Sky Battles & Inverse Battles

Pokémon X and Y introduce two unique battle formats that challenge trainers in new ways: Sky Battles and Inverse Battles. Understanding their mechanics and preparing accordingly can give you a significant edge.

Sky Battles

Sky Battles are special encounters where only Flying-type Pokémon or Pokémon with the Levitate ability can participate. These battles typically occur in specific locations, often on higher ledges or bridges, and are initiated by certain NPCs.

Where to Find Sky Battles

  • Route 8 (Muraille Coast): The first Sky Battle opportunity is with a Sky Trainer on Route 8. You'll need a Pokémon capable of flying or levitating to accept.
  • Route 10 (Menhir Trail): Another Sky Trainer can be found here, often on a raised platform.
  • Route 11 (Misty Way): Look for trainers perched on cliffs or elevated paths.
  • Route 12 (Azure Bay): Several trainers here will challenge you to Sky Battles.
  • Route 13 (Lumiose Badlands): Be mindful of the terrain; Sky Trainers are usually in accessible but elevated spots.
  • Route 14 (Laverre Nature Path): Keep an eye out for trainers on bridges or high ground.
  • Route 15 (Brun Way): Similar to other routes, elevated sections often house Sky Trainers.
  • Route 16 (Melancolie Path): More opportunities to test your aerial team.
  • Route 17 (Mamoswine Road): Even in snowy areas, Sky Trainers can be found.
  • Route 18 (Dragonmark Chamber): Expect challenging Sky Battles here.
  • Route 19 (Vallee Etroite Way): The final stretch before Victory Road offers more Sky Battle encounters.

Strategy for Sky Battles

Since only Flying-type or Levitate Pokémon can participate, type matchups become crucial. Consider the following:

  • Electric-type Moves: These are super effective against most Flying-types. Pokémon like Jolteon, Raichu, or even a Heliolisk (if it has Levitate or is Flying-type) can be invaluable.
  • Rock-type Moves: Another strong counter to Flying-types. Pokémon like Tyrantrum or Gigalith (if they can learn a Flying-type move or have Levitate, though less common) can be useful, but generally, focus on moves like Stone Edge or Rock Slide.
  • Ice-type Moves: Many Flying-types are also Dragon, Grass, or Ground, making Ice-type moves highly effective. Consider Pokémon like Weavile or Mamoswine (if they meet the criteria).
  • Coverage: Ensure your Sky Battle team has diverse move sets to cover various potential opponents. Don't rely solely on one attack type.
  • Status Conditions: Paralyzing, poisoning, or putting opponents to sleep can turn the tide of a Sky Battle, especially against stronger foes.

Rewards

Winning Sky Battles often yields useful items like Sky Plate, Sharp Beak, or even TMs for Flying-type moves. They also provide good experience for your aerial team.

Inverse Battles

Inverse Battles are a unique challenge where the effectiveness of all type matchups is reversed. What was once super effective becomes not very effective, and vice versa. This completely flips traditional Pokémon strategy on its head.

Where to Find Inverse Battles

Inverse Battles are initiated by a specific NPC known as the Inverse Battle Guy. He is located in a house on Route 18 (Dragonmark Chamber). You can challenge him once per day.

Strategy for Inverse Battles

This is where your knowledge of type charts gets twisted. Here's how to approach them:

  • Previously Weak Types are Strong:
    • If a move was 4x super effective (e.g., Fighting against Rock/Dark), it's now 4x not very effective.
    • If a move was 2x super effective (e.g., Fire against Grass), it's now 2x not very effective.
  • Previously Strong Types are Weak:
    • If a move was 0.5x not very effective (e.g., Fire against Water), it's now 2x super effective.
    • If a move was 0.25x not very effective (e.g., Fighting against Poison/Flying), it's now 4x super effective.
  • Immunities Become Super Effective:
    • This is the most crucial aspect. If a Pokémon was immune to a type (e.g., Ground to Electric, Ghost to Normal/Fighting, Flying to Ground, Steel to Poison), that type's moves are now 2x super effective against it! This means a Ground-type Pokémon will take 2x damage from Electric-type moves in an Inverse Battle.
  • Recommended Pokémon Types:
    • Ghost-type: Normally immune to Normal and Fighting, they now take 2x damage from them. However, Ghost-type moves are normally resisted by Dark and Steel, making them 2x super effective in Inverse Battles.
    • Dark-type: Normally resisted by Fighting, Fairy, and Dark, these types will now take 2x damage from Dark moves.
    • Normal-type: Normally resisted by Rock and Steel, these types will now take 2x damage from Normal moves.
  • Avoid Pokémon with Many Weaknesses: Pokémon with many normal weaknesses will now have many resistances, which sounds good. However, Pokémon with many normal resistances will now have many weaknesses. For example, Steel-types are normally resistant to many types, but in an Inverse Battle, they will be weak to many types.
  • Focus on STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) Reversals: If your Pokémon has a STAB move that is normally resisted by many types, it will be incredibly powerful in an Inverse Battle.

Rewards

The Inverse Battle Guy rewards you based on how well you perform. Winning often grants you valuable items such as Heart Scales, Rare Candies, or even PP Ups. The more Pokémon you defeat, the better the reward, so aim for a clean sweep!
