Shadow Pokémon are a unique and disturbing concept introduced in Pokémon Colosseum, representing a dark perversion of the natural Pokémon world. These are not naturally occurring creatures but rather Pokémon whose hearts have been artificially "darkened" by the Cipher organization. This process amplifies their power, making them more aggressive and potent in battle, but it also instills in them a deep sense of suffering and rage. The "Shadow" state is characterized by a distinct aura and a unique move called "Shadow Rush," which deals massive damage but also causes recoil to the user.

The lore surrounding Shadow Pokémon is deeply tied to the narrative of Cipher's control and the player's mission of liberation. Cipher uses these corrupted creatures as tools of intimidation and warfare, aiming to subjugate the Orre region. However, the darkening process is not irreversible. Through the act of "Snagging" these Pokémon and then engaging in various activities with them, such as battling and walking, their hearts can be "Purified." This purification process not only restores the Pokémon to its true, benevolent nature but also unlocks its full potential and allows it to be used effectively by the player. The existence of Shadow Pokémon highlights the ethical dilemmas and the struggle between darkness and light within the game's world.
