Trainer Rematches

Once you've conquered the Elite Four and become the Hoenn Champion, a new world of challenges opens up! Many trainers you've previously battled across the region are eager for a rematch, offering valuable experience points and opportunities to test your post-game team. These rematches are facilitated through the Trainer's Eyes function on your PokéNav. Engaging in these battles is an excellent way to level up your Pokémon, earn extra cash, and complete your Pokédex by evolving certain Pokémon.

How to Initiate a Rematch

To trigger a rematch, follow these steps:

  1. Acquire the PokéNav: If you haven't already, obtain the PokéNav from Mr. Stone in Rustboro City after delivering the Letter to Steven Stone in Granite Cave.
  2. Check the Trainer's Eyes: Open your PokéNav and navigate to the "Trainer's Eyes" section. This feature lists all trainers you've exchanged numbers with throughout your journey.
  3. Look for the "Ready" Indicator: Trainers who are ready for a rematch will have a red Poké Ball icon next to their name. If the icon is gray, they are not currently available for a rematch.
  4. Call the Trainer: Select a trainer with a red Poké Ball icon and choose the "Call" option. They will then indicate their location and readiness to battle.
  5. Travel to Their Location: Fly or walk to the trainer's specified location. They will be standing in their original spot where you first battled them.
  6. Engage in Battle: Approach the trainer, and they will challenge you to a rematch. Be prepared, as their Pokémon will be significantly stronger than in your initial encounter.

Important Note: Not all trainers you battle will register in your Trainer's Eyes. Only specific trainers, often those with unique dialogue or who are part of a small group, will exchange numbers with you. Keep an eye out for these opportunities during your initial playthrough.

Rematch Strategies and Benefits

Trainer rematches are more than just a quick battle; they offer several strategic advantages:

  • Experience Grinding: The Pokémon used by rematch trainers are typically at higher levels than those found in the wild, making them excellent sources of experience points for your team. This is crucial for training up new Pokémon or getting your current team to level 100.
  • Money Farming: Defeating trainers, especially those with higher-level Pokémon, yields a substantial amount of prize money. Equip an Amulet Coin or Luck Incense on one of your battling Pokémon to double your earnings. This money can be used to purchase valuable items like Hyper Potions, Full Restores, and Poké Balls.
  • EV Training: If you're delving into competitive battling, rematches can be a controlled way to gain specific Effort Values (EVs) for your Pokémon. Research which Pokémon give which EVs and target trainers who use them.
  • Item Acquisition: While less common, some trainers might occasionally give you items after a rematch, or their Pokémon might hold items that can be acquired with the move Thief or Covet.
  • Pokédex Completion: If you need to evolve a Pokémon that requires a certain level, repeated rematches can help you reach that level quickly.
