Challenge Modes
Once you've completed the main story of Portal, a new set of challenges unlocks, offering a fresh way to test your portal-flinging prowess. These challenges revisit familiar test chambers with specific constraints, pushing you to optimize your solutions for efficiency, speed, or minimal portal usage. Mastering these modes requires a deep understanding of portal mechanics and creative problem-solving.
Advanced Chambers
The Advanced Chambers are redesigned versions of existing test chambers, featuring increased difficulty through added obstacles, modified layouts, and more complex puzzle elements. These aren't just harder versions; they often require entirely new strategies compared to their original counterparts.
- Test Chamber 13 (Advanced): This advanced version introduces additional laser fields and moving platforms. Your primary goal remains to activate the button, but the path is significantly more obstructed.
- Upon entering, notice the new laser grid blocking the direct path to the button.
- Look for a portal-able surface on the ceiling above the laser grid. Place a blue portal there.
- Next, locate a wall behind the initial platform you start on that is portal-able. Place an orange portal there.
- Walk through your orange portal to emerge above the laser grid.
- From this elevated position, you can now safely drop down to the platform with the button, avoiding the lasers.
- Be mindful of the moving platforms; time your drops carefully to avoid falling into the goo.
- Test Chamber 15 (Advanced): This chamber adds more turrets and introduces a new element: a weighted storage cube that needs to be transported across a gap with a moving platform.
- Immediately upon entering, identify the turrets. Prioritize neutralizing them by either knocking them over with portals or using a cube as a shield.
- Locate the Weighted Storage Cube. You'll need to get this cube onto the pressure plate on the far side of the chamber.
- Observe the moving platform. You'll need to use portals to place the cube onto this platform as it passes.
- Place a portal on a wall near the cube and another on a wall that the moving platform will pass by.
- Push the cube through your portal when the platform is in position.
- Once the cube is on the platform, use portals to redirect it to the pressure plate on the other side. You may need to place a portal on the ceiling above the pressure plate and another on a wall to drop the cube precisely.
Challenge Maps
Challenge Maps focus on specific metrics: least portals used, least time taken, or least steps taken. Each map has three distinct challenges, allowing you to replay and perfect your approach.
Least Portals
This challenge demands efficiency in portal placement. Every portal counts, so plan your shots meticulously.
- Test Chamber 08: The goal is to reach the exit using the fewest portals possible.
- Start by placing a portal on the wall directly opposite the exit door.
- Place your second portal on the floor directly beneath you.
- Fall through the floor portal, gaining momentum, and launch out of the wall portal towards the exit. This often allows you to clear the gap with just two portals.
- If you need to hit the button first, consider placing a portal on the wall near the button, and another on the floor to launch yourself to it, then quickly reposition your exit portal for the final jump.
- Test Chamber 11: This chamber involves navigating around a large pit and activating a button.
- From your starting position, place a portal on the wall directly across the pit, near the button.
- Place your second portal on a wall near your starting position.
- Walk through your second portal to reach the button.
- Once the button is activated, the platform will extend. You can then use the same two portals (or reposition one if necessary) to cross to the exit. The key is to use the initial portal placement to both activate the button and traverse the gap.
Least Time
Speed is paramount here. Optimize your movements and portal placements for the quickest possible completion.
- Test Chamber 05: This chamber requires quick movement and precise portal shots to activate a button and reach the exit.
- As soon as the chamber starts, immediately place a portal on the wall opposite the button.
- Place your second portal on the floor near your starting position.
- Jump into your floor portal to launch yourself towards the button.
- As you're flying towards the button, quickly place a new portal on the wall near the exit door.
- Once you hit the button, you should have enough momentum to continue through your newly placed exit portal, reaching the goal in record time.
- Test Chamber 18: This chamber involves using momentum to cross large gaps and avoid hazards.
- Identify the long drop-off point. Place a portal at the bottom of this drop.
- Place your second portal on a wall that will launch you towards the next platform or the exit.
- Jump into the initial drop portal to gain maximum momentum.
- As you launch, quickly adjust your aim for subsequent portal placements if multiple jumps are required. The goal is to create a continuous flow of momentum.
- Practice the timing of your jumps and portal placements to minimize any pauses.
Least Steps
This challenge emphasizes minimal physical movement. Think outside the box and use portals to cover distances without walking.
- Test Chamber 09: This chamber often requires significant walking to retrieve a cube.
- Instead of walking to the cube, place a portal on a wall near the cube's location.
- Place your second portal on a wall near your starting position.
- Walk through your second portal to instantly appear next to the cube.
- Grab the Weighted Storage Cube.
- Place a portal on the wall near the pressure plate and another near your current position.
- Walk through your portal, carrying the cube, to quickly place it on the plate.
- Finally, use portals to reach the exit without taking unnecessary steps.
- Test Chamber 16: This chamber features multiple platforms and a turret to bypass.
- Immediately place a portal on the wall behind the turret.
- Place your second portal on a wall near your starting position and walk through it to appear behind the turret.
- Knock over the turret.
- From this new position, identify the next platform or objective. Use portals to bridge the gap without walking across. For example, place a portal on the wall of the next platform and another near you, then walk through.
- Repeat this process, using portals to teleport between objectives and the exit, minimizing any ground covered by foot.
