Berries & Their Uses
Berries are incredibly versatile items in the Galar region, offering benefits from in-battle healing to stat manipulation and even enhancing your cooking prowess. Understanding how to acquire and use them effectively will give you a significant edge throughout your journey.
Acquiring Berries
There are several reliable ways to stock up on these valuable fruits:
- Berry Trees: These are your primary source. You'll find sparkling Berry Trees scattered across the Wild Area and various routes. Approach a tree and interact with it to shake it. Be careful not to shake too many times in a row, or a Pokémon might fall out and initiate a battle, causing you to lose some of the collected berries! Different trees yield different types of berries, so explore thoroughly.
- Wild Area Traders: Certain NPCs in the Wild Area, particularly near the entrances to different zones, will trade you berries for Watts. Their stock changes daily, so check back often for specific berries you might need.
- Raid Battles: Completing Max Raid Battles often rewards you with a selection of berries, especially those that reduce specific EV stats.
- Battle Tower: While primarily for competitive items, the Battle Tower sometimes offers berries as rewards for winning streaks or for purchase with Battle Points (BP).
Berry Types and Their Effects
Berries broadly fall into several categories based on their primary effects:
In-Battle Healing Berries
These berries are consumed automatically when a Pokémon's HP drops below a certain threshold, providing a timely recovery.
- Oran Berry: Restores 10 HP. A common early-game berry.
- Sitrus Berry: Restores 25% of the Pokémon's maximum HP. Incredibly useful for sustaining your team in longer battles.
- Figy, Wiki, Mago, Aguav, Iapapa Berries: These berries restore 33% of max HP but will confuse the Pokémon if it dislikes the taste (based on its nature). For example, a Pokémon with a Brave nature (which dislikes dry flavors) would be confused by a Figy Berry.
Status Condition Healing Berries
These berries cure specific status conditions, making them invaluable for tough trainers or wild encounters.
- Cheri Berry: Cures Paralysis.
- Chesto Berry: Cures Sleep.
- Pecha Berry: Cures Poison.
- Rawst Berry: Cures Burn.
- Aspear Berry: Cures Freeze.
- Persim Berry: Cures Confusion.
- Lum Berry: Cures any status condition. This is the ultimate status healer and highly sought after.
EV-Reducing Berries
These berries are crucial for competitive breeding and training. They reduce a specific Effort Value (EV) stat by 10 points and increase the Pokémon's friendship. This allows you to fine-tune your Pokémon's stats without needing to reset them entirely.
- Pomeg Berry: Reduces HP EVs.
- Kelpsy Berry: Reduces Attack EVs.
- Qualot Berry: Reduces Defense EVs.
- Hondew Berry: Reduces Special Attack EVs.
- Grepa Berry: Reduces Special Defense EVs.
- Tamato Berry: Reduces Speed EVs.
Strategy Tip: If you accidentally over-train an EV stat, these berries are your best friends. For example, if your Cinderace has too many Special Attack EVs, feed it Hondew Berries until the stat is where you want it.
Type-Resist Berries
These berries halve the damage from the first super effective attack of a specific type. They are consumed upon activation and can turn the tide of a battle.
- Occa Berry: Halves damage from a Fire-type attack.
- Passho Berry: Halves damage from a Water-type attack.
- Wacan Berry: Halves damage from an Electric-type attack.
- Rindo Berry: Halves damage from a Grass-type attack.
- Yache Berry: Halves damage from an Ice-type attack.
- Chople Berry: Halves damage from a Fighting-type attack.
- Kebia Berry: Halves damage from a Poison-type attack.
- Shuca Berry: Halves damage from a Ground-type attack.
- Coba Berry: Halves damage from a Flying-type attack.
- Payapa Berry: Halves damage from a Psychic-type attack.
- Tanga Berry: Halves damage from a Bug-type attack.
- Charti Berry: Halves damage from a Rock-type attack.
- Kasib Berry: Halves damage from a Ghost-type attack.
- Haban Berry: Halves damage from a Dragon-type attack.
- Colbur Berry: Halves damage from a Dark-type attack.
- Babiri Berry: Halves damage from a Steel-type attack.
- Chilan Berry: Halves damage from a Normal-type attack.
Strategy Tip: Equip these berries on Pokémon that have a critical weakness to a common attacking type. For instance, a Dragon-type Pokémon holding a Haban Berry can survive a super effective Dragon-type attack, allowing it to retaliate.
Other Notable Berries
- Leppa Berry: Restores 10 PP to a move. Extremely useful for long dungeons or trainers with high PP moves.
- Moomoo Milk: While not a berry, it's a healing item often found near berry trees. Restores 100 HP.
Berries and Curry Cooking
Berries are essential ingredients for making delicious Curry at your Pokémon Camp. Each berry contributes to the flavor profile of your curry, influencing its taste (Spicy, Dry, Sweet, Bitter, Sour) and rarity. The rarer the berry, the more likely you are to achieve a higher-tier curry, like a "Charizard-Class" curry.
Flavor Profiles of Common Berries:
- Spicy: Cheri, Leppa, Figy
- Dry: Chesto, Oran, Wiki
- Sweet: Pecha, Sitrus, Mago
- Bitter: Rawst, Persim, Aguav
- Sour: Aspear, Lum, Iapapa
Curry Strategy: When cooking, aim for a balance of flavors or lean into a specific one if you're trying to achieve a particular curry type. Using several high-rarity berries (like the EV-reducing or Type-Resist berries) will significantly boost your chances of making a top-tier curry, which in turn provides greater friendship and experience boosts for your Pokémon.
