Pokémon Locations & Catching
Welcome, aspiring Pokémon Trainer, to the comprehensive guide for discovering and capturing every creature in the Hoenn region! This section will walk you through each area, detailing which Pokémon you can encounter, how to find them, and essential strategies for adding them to your team. Remember, patience and preparation are key to becoming a Pokémon Master!
General Catching Strategies
- Weaken First: Always reduce a wild Pokémon's HP to yellow or, ideally, red before attempting to catch it. This significantly increases your chances.
- Status Conditions: Inflicting status conditions like Sleep or Paralysis dramatically boosts your catch rate. Avoid Poison or Burn, as these can knock out the Pokémon before you can catch it.
- Poké Ball Variety: Don't rely solely on standard Poké Balls. Great Balls and Ultra Balls offer higher catch rates for tougher Pokémon. Consider Net Balls for Water and Bug types, and Dive Balls for Pokémon encountered underwater.
- Save Before Encounter: For rare or one-time encounters (like Legendary Pokémon), save your game beforehand. If the catch fails or you accidentally knock out the Pokémon, you can reset and try again.
- False Swipe: A Pokémon with the move "False Swipe" is invaluable. This move always leaves the target with at least 1 HP, preventing accidental KOs. Scyther and Farfetch'd are common users of this move in other games, but you'll need to breed or trade for a Pokémon with it in Ruby/Sapphire if you want it early.
Littleroot Town & Route 101
Your journey begins in the quaint Littleroot Town and the adjacent Route 101. These areas are your first steps into the wild Hoenn region.
Littleroot Town
This is where you receive your very first Pokémon from Professor Birch!
- Starter Pokémon:
- Treecko: The Grass-type starter.
- Torchic: The Fire-type starter.
- Mudkip: The Water-type starter.
Route 101
The tall grass here holds your first wild encounters. These Pokémon are generally low-leveled, making them easy to catch with standard Poké Balls.
- Poochyena: A common Dark-type Pokémon. You'll encounter "Some" of these in the grass. They can be a good early addition to your team for their Intimidate ability.
- Wurmple: A very common Bug-type Pokémon. You'll find "Many" of these. Wurmple evolves into either Silcoon or Cascoon depending on its personality value, which then evolve into Beautifly or Dustox, respectively. Catch a few to try and get both evolutions!
- Zigzagoon: Another very common Normal-type Pokémon. "Many" can be found. Zigzagoon's Pickup ability is incredibly useful, as it can randomly find items after battles, including valuable Potions and even rare items later in the game.
Route 103
Located north of Oldale Town, Route 103 offers a slightly different set of Pokémon. You'll initially access only the western portion of this route.
Grass Encounters
- Poochyena: Still present in "Some" numbers, similar to Route 101.
Water Encounters (Requires Fishing Rod or Surf)
To access the water Pokémon here, you'll need either a Fishing Rod or the HM03 Surf. The Old Rod can be obtained from a Fisherman in Dewford Town, and the Good Rod from a Fisherman on Route 118.
- Magikarp: "Many" can be found with both the Old Rod and the Good Rod. While seemingly useless at first, Magikarp evolves into the powerful Gyarados at level 20, making it a worthwhile investment.
- Pelipper: Encountered by "Surfing" on the water. Pelipper is a Water/Flying type, offering good coverage and access to the HM02 Fly later on. You'll find "Few" of them, so be persistent.
- Sharpedo: This aggressive Water/Dark type can also be found by "Surfing." Sharpedo is a fast special attacker. Note that Sharpedo is more common in Sapphire Version.
