Game Modes: Story vs. Battle

Compare Story and Battle modes in Pokémon Colosseum. Follow Wes's adventure to dismantle Cipher and snag Shadow Pokémon in this unique region.

Pokémon Colosseum offers two primary modes of play: Story Mode and Battle Mode. Story Mode is the heart of the game, where you'll follow the narrative of Wes, a former Cipher operative turned hero, as he travels across Orre to dismantle Cipher's operations. This mode introduces you to the game's unique mechanics, including snagging Shadow Pokémon, purifying them, and engaging in challenging battles against various trainers and Cipher agents. Progressing through Story Mode unlocks new areas, characters, and the full depth of the game's plot.

Battle Mode provides a more competitive and straightforward Pokémon battling experience. Here, you can engage in friendly matches against other players (if you have a second GameCube and game) or practice your skills against AI opponents. Battle Mode allows you to use Pokémon you've collected and purified in Story Mode, or to create teams from scratch using pre-set options. It's an excellent way to hone your battling strategies and experiment with different team compositions without the constraints of the narrative. For newcomers, starting with Story Mode is essential to grasp the game's unique mechanics before diving into the competitive aspects of Battle Mode.
