PokéNav Functions
The PokéNav is an indispensable tool for any Trainer exploring the Hoenn region. You'll receive this handy device from your rival, May or Brendan, after your first battle with them in Oldale Town. It offers several crucial functions that will aid you throughout your journey. Mastering its features will make your adventure smoother and more efficient.
Accessing the PokéNav
To open your PokéNav, simply press the R button at any time outside of battle or menus. This quick access allows you to check information on the fly without navigating through the main menu.
PokéNav Sections
The PokéNav is divided into four main sections, each serving a distinct purpose:
- Hoenn Map: This is your primary navigation tool.
- Condition: Track your Pokémon's Contest stats.
- Trainer's Eyes: Keep tabs on important NPCs for rematches.
- Ribbons: View the Ribbons your Pokémon have earned.
Hoenn Map
The Hoenn Map provides a detailed overview of the entire region. It's incredibly useful for planning your routes and remembering where you've been.
- Current Location: Your current position is clearly marked with a blinking sprite.
- Towns & Cities: All major settlements are labeled, allowing you to quickly identify your destination.
- Routes: Numbered routes connect different locations, helping you understand the region's layout.
- HM Locations: As you progress, the map will indicate areas where specific HMs (like Surf or Fly) can be used, which is vital for backtracking and exploring new areas.
- Zoom Function: While not explicitly a "zoom" button, pressing the A button on a specific location will often provide a brief description of that area, including notable features or events.
- Strategy Tip: Frequently consult the Hoenn Map to visualize your journey. Before heading into a new route, check the map to see if there are any branching paths or hidden areas you might want to explore later with new HMs.
Condition
This section is crucial for aspiring Pokémon Coordinators. It displays the five Contest conditions for each of your Pokémon:
- Cool: Boosted by Spicy Poffins/Pokéblocks.
- Beauty: Enhanced by Dry Poffins/Pokéblocks.
- Cute: Increased by Sweet Poffins/Pokéblocks.
- Smart: Improved by Bitter Poffins/Pokéblocks.
- Tough: Strengthened by Sour Poffins/Pokéblocks.
Each condition is represented by a bar that fills up as you feed your Pokémon Pokéblocks. The higher the condition, the better your Pokémon will perform in that specific Contest category.
- Strategy Tip: Focus on one or two conditions per Pokémon if you plan to enter Contests. For example, a Pokémon with high Coolness will excel in Cool Contests. You can create Pokéblocks at the Berry Blender found in Slateport City, Lilycove City, Verdanturf Town, and Fallarbor Town. Remember to use berries that correspond to the desired flavor (e.g., Spicy Berries for Coolness).
Trainer's Eyes
Trainer's Eyes is arguably one of the most useful features of the PokéNav, especially for experience grinding and item acquisition. It keeps a record of Trainers you've battled and provides information about them.
- Trainer Registration: After battling certain Trainers, their information will be added to your Trainer's Eyes.
- Rematch Indicator: A small exclamation mark next to a Trainer's name indicates they are ready for a rematch! This is an excellent way to gain experience and money.
- Trainer Information: Selecting a Trainer will show you their name, location, and sometimes a brief quote about their battling style or Pokémon preferences. This can give you hints about what Pokémon they might use in a rematch.
- Strategy Tip: Regularly check Trainer's Eyes, especially after progressing through a new area or after a significant in-game event (like defeating a Gym Leader). Many Trainers will be ready for a rematch, offering valuable experience points and Pokedollars. Some Trainers even offer rare items upon defeat in a rematch, so it's always worth checking!
Ribbons
This section displays all the Ribbons your Pokémon have earned. Ribbons are special accolades awarded for various achievements, such as winning Contests or defeating the Elite Four.
- Contest Ribbons: Awarded for winning each of the four Contest ranks (Normal, Super, Hyper, Master) in each of the five categories (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, Tough).
- Victory Ribbon: Awarded to Pokémon that defeat the Champion of the Pokémon League.
- Strategy Tip: While Ribbons don't directly impact battle performance, they are a testament to your Pokémon's accomplishments and a fun collection goal for completionists. Aim to get a full set of Contest Ribbons for your favorite Contest Pokémon!
