Item Locations & Uses
Mastering the use of your tools is crucial for capturing those perfect Pokémon photos and uncovering hidden secrets in Pokémon Snap. Professor Oak provides you with essential equipment throughout your journey, but knowing when and where to deploy each item can make all the difference. This section details each item's location, how to unlock it, and strategic uses to maximize your photo scores and interactions.
Pokémon Food (Apples)
- Location: Automatically available from the start of the game.
- Unlocking: No special unlock required; it's your default interaction tool.
- Uses:
- Attracting Pokémon: Throw an Apple near a Pokémon to draw its attention. Many Pokémon will approach to eat it, offering close-up photo opportunities.
- Causing Reactions: Some Pokémon react uniquely to Apples. For instance, throwing an Apple at a Pidgey might make it fly, or hitting a Magikarp could cause it to flop out of water.
- Luring to Specific Spots: Use Apples to guide Pokémon into better photographic positions, such as near other Pokémon for group shots or into areas that trigger special events.
- Revealing Hidden Pokémon: Occasionally, throwing an Apple into tall grass or behind obstacles can reveal a hidden Pokémon that comes out to investigate the food.
- Strategy Tip: Don't just throw randomly! Observe Pokémon behavior. A well-placed Apple can lead to a high-scoring "eating" pose or trigger a unique animation.
Pester Ball
- Location: Unlocked after reaching a certain score threshold. Professor Oak will provide it to you.
- Unlocking: Achieve a total score of 75,000 points across all your photographed Pokémon. Professor Oak will notify you when it's available.
- Uses:
- Startling Pokémon: Throw a Pester Ball at a Pokémon to get a reaction. This can make them angry, scared, or even cause them to perform a special move.
- Knocking Pokémon Out of Hiding: Similar to Apples, Pester Balls are excellent for flushing out shy or hidden Pokémon. They have a wider area of effect and a more forceful impact.
- Triggering Events: Many specific in-game events and Pokémon interactions are initiated by hitting a particular Pokémon or object with a Pester Ball. For example, hitting a Mankey might make it drop an item, or hitting certain rocks can reveal hidden pathways.
- Moving Obstacles: In some courses, Pester Balls can be used to move environmental objects, opening up new routes or revealing hidden Pokémon.
- Strategy Tip: Pester Balls are more aggressive than Apples. Use them when you need a strong reaction or to clear a path. Be mindful that some Pokémon might become agitated, which can be good for unique photos but might also make them flee.
Poké Flute
- Location: Unlocked later in the game, typically after demonstrating proficiency with the other items and capturing a wide variety of Pokémon. Professor Oak will present it to you.
- Unlocking: Continue to explore courses, discover new Pokémon, and improve your photography skills. The Poké Flute is a reward for significant progress.
- Uses:
- Waking Sleeping Pokémon: The primary use of the Poké Flute is to awaken sleeping Pokémon. Many rare or high-scoring poses are only available when a Pokémon is awake and active.
- Making Pokémon Dance: Some Pokémon will react to the music by dancing or performing unique movements, providing excellent photo opportunities.
- Triggering Group Interactions: Playing the Poké Flute can sometimes cause multiple Pokémon in an area to react simultaneously, leading to dynamic group shots.
- Revealing Hidden Pokémon/Events: In certain areas, playing the Poké Flute can trigger specific events or cause Pokémon to appear that wouldn't otherwise. For example, playing it near a specific rock might cause a hidden Pokémon to emerge.
- Strategy Tip: Experiment with playing the Poké Flute at different times and locations within a course. The timing can be crucial for waking up specific Pokémon or getting them to perform their best poses. Remember, you can play three different tunes with the Poké Flute, and some Pokémon react differently to each!
