Weather Effects in Battle
The Hoenn region is known for its diverse climates, and these environmental factors play a significant role in Pokémon battles! Understanding and utilizing weather effects can turn the tide of a challenging fight. Weather conditions can be naturally occurring in certain areas, or they can be summoned by specific Pokémon abilities or moves. Here's a breakdown of the various weather effects you'll encounter and how to use them to your advantage.
Rain
Rain is a common weather condition that can appear naturally in areas like Route 120 or be initiated by the move Rain Dance (TM18, found in the Abandoned Ship) or the ability Drizzle (Kyogre's ability).
- Water-type moves: Gain a 50% power boost. This is excellent for Pokémon like Swampert or Ludicolo.
- Fire-type moves: Suffer a 50% power reduction. Avoid using Fire-type attackers during rain.
- Thunder: Becomes 100% accurate and can hit Pokémon during the first turn of Fly.
- Hurricane: Becomes 100% accurate.
- Solar Beam: Power is halved.
- Synthesis, Morning Sun, Moonlight: Recover only 25% of max HP instead of 50%.
- Swift Swim ability: Doubles the Pokémon's Speed. Consider Pokémon like Lombre or Seaking for a rainy team.
- Dry Skin ability: Heals the Pokémon for 1/8 of its max HP each turn.
- Forecast ability: Castform changes to its Water-type form.
Strategy Tip: If you're facing a powerful Fire-type opponent, using Rain Dance can significantly reduce their threat while boosting your Water-type counters. Conversely, if your team relies heavily on Fire-types, avoid battling in the rain or switch out to a Pokémon that can change the weather.
Harsh Sunlight
Harsh Sunlight can occur naturally in some desert areas or be summoned by the move Sunny Day (TM11, found in the Scorched Slab) or the ability Drought (Groudon's ability).
- Fire-type moves: Gain a 50% power boost. Great for Pokémon like Blaziken or Torkoal.
- Water-type moves: Suffer a 50% power reduction.
- Solar Beam: Requires no charge turn and can be fired immediately.
- Thunder, Hurricane: Accuracy drops to 50%.
- Synthesis, Morning Sun, Moonlight: Recover 100% of max HP.
- Chlorophyll ability: Doubles the Pokémon's Speed. Excellent for Grass-types like Sceptile or Vileplume.
- Flower Gift ability: (Cherrim's ability, not present in Ruby/Sapphire but good to know for future games) boosts Attack and Special Defense of itself and its allies.
- Forecast ability: Castform changes to its Fire-type form.
Strategy Tip: A team built around Sunny Day can be devastating, especially with Chlorophyll users. Using Sunny Day against a Water-type gym leader, like Juan (in Emerald, but similar logic applies to trainers with Water-types), can greatly diminish their effectiveness.
Sandstorm
Sandstorm is a persistent weather condition that can be found in areas like the Desert Underpass or initiated by the move Sandstorm (TM37, found in the Desert Underpass) or the ability Sand Stream (Tyranitar's ability, though Tyranitar is not native to Hoenn in R/S).
- Damage: All Pokémon not of the Rock, Ground, or Steel-type take 1/16 of their max HP in damage each turn. This can quickly wear down opponents.
- Rock-type Special Defense: Rock-type Pokémon gain a 50% boost to their Special Defense stat. This makes Pokémon like Aggron or Golem incredibly tanky.
- Synthesis, Morning Sun, Moonlight: Recover only 25% of max HP.
- Sand Veil ability: Increases the Pokémon's Evasion by 20%. This is great for Pokémon like Cacnea or Trapinch.
- Forecast ability: Castform changes to its Ice-type form.
Strategy Tip: Sandstorm is excellent for passive damage and boosting your Rock-type defenders. If you're facing a team without many Rock, Ground, or Steel-types, a well-placed Sandstorm can slowly chip away at their health, making them easier to defeat.
Hail
Hail is a weather condition that is not naturally occurring in Ruby and Sapphire and cannot be summoned by a specific ability in these versions. It can only be initiated by the move Hail (TM07, found on Route 105).
- Damage: All Pokémon not of the Ice-type take 1/16 of their max HP in damage each turn.
- Blizzard: Becomes 100% accurate.
- Synthesis, Morning Sun, Moonlight: Recover only 25% of max HP.
- Ice Body ability: (Not present in Ruby/Sapphire, but good to know for future games) Heals the Pokémon for 1/16 of its max HP each turn.
- Snow Cloak ability: (Not present in Ruby/Sapphire, but good to know for future games) Increases the Pokémon's Evasion by 20%.
- Forecast ability: Castform changes to its Ice-type form.
Strategy Tip: While less common due to the lack of an ability to summon it, Hail can still be useful for passive damage if you have an Ice-type Pokémon on your team that can benefit from it, or if you want to chip away at an opponent's health over time.
Clearing Weather
Weather effects typically last for 5 turns when initiated by a move like Rain Dance or Sunny Day. Abilities like Drizzle or Drought create permanent weather until another weather condition is set. You can clear existing weather by:
- Using a different weather-inducing move (e.g., using Sunny Day will clear Rain).
- Switching in a Pokémon with a weather-inducing ability (e.g., switching in Groudon will clear any existing weather and set up Harsh Sunlight).
- The battle ending.
Mastering weather effects is a key component of advanced battling in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. Pay attention to the environment and your opponent's team composition to gain a significant advantage!
