Status Conditions & Cures
Navigating the Kanto region means facing off against countless Trainers and wild Pokémon. During these battles, your Pokémon can be afflicted with various status conditions, which can severely hinder their performance or even lead to their defeat. Understanding these conditions and how to cure them is crucial for any aspiring Pokémon Master.
Major Status Conditions
These conditions persist outside of battle until cured, affecting your Pokémon's stats or health over time.
- Poison (PSN):
- Effect: Your Pokémon loses 1 HP for every 4 steps taken on the overworld. In battle, it loses 1/8th of its maximum HP at the end of each turn.
- Cure Items:
- Antidote: Cures Poison. Can be purchased at any Poké Mart for 100 P.
- Full Heal: Cures all major status conditions. Can be purchased at most Poké Marts for 600 P (available after Pewter City).
- Full Restore: Fully restores HP and cures all major status conditions. Expensive, but invaluable in a pinch. Available in later game Poké Marts for 3000 P.
- Strategy: Early in the game, Antidotes are your best friend. Always carry a few, especially when exploring areas like Viridian Forest where many Bug-type Pokémon can inflict Poison.
- Paralysis (PAR):
- Effect: Reduces your Pokémon's Speed stat by 75%. There's also a 25% chance it will be unable to attack during a turn.
- Cure Items:
- Paralyze Heal: Cures Paralysis. Can be purchased at any Poké Mart for 200 P.
- Full Heal: Cures all major status conditions.
- Full Restore: Fully restores HP and cures all major status conditions.
- Strategy: Paralysis can be incredibly frustrating, especially against faster opponents. Keep Paralyze Heals on hand when facing Electric-type Pokémon or those that use moves like Thunder Wave.
- Burn (BRN):
- Effect: Reduces your Pokémon's Attack stat by 50%. In battle, it loses 1/8th of its maximum HP at the end of each turn.
- Cure Items:
- Burn Heal: Cures Burn. Can be purchased at any Poké Mart for 250 P.
- Full Heal: Cures all major status conditions.
- Full Restore: Fully restores HP and cures all major status conditions.
- Strategy: Burn is particularly detrimental to physical attackers. Stock up on Burn Heals before challenging Fire-type Gym Leaders or exploring areas with many Fire-type wild Pokémon.
- Freeze (FRZ):
- Effect: Your Pokémon is completely unable to move or attack. This is the rarest status condition to inflict and be inflicted by.
- Cure Items:
- Ice Heal: Cures Freeze. Can be purchased at any Poké Mart for 250 P.
- Full Heal: Cures all major status conditions.
- Full Restore: Fully restores HP and cures all major status conditions.
- Strategy: While rare, Freeze can be devastating. If a Pokémon is frozen, use an Ice Heal immediately. Fortunately, it often thaws out on its own after a few turns in battle.
- Sleep (SLP):
- Effect: Your Pokémon is unable to move or attack for 1-7 turns.
- Cure Items:
- Awakening: Cures Sleep. Can be purchased at any Poké Mart for 250 P.
- Full Heal: Cures all major status conditions.
- Full Restore: Fully restores HP and cures all major status conditions.
- Strategy: Sleep can render your Pokémon useless. Awakens are essential when facing Pokémon that use moves like Sleep Powder or Hypnosis.
Minor Status Conditions (In-Battle Only)
These conditions only last for the duration of the current battle and typically resolve themselves once the Pokémon is switched out or the battle ends.
- Confusion:
- Effect: Your Pokémon has a 50% chance to hit itself instead of the opponent. Lasts for 2-5 turns.
- Cure Items: None specifically. Switching out the Pokémon or waiting for it to wear off are your only options.
- Strategy: If a Pokémon is confused, consider switching it out to remove the condition immediately.
- Infatuation:
- Effect: If the opponent is of the opposite gender, your Pokémon has a 50% chance of being unable to attack. Lasts until the opponent is switched out or faints.
- Cure Items: None specifically. Switching out the Pokémon is the only way to remove it.
- Strategy: Infatuation can be annoying. If you encounter a Pokémon using Attract, switch to a Pokémon of the same gender or a genderless one.
- Leech Seed:
- Effect: The seeded Pokémon loses 1/8th of its maximum HP at the end of each turn, and that HP is restored to the Pokémon that used Leech Seed. Lasts until the seeded Pokémon is switched out.
- Cure Items: None specifically. Switching out the Pokémon is the only way to remove it.
- Strategy: If your Pokémon is Leech Seeded, switch it out immediately to stop the HP drain.
General Curing Strategies
- Poké Centers: The most reliable and free way to cure all status conditions and restore HP is to visit any Pokémon Center. Always make a stop before heading into a new area or a Gym battle.
- Healing Items: Always carry a good stock of specific cure items (Antidote, Paralyze Heal, etc.) or, for convenience, a few Full Heals or Full Restores. These can be purchased at Poké Marts in every major town.
- Escape Rope: If your team is in dire straits with multiple status conditions and low HP in a dungeon, an Escape Rope can get you back to the last Pokémon Center quickly. Purchase them at Poké Marts for 550 P.
- Pikachu's Health: Remember that your starter Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow will often react negatively to certain status conditions. Keep an eye on its mood!
By mastering these cures and strategies, you'll ensure your Pokémon are always ready for battle, no matter what challenges Kanto throws your way!
