mightyena and Absol if they use Rock Slide. Its high stats make it a reliable choice.
- Key Moves:
- Surf (HM03): Strong Water-type STAB.
- Earthquake (TM26): Powerful Ground-type STAB. TM26 is found in the Seafloor Cavern.
- Key Moves:
-
Manectric (Electric): Useful for Crawdaunt.
- Obtainable: Evolve Electrike (Lv. 26). Electrike can be found on Routes 110, 118, 119.
- Key Moves:
- Thunderbolt (TM24): A powerful Electric-type special attack. TM24 is found in the Mauville City Game Corner.
-
Torkoal (Fire): Excellent for Shiftry and Cacturne.
- Obtainable: Found on Mt. Chimney.
- Key Moves:
- Flamethrower (TM35): A strong Fire-type special attack. TM35 is found in the Fiery Path.
General Battle Strategy:
- Lead with a Strong Fighting-type: Start with your most powerful Fighting-type Pokémon to try and one-shot Sidney's Mightyena.
- Beware of Absol: Sidney's ace, Absol, is fast and hits incredibly hard, especially after a Swords Dance. Prioritize taking it down quickly with a strong Fighting-type move. It also knows Aerial Ace, which never misses, and Rock Slide, which can be problematic for Flying or Fire types.
- Handle Shiftry and Cacturne: These Grass/Dark types are quadruple weak to Bug-type moves, and also weak to Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, and Fighting. A single strong Fire or Flying attack can often dispatch them. Watch out for Shiftry's Double Team and Sunny Day, which can boost its Giga Drain. Cacturne's Leech Seed can be annoying.
- Address Crawdaunt: This Water/Dark type is weak to Grass, Electric, Fighting, and Bug. A strong Electric or Grass-type attack will make short work of it. Be wary of its Swords Dance, which can boost its Crabhammer and Crunch to devastating levels.
- Item Management: Remember, you cannot heal at a Pokémon Center between Elite Four battles. Stock up on Hyper Potions, Full Restores, Revives, and Full Heals (or Lava Cookies/other status healers) before entering the Pokémon League. Use your items strategically to keep your key Pokémon healthy.
- Status Conditions: Sidney's Pokémon can inflict status conditions like Sand Attack (Mightyena) or Leech Seed (Cacturne). Be prepared with Full Heals or Pokémon that can absorb these effects.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid:
- Underleveled Team: Attempting the Elite Four with Pokémon significantly below Lv. 50 will make the battles much harder. Aim for at least Lv. 50 for your main team members.
- Lack of Type Coverage: Relying solely on one type of attack, even if it's super-effective, can be risky. Ensure your team has several move types to handle unexpected situations or if your primary attacker faints.
- Forgetting to Stock Up: This is a marathon, not a sprint. The Elite Four and Champion battles are continuous. Failing to bring enough healing items will often lead to defeat.
- Ignoring Stat Boosts/Drops: Sidney's Pokémon can use moves like Swords Dance (Absol, Crawdaunt) to boost their Attack, or Sand Attack (Mightyena) and Cotton Spore (Cacturne) to hinder yours. Counter these with your own stat-boosting moves or by switching out.
With careful planning and a well-trained team, Sidney's Dark-type Pokémon will fall before your might. Good luck, Trainer!
