Post-Game Content

Congratulations, Trainer! You've conquered the Elite Four and become the Pokémon League Champion. But the adventure in Kanto is far from over! Pokémon Yellow offers a wealth of post-game activities, from completing your Pokédex to challenging yourself with new strategies. This detailed guide will help you navigate the exciting content available after your initial victory.

Completing the Pokédex: Catch 'Em All!

Your primary goal post-game is often to catch all 151 Pokémon. While trading with other versions (Red and Blue) is the traditional method for version-exclusive Pokémon, Pokémon Yellow offers unique ways to obtain many of them without trading, primarily through the infamous "Trainer-Fly" glitch (also known as the Mew Glitch).

The Trainer-Fly Glitch (Mew Glitch)

This powerful glitch allows you to encounter virtually any Pokémon in the game, including Mew, by manipulating the game's memory. While it can be complex, mastering it is key to a no-trade 151 Pokédex.

  • Prerequisites:
    • A Pokémon with the move Fly.
    • A Pokémon with the move Teleport (or an Escape Rope).
    • An un-battled trainer on a route you can Fly from.
    • An un-battled trainer who will walk towards you when you enter their line of sight.
  • General Steps:
    1. Stand one step away from a trainer you can Fly from (e.g., the Gambler on Route 8, the Jr. Trainer♀ on Route 25).
    2. Save your game.
    3. Step into the trainer's line of sight, and immediately press START.
    4. Select your Pokémon with Fly and use it to fly to a different town (e.g., Cerulean City).
    5. The trainer will have an exclamation mark over their head, but you will have flown away. Your START button will now be disabled.
    6. Walk to a route with an un-battled trainer who will walk towards you (e.g., the Youngster on Route 24, the Super Nerd in the Pokémon Mansion).
    7. Enter their line of sight. They will walk towards you, initiating a battle.
    8. Defeat or run from this trainer.
    9. Immediately after the battle, your START button will re-enable, and a wild Pokémon will appear. This Pokémon's species is determined by the Special stat of the last Pokémon you battled (the second trainer).
  • Targeting Specific Pokémon:
    • To catch Mew: The second trainer's last Pokémon must have a Special stat of 21. A common target is the Super Nerd in the Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island, whose Grimer has a Special stat of 21.
    • To catch Ditto: The second trainer's last Pokémon must have a Special stat of 34.
    • To catch Articuno: The second trainer's last Pokémon must have a Special stat of 29.
    • To catch Zapdos: The second trainer's last Pokémon must have a Special stat of 28.
    • To catch Moltres: The second trainer's last Pokémon must have a Special stat of 27.
  • Important Notes:
    • The level of the encountered Pokémon is often very low (Level 7).
    • Refer to an "Advanced Battling FAQ" or "Trainer-Fly Guide" for a comprehensive list of trainers and their Pokémon's Special stats to target specific encounters.
    • Be prepared with plenty of Poké Balls, Great Balls, and Ultra Balls.

Version Exclusive Pokémon (No Trading)

While some Pokémon are traditionally exclusive to Red and Blue, the Trainer-Fly glitch allows you to obtain them in Yellow. Here are some examples:

  • Ekans/Arbok: Not naturally found in Yellow. Use the Trainer-Fly glitch targeting a Special stat of 23 (Ekans) or 104 (Arbok).
  • Meowth/Persian: Not naturally found in Yellow. Use the Trainer-Fly glitch targeting a Special stat of 61 (Meowth) or 103 (Persian).
  • Jynx: Not naturally found in Yellow. Use the Trainer-Fly glitch targeting a Special stat of 105.
  • Magmar: Not naturally found in Yellow. Use the Trainer-Fly glitch targeting a Special stat of 106.
  • Electabuzz: Not naturally found in Yellow. Use the Trainer-Fly glitch targeting a Special stat of 107.

Legendary Pokémon

Ensure you've caught all the legendary birds and Mewtwo:

  • Articuno: Found deep within the Seafoam Islands. Requires Strength and Surf.
  • Zapdos: Located in the Power Plant. Requires Surf.
  • Moltres: Resides in Victory Road. Requires Strength and Surf.
  • Mewtwo: Found in the Cerulean Cave (also known as the Unknown Dungeon), accessible only after becoming Champion. This is a high-level encounter, so bring your strongest Pokémon and plenty of Ultra Balls.

Rematch the Elite Four

The Elite Four and Champion can be re-challenged as many times as you like. This is an excellent way to gain experience for your Pokémon, test new team compositions, and earn money. Their Pokémon levels remain the same, but it's still a formidable challenge.

Item Hunting and Exploration

Many valuable items and hidden secrets might have been missed during your initial playthrough. Use the Itemfinder to uncover hidden items across Kanto.

  • Hidden Items: Revisit every route, cave, and building. The Itemfinder will vibrate when a hidden item is nearby.
  • Rare Candies: Look for these in various locations like Mt. Moon, Rock Tunnel, and the Pokémon Mansion. They are invaluable for quickly leveling up Pokémon.
  • TMs: Ensure you've collected all available Technical Machines. Some are given by NPCs, others are found in the environment, and a few are prizes at the Celadon Game Corner.
  • Safari Zone: Spend time in the Safari Zone to catch rare Pokémon like Chansey, Kangaskhan, and Scyther/Pinsir. Remember the time and step limits!

Training and Perfecting Your Team

With the Pokédex nearing completion, you can now focus on building the ultimate team for competitive play (if you link with other players) or simply for bragging rights.

  • Level Grinding: The Elite Four is the most efficient place to level up your Pokémon. Alternatively, the Cerulean Cave offers high-level wild Pokémon.
  • Move Set Optimization: Experiment with different move sets for your Pokémon. Consider type coverage, status effects, and powerful STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) moves.
  • Stat Experience: While not as visible as EVs in later generations, defeating Pokémon contributes to "Stat Experience" in Gen 1, which boosts your Pokémon's stats. Repeatedly battling strong Pokémon like those in Cerulean Cave can help maximize your team's potential.

The Kanto Master

Once you've caught all 151 Pokémon and completed your Pokédex, return to Professor Oak's Lab in Pallet Town. He will congratulate you on your monumental achievement, solidifying your status as a true Pokémon Master!
