Story/Plot Summary
Welcome, aspiring Pokémon photographer! Professor Oak has a grand vision: to document every Pokémon living on Pokémon Island and uncover the mystery behind the "Pokémon Signs." As his newest research assistant, your mission is to pilot the ZERO-ONE vehicle through diverse environments, snapping the best possible photos of wild Pokémon in their natural habitats. Your ultimate goal is to help Professor Oak complete the Pokémon Report and decipher the ancient Pokémon Signs.
Getting Started: The First Assignment
Upon your arrival, Professor Oak will brief you on the basics of Pokémon photography and the ZERO-ONE's controls. Your initial task is to prove your photographic prowess in the first available course:
- Beach Course: This introductory course is unlocked from the start. Focus on capturing clear shots of common Pokémon like Pidgey, Doduo, and Lapras. Don't worry too much about perfect scores yet; the goal is to familiarize yourself with the camera and the environment.
After each run, Professor Oak will evaluate your photos, providing feedback and assigning points based on criteria like size, pose, technique, and whether other Pokémon are in the shot. Accumulating enough points in a course will unlock new tools and subsequent courses.
Unlocking Essential Tools
As you progress and earn higher scores, Professor Oak will equip you with crucial items to interact with Pokémon and reveal hidden opportunities:
Pokémon Food (Pester Ball)
- Unlocks: After achieving a satisfactory score in the Beach Course.
- Strategy: Use Pokémon Food to lure shy Pokémon out of hiding or to encourage them to perform special actions. Throw it near Pokémon to get them to eat, which often results in unique poses.
- Location Hint: Try throwing food near the sleeping Snorlax in the Beach course to wake it up for a rare photo opportunity.
Pester Ball
- Unlocks: After achieving a satisfactory score in the Tunnel Course.
- Strategy: The Pester Ball can be used to startle Pokémon, knock them out of trees, or activate environmental triggers. Be mindful not to hit Pokémon too hard, as it might make them flee.
- Location Hint: In the Tunnel, use the Pester Ball to knock the Electrode off the track, clearing your path and revealing new Pokémon.
Poké Flute
- Unlocks: After achieving a satisfactory score in the Volcano Course.
- Strategy: The Poké Flute can wake up sleeping Pokémon or make certain Pokémon dance, providing excellent photo opportunities.
- Location Hint: Play the Poké Flute near the sleeping Charmander in the Volcano to evolve it into Charmeleon, then Charizard, for a high-scoring photo.
The Journey Through Pokémon Island
Your adventure will take you through six distinct environments, each with its own unique Pokémon and challenges:
- Beach: The starting point, featuring several land and water Pokémon. Master the basics here.
- Tunnel: A dark, industrial area with electric and rock-type Pokémon. Requires careful use of the Pester Ball.
- Volcano: A fiery landscape home to fire-type Pokémon. The Poké Flute is essential for revealing some of its secrets.
- River: A lush, flowing environment with many water and grass-type Pokémon. Look for interactions between different species.
- Cave: A mysterious, underground labyrinth with flying and psychic-type Pokémon. Light sources and precise timing are key.
- Valley: A challenging course with powerful Pokémon and strong currents. Requires advanced use of all your tools.
To unlock each subsequent course, you'll need to achieve a certain minimum score in the preceding one. Don't be afraid to replay courses multiple times to improve your scores and discover hidden Pokémon or interactions.
Unveiling the Pokémon Signs
Throughout your journey, Professor Oak will occasionally mention strange rock formations or patterns that resemble Pokémon. These are the "Pokémon Signs." Your ultimate objective is to photograph all six of these signs. Each sign is cleverly hidden within one of the courses and often requires specific actions or tools to reveal:
- Mew Sign: Found in the Rainbow Cloud course, which is unlocked after photographing all six Pokémon Signs.
- Articuno Sign: Located in the Cave course. Use a Pester Ball to knock the Jynx into the ice, revealing the sign.
- Zapdos Sign: Found in the River course. Hit the three Pikachu on the log with Pokémon Food to make them power up the sign.
- Moltres Sign: Hidden in the Volcano course. Throw a Pester Ball at the Magmar to make it fall into the lava, causing Moltres to appear and reveal its sign.
- Snorlax Sign: Located in the Beach course. Wake up Snorlax with Pokémon Food and then play the Poké Flute to make it dance, revealing the sign behind it.
- Dugtrio Sign: Found in the Tunnel course. Use a Pester Ball on the Diglett that pops up to make Dugtrio appear, revealing the sign.
Once all six Pokémon Signs are photographed and submitted to Professor Oak, a new, final course will become available: the Rainbow Cloud. This is where the legendary Pokémon Mew resides.
The Final Challenge: Mew and the Rainbow Cloud
The Rainbow Cloud is a unique course where your primary goal is to photograph the elusive Mew. This legendary Pokémon is incredibly shy and requires a specific strategy to capture a good shot:
- Strategy: Mew will appear surrounded by a psychic shield. You must hit its shield with a Pester Ball to temporarily stun it and make it vulnerable for a photo. It moves quickly, so precise timing is crucial. The Poké Flute can also be used to make Mew perform a special dance, offering a high-scoring opportunity.
Successfully photographing Mew and submitting a high-scoring photo will complete the Pokémon Report, bringing your adventure to a triumphant close. Professor Oak will commend your efforts, and you'll have the satisfaction of having documented all 63 Pokémon and solved the mystery of the Pokémon Signs!
