Trainer List & Notable Battles
Throughout your journey in the Kalos region, you'll encounter numerous trainers eager to test their Pokémon against yours. While many are optional, some battles are mandatory to progress the story or offer valuable rewards. This section details key trainers, their Pokémon, and strategies to ensure your victory.
Early Game Encounters (Santalune Forest & Route 3)
The initial routes and the Santalune Forest introduce you to the core mechanics of trainer battles. These encounters are generally straightforward, but it's a good opportunity to learn type matchups and build your team.
Santalune Forest
As you navigate the Santalune Forest, you'll be accompanied by your friends, Shauna, Serena/Calem, and Tierno. They will occasionally heal your Pokémon, making this an excellent place to grind a few levels without needing to return to a Pokémon Center.
- Youngster Joey: Rattata (Lv. 3). A simple Normal-type. Any attacking move will suffice.
- Lass Sarah: Pidgey (Lv. 3). A Flying/Normal-type. Rock-type moves are super effective, but early game, any strong attack works.
- Bug Catcher Alan: Caterpie (Lv. 3), Weedle (Lv. 3). Both are Bug-types. Flying or Fire-type moves are effective. Your Fennekin or a Fletchling (caught on Route 2) will make short work of them.
Strategy Tip: Focus on leveling up your starter and any early-game captures like Fletchling or Scatterbug. Don't be afraid to switch Pokémon to gain experience for multiple team members.
Route 3 - Ouvert Way
Route 3 features a few more trainers before you reach Santalune City. These battles are slightly tougher than those in the forest, so ensure your Pokémon are healed.
- Schoolboy Ryan: Zigzagoon (Lv. 5). Another Normal-type. Straightforward.
- Lass Anna: Bidoof (Lv. 5). Normal/Water-type. Grass or Electric-type moves are super effective.
- Youngster Dave: Fletchling (Lv. 5). Flying/Normal-type. Rock-type moves are ideal, but Electric or Ice moves also work.
Item Location: Near the end of Route 3, before Santalune City, you can find a hidden Antidote in the tall grass and a visible Potion by a tree.
Santalune City Gym Leader: Viola
Your first Gym Leader challenge awaits in Santalune City. Viola specializes in Bug-type Pokémon. Her Gym is a spider web maze; stepping on the wrong part will drop you to the floor below, requiring you to climb back up. The trainers within the Gym are optional but provide good experience.
Gym Trainers
- Bug Catcher Barnaby: Spewpa (Lv. 10). Bug-type. Weak to Fire, Flying, and Rock.
- Lass Charlotte: Ledyba (Lv. 8), Combee (Lv. 8). Ledyba is Bug/Flying, Combee is Bug/Flying. Both are weak to Fire, Flying, Electric, Ice, and Rock.
Gym Leader Viola Battle
Viola's Pokémon:
- Surskit (Lv. 10): Bug/Water-type.
- Vivillon (Lv. 12): Bug/Flying-type.
Strategy:
- Surskit: This Pokémon is tricky due to its Water typing. Grass or Electric-type moves are super effective. If you chose Chespin, its Grass-type moves will be very effective. If you have a Pikachu (caught on Route 3) or an Electric-type move on another Pokémon, use it here. Avoid Fire-type moves.
- Vivillon: This is Viola's ace. Its Bug/Flying typing makes it extremely vulnerable to Rock-type moves (4x weakness!). If you caught a Litleo on Route 22, its Ember will be effective. Fletchling's Peck will also do decent damage. If you have a Pokémon with Rock Tomb (TM found in the Gym after defeating Viola), that would be devastating. Be wary of its Infestation move, which can trap and damage your Pokémon over several turns.
Recommended Pokémon:
- Fennekin (or Delphox): Fire-type moves are super effective against Vivillon.
- Chespin (or Quilladin): Grass-type moves are super effective against Surskit.
- Pikachu: Electric-type moves are super effective against Surskit.
- Fletchling (or Fletchinder): Flying-type moves are super effective against both.
- Litleo: Fire-type moves are super effective against Vivillon.
Reward: Upon defeating Viola, you'll receive the Bug Badge, allowing Pokémon up to Level 30 to obey you, and TM83 Infestation. She will also give you a few Potions.
Post-Gym Tip: After the battle, talk to the man near the entrance of the Gym to receive TM83 Infestation. This move can be useful for trapping opponents.
