While not as complex as modern Pokémon games, Gen 1 still has hidden mechanics that can optimize your team. 'EVs' (Effort Values) are gained by defeating specific Pokémon and contribute to a Pokémon's stats. In Gen 1, all stats gain 'Stat Experience' (similar to EVs) up to a cap.

- Stat Experience: Every Pokémon you defeat gives Stat Experience to your active Pokémon based on the defeated Pokémon's base stats. For example, defeating a Geodude gives Stat Experience in Attack and Defense.
- Vitamins: Items like Protein, Iron, Carbos, Calcium, and HP Up directly add Stat Experience to a specific stat, up to a certain point (100 Stat Exp. per vitamin, max 25600 per stat).
- Optimal Training: To maximize a Pokémon's stats, focus on defeating Pokémon that give Stat Experience in the stats you want to boost (e.g., defeat many Abra/Kadabra for Special, Machop/Machoke for Attack).
For casual play, simply battling many trainers and wild Pokémon will naturally boost your stats. For competitive play or a perfect team, understanding Stat Experience is key.
