TMs and Move Tutors
Technical Machines (TMs) are invaluable single-use items that allow you to teach a specific move to a compatible Pokémon, significantly expanding their movepool and strategic options. These TMs can be discovered throughout the Alola region, often found in hidden locations, received as rewards for completing trials or defeating trainers, or purchased from various shops. Each TM corresponds to a particular move, ranging from powerful offensive attacks like Thunderbolt and Flamethrower to useful status-inflicting moves like Will-O-Wisp or Thunder Wave. Once a TM is used, it is consumed, so strategic decision-making is key to determining which Pokémon will benefit most from its effect. In addition to TMs, Pokémon Sun and Moon also feature Move Tutors. These specialized NPCs, often found in various towns and cities, particularly in the post-game, can teach your Pokémon powerful and sometimes unique moves. Unlike TMs, Move Tutors can often teach moves multiple times, but they typically require a currency known as Battle Points (BP) in exchange for their services. Battle Points are earned by participating in the Battle Tree and achieving winning streaks. Move Tutors can be crucial for filling in gaps in a Pokémon's move coverage or for teaching them sature moves that they might not learn through leveling up. Mastering the acquisition and use of both TMs and Move Tutors is essential for optimizing your Pokémon's battle readiness.
