Fairy Type Introduction & Mechanics
Welcome, trainers, to the Kalos region! With Pokémon X and Y, a brand new Pokémon type has been introduced: the enchanting Fairy type. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about this mystical new addition, from understanding its strengths and weaknesses to finding your first Fairy-type Pokémon and leveraging their unique combat advantages.
Understanding the Fairy Type
The Fairy type was created to rebalance the Pokémon ecosystem, particularly by providing a much-needed counter to the previously dominant Dragon type. Fairy-type Pokémon are often characterized by their whimsical appearance and powerful special attacks.
Type Effectiveness Chart
Mastering type matchups is crucial for any aspiring Pokémon Master. Here’s how the Fairy type interacts with other types in battle:
- Super Effective Against (2x Damage):
- Fighting: Fairy-type moves will deal massive damage to Fighting-type Pokémon.
- Dragon: This is the Fairy type's most significant role; they are the ultimate Dragon slayers!
- Dark: Fairy attacks are highly effective against Dark-type Pokémon.
- Resisted By (0.5x Damage):
- Poison: Be wary of Poison-type attacks, as they resist Fairy moves.
- Steel: Steel-type Pokémon are particularly resilient against Fairy attacks.
- Fire: Fire-type Pokémon also take reduced damage from Fairy moves.
- Resists (0.5x Damage From):
- Fighting: Fairy-type Pokémon take half damage from Fighting-type attacks.
- Bug: Bug-type moves are not very effective against Fairy types.
- Dark: Fairy Pokémon resist Dark-type attacks.
- Immune To (0 Damage From):
- Dragon: Fairy-type Pokémon are completely immune to Dragon-type attacks! This makes them invaluable for tackling powerful Dragon-type opponents.
- Weak To (2x Damage From):
- Poison: Poison-type moves are super effective against Fairy-type Pokémon.
- Steel: Steel-type moves also deal double damage to Fairy types.
Finding Your First Fairy-Type Pokémon
You won't have to wait long to encounter Fairy-type Pokémon in Kalos. Here’s how to get started:
Early Game Encounters
- Route 3: As you venture onto Route 3, one of the first areas you'll explore after Aquacorde Town, keep an eye out for Azurill. This adorable Water/Fairy type can be found in the tall grass. While its base form is pure Normal, it evolves into Marill and then Azumarill, gaining the Fairy typing.
- Santalune Forest: Inside Santalune Forest, you might also encounter Cottonee (Pokémon Y exclusive) or Petilil (Pokémon X exclusive). While not pure Fairy types, they represent early opportunities to diversify your team with Pokémon that can eventually learn Fairy-type moves or evolve into dual-types that benefit from Fairy mechanics.
- Route 22 (Detour): Before challenging the Santalune City Gym, consider a brief detour to Route 22. Here, you can find Flabébé, the first pure Fairy-type Pokémon you're likely to encounter. Flabébé comes in various flower colors (red, yellow, orange, blue, white), and catching one early provides a solid Fairy-type attacker for your team.
Mid to Late Game Opportunities
- Connecting Cave: Later in your journey, within the Connecting Cave, you can find Mawile (Pokémon X exclusive), a Steel/Fairy type, or Meditite (Pokémon Y exclusive) which doesn't gain Fairy typing but is a strong Fighting-type. Mawile is an excellent defensive Fairy option.
- Friend Safari: Once you've defeated the Elite Four and gained access to the Friend Safari in Kiloude City, you can find a wider variety of Fairy-type Pokémon depending on your friends' registered safaris. This is an excellent way to hunt for specific Fairy types with good IVs or Hidden Abilities.
- Evolution: Many existing Pokémon from previous generations have gained the Fairy typing upon evolution. For example, Jigglypuff and Clefairy (found in various routes later in the game) evolve into Wigglytuff and Clefable, respectively, both gaining the Fairy type. Eevee can also evolve into the brand new Fairy-type Eeveelution, Sylveon, by having high affection in Pokémon-Amie and knowing a Fairy-type move when it levels up.
Key Fairy-Type Moves and TMs
To maximize the potential of your Fairy-type Pokémon, you'll want to teach them powerful Fairy-type moves. Here are some notable ones:
- Disarming Voice: A special Fairy-type move with 40 power that always hits, ignoring accuracy checks. Flabébé learns this early.
- Draining Kiss: A special Fairy-type move with 50 power that restores HP equal to 75% of the damage dealt. A great move for sustainability. Sylveon learns this naturally.
- Moonblast: A powerful special Fairy-type move with 95 power and a 30% chance to lower the target's Special Attack by one stage. Many evolved Fairy types learn this.
- Play Rough: A strong physical Fairy-type move with 90 power and a 10% chance to lower the target's Attack by one stage. Excellent for physical Fairy attackers like Azumarill.
- TM99 - Dazzling Gleam: This special Fairy-type move hits all adjacent opponents in a double battle with 80 power. You can obtain TM99 from the Laverre City Gym Leader, Valerie, after defeating her.
Strategies for Using Fairy Types
Fairy-type Pokémon are invaluable additions to any team, especially when facing common threats:
- Dragon Slayer: Always keep a Fairy-type Pokémon on hand when you anticipate facing Dragon-type opponents. Their immunity to Dragon moves and super-effective Fairy attacks make them perfect counters.
- Fighting and Dark Checks: Fairy types also excel at shutting down powerful Fighting and Dark-type Pokémon, which are prevalent throughout the game.
- Defensive Utility: Many Fairy-type Pokémon, like Clefable or Sylveon, boast good Special Defense, allowing them to tank special attacks from Dragon or Dark types.
- Offensive Pressure: With moves like Moonblast and Play Rough, Fairy types can dish out significant damage to their weaknesses.
By understanding the Fairy type's unique mechanics and incorporating them into your team, you'll be well-prepared to face any challenge the Kalos region throws your way!
