Special Poses & Interactions
In the original Pokémon Snap for Nintendo 64 (and its Wii/Wii U Virtual Console re-releases), capturing Pokémon in unique poses and during special interactions is the cornerstone of achieving high scores and completing Professor Oak's Photo Album. Unlike later installments, your primary tools are the trusty Apples, the disruptive Pester Balls, and the melodic Pokémon Flute. Mastering their use to elicit specific reactions from Pokémon is crucial for becoming a top-tier Pokémon photographer.
Understanding Your Tools for Interaction
Professor Oak provides three essential items that allow you to interact directly with the Pokémon in their natural habitats. Each has distinct properties and uses:
1. Apples (Food)
- Function: Thrown to attract, feed, or distract Pokémon.
- Effects:
- Eating: Many Pokémon will approach and eat an Apple, providing a classic feeding pose.
- Attraction: Apples can lure shy Pokémon out of hiding or draw them closer to your Zero-One vehicle.
- Distraction/Interaction: Some Pokémon react aggressively or playfully to Apples, batting them away or rolling them.
- Environmental Triggers: Apples can sometimes be used to activate environmental elements or trigger chain reactions between Pokémon.
- Strategy Tip: Lead your throws. Pokémon move, so anticipate their path. For feeding poses, aim slightly ahead of them or directly at their feet when they are stationary.
2. Pester Balls (Disruptive)
- Function: Thrown to startle, wake up, or move Pokémon.
- Effects:
- Startling: Most Pokémon will react negatively to a Pester Ball, often jumping, running away, or showing an angry expression. This can be useful for unique action shots.
- Waking: Sleeping Pokémon can be roused with a Pester Ball, leading to waking-up poses or causing them to move to a new location.
- Movement: Pester Balls can be used to clear paths blocked by Pokémon or to push them into specific positions for better photos or interactions.
- Environmental Triggers: Like Apples, Pester Balls can sometimes interact with the environment, such as knocking Pokémon off ledges or breaking objects.
- Strategy Tip: Use Pester Balls sparingly for positive interactions. They are best for eliciting surprised or aggressive poses, or for moving Pokémon that are obstructing a shot or a path.
3. Pokémon Flute (Melody)
- Function: Plays a tune to elicit musical reactions, awaken Pokémon, or trigger dances.
- Effects:
- Dancing/Singing: Many Pokémon have a unique dance or vocalization they perform when the Flute is played nearby. These are often high-scoring poses.
- Waking: Similar to Pester Balls, the Flute can wake up sleeping Pokémon, sometimes with a more pleasant reaction.
- Evolution: Crucially, the Pokémon Flute is the only item that can trigger certain Pokémon to evolve, a rare and highly valuable photo opportunity.
- Environmental Triggers: In some areas, playing the Flute can cause environmental changes or attract hidden Pokémon.
- Strategy Tip: The Flute has three different melodies. Experiment with all three on different Pokémon, as some respond better to a specific tune. Play it when Pokémon are in a clear view and not engaged in other actions for the best results.
Course-Specific Special Poses & Interactions
Each of the seven courses in Pokémon Snap is brimming with unique opportunities for special poses and interactions. Below are some prime examples and strategies for each course.
1. Beach
- Pikachu on a Surfboard:
- Action: Near the end of the course, you'll see a Pikachu on a log. Throw an Apple near it to lure it onto a surfboard that washes ashore.
- Photo Op: Capture Pikachu riding the waves for a high-scoring action shot.
- Doduo Race:
- Action: As you approach the Doduo, throw Pester Balls at them to make them run faster.
- Photo Op: Get a clear shot of them mid-stride.
- Snorlax Waking Up:
- Action: Throw multiple Apples at the sleeping Snorlax until it wakes up and stands.
- Photo Op: Capture Snorlax standing tall or stretching.
2. Tunnel
- Zubat Swarm & Pikachu:
- Action: In the cavern with the Zubat swarm, throw Pester Balls at the Electrode to make them explode, clearing the path and revealing a Pikachu.
- Photo Op: Capture Pikachu in the cleared area, or the Electrode exploding.
- Diglett & Dugtrio:
- Action: As you pass the Diglett, throw Apples at them. They will pop up more frequently, and eventually, Dugtrio will appear.
- Photo Op: Get a shot of all three heads of Dugtrio.
- Magikarp Evolution to Gyarados:
- Action: Knock Magikarp into the waterfall using an Apple or Pester Ball. It will evolve into Gyarados.
- Photo Op: Capture the massive Gyarados as it emerges from the water. This is a critical evolution shot.
3. Volcano
- Charmander Evolution to Charmeleon:
- Action: Lure three Charmander near the lava pit using Apples. Play the Pokémon Flute, and they will dance. A specific Charmander will then evolve.
- Photo Op: Capture the evolving Charmander or the Charmeleon immediately after evolution.
- Magmar Fire Dance:
- Action: Throw Apples at the Magmar to make them angry, then play the Pokémon Flute. They will perform a fiery dance.
- Photo Op: Capture Magmar mid-dance with flames around it.
- Rapidash Jumping:
- Action: As you approach the Rapidash, play the Pokémon Flute. It will often jump over the lava.
- Photo Op: Get a clear shot of Rapidash mid-jump.
4. River
- Porygon & Bulbasaur:
- Action: Throw Apples at the Porygon to make them change direction, potentially leading them towards the Bulbasaur.
- Photo Op: Capture Porygon interacting with Bulbasaur, or Bulbasaur reacting to Porygon.
- Vileplume Dance:
- Action: Throw Apples at the Oddish to make them evolve into Gloom, then throw more Apples at Gloom to make them evolve into Vileplume. Play the Pokémon Flute near Vileplume.
- Photo Op: Capture Vileplume dancing.
- Metapod & Butterfree:
- Action: Throw Pester Balls at the Metapod hanging from trees to knock them down. Some will evolve into Butterfree.
- Photo Op: Capture Butterfree flying or Metapod falling.
5. Cave
- Jynx & Articuno:
- Action: Knock the Jynx off the ledge with a Pester Ball. It will fall onto a switch, revealing Articuno's egg. Play the Pokémon Flute to hatch the egg.
- Photo Op: Capture Articuno flying or Jynx falling. This is a crucial legendary Pokémon interaction.
- Mewtwo's Bubble Shield:
- Action: At the end of the course, throw Pester Balls at Mewtwo's bubble shield to break it.
- Photo Op: Capture Mewtwo once its shield is broken, or the moment the shield shatters.
- Magnemite Chain:
- Action: Throw Apples at the Magnemite to make them line up and create a chain.
- Photo Op: Capture the Magnemite chain.
6. Valley
- Mankey & Primeape:
- Action: Throw Apples at the Mankey to make them angry, then throw Pester Balls at the Primeape to make it react.
- Photo Op: Capture Primeape in an aggressive pose.
- Starmie & Lapras:
- Action: Throw Apples at the Starmie to make them jump out of the water. Play the Pokémon Flute near the Lapras to make it sing.
- Photo Op: Capture Starmie jumping or Lapras singing.
- Slowpoke Evolution to Slowbro:
- Action: Lure a Slowpoke to the end of the course where a Shellder is waiting. Throw an Apple to make Slowpoke stick its tail in the water, allowing Shellder to bite it and trigger evolution.
- Photo Op: Capture the Slowpoke evolving into Slowbro.
7. Rainbow Cloud (Final Course)
- Mew's Energy Shield:
- Action: Mew is surrounded by a psychic shield. Throw Pester Balls at the shield to temporarily stun Mew, then quickly throw Apples at it to get a clear shot.
- Photo Op: Capture Mew without its shield, or its unique spinning animation. This is the ultimate challenge for a perfect shot.
General Strategies for High Scores
- Experimentation is Key: Don't be afraid to try different combinations of Apples, Pester Balls, and the Pokémon Flute. Many unique interactions are discovered through trial and error.
- Timing: Precision timing is crucial. Some poses last only a fraction of a second. Be ready to snap multiple photos in quick succession.
- Anticipate Movement: Learn the paths and behaviors of Pokémon. Throw items ahead of them to intercept their movement or guide them into specific positions.
- Chain Reactions: Look for opportunities where one Pokémon's reaction triggers another. These often lead to the highest-scoring and most unique photos.
- Environmental Interaction: Pay attention to the environment. Some rocks, plants, or objects can be interacted with using your items to reveal hidden Pokémon or trigger events.
- Review Your Photos: After each run, carefully review all your photos. Sometimes a seemingly ordinary shot might contain a hidden detail or a rare pose you missed in the heat of the moment.
- Multiple Attempts: Don't expect to get every perfect shot on your first try. Replay courses multiple times, focusing on different Pokémon and interactions each time.
By diligently applying these strategies and understanding the nuances of your tools, you'll be well on your way to filling Professor Oak's Photo Album with magnificent and high-scoring pictures of every Pokémon!
