Game Modes
Rayman Origins offers a vibrant and engaging experience across several distinct game modes, each providing unique challenges and opportunities for fun. Understanding these modes is key to mastering the Glade of Dreams and rescuing the Electoons. Here's a detailed breakdown to help you navigate your adventure.
Story Mode (Adventure)
This is the main campaign where Rayman and his friends embark on their quest to save the Glade of Dreams from the Darktoons. Each world is divided into multiple levels, culminating in a boss fight. Progressing through Story Mode unlocks new abilities, characters, and access to other game modes.
- Objective: Collect Electoons by reaching the end of levels, freeing captured Electoons, and gathering enough Lums. The ultimate goal is to accumulate 240 Electoons to achieve 100% completion.
- Electoon Collection Strategy: Each standard Story Mode level offers a total of 10 Electoons to collect. Here's how they are distributed:
- Level Completion: Successfully finishing a level for the first time automatically grants you 1 Electoon.
- Lum Thresholds: Collecting Lums is crucial! In most standard levels, you can earn 3 Electoons by reaching specific Lum counts:
- 150 Lums: Awards 1 Electoon.
- 300 Lums: Awards 1 Electoon.
- 450 Lums: Awards the final 1 Electoon for Lum collection.
- Caged Electoons: There are usually two hidden cages in each level, often requiring keen observation, solving a small environmental puzzle, or exploring off the main path. Listen carefully for their distinct cries! Punching the cage frees the Electoons inside, awarding 1 Electoon per cage.
- Time Attack Electoons: After completing a level, you can replay it in Time Attack mode. Beating the developer's target time for that level awards an additional 3 Electoons. This means you must master each level's layout and mechanics to earn all 10 Electoons available.
- Character Unlocks: As you progress and free more Electoons, new playable characters like Globox, Teensies, and their various costumes become available at the Snoring Tree. Each character has cosmetic differences but plays identically.
- World Progression: Worlds are unlocked sequentially. You'll need a certain number of Electoons to open new areas on the world map. Don't be afraid to replay earlier levels to gather more Lums and Electoons if you're stuck! The game clearly indicates how many Electoons are required for the next world.
Treasure Chest Levels (Chase Levels)
These exhilarating levels are unlocked by collecting enough Electoons within a specific world. They are fast-paced, auto-scrolling challenges where you chase a runaway Treasure Chest through a perilous environment.
- Objective: Catch the Treasure Chest before it escapes at the end of the level. There are 10 such levels in total, one for each world (including the final world before the Land of the Livid Dead).
- Strategy:
- Maintain Momentum: These levels demand constant movement. Utilize your running, sliding, and flying abilities to keep up with the chest. Hesitation means failure.
- Anticipate Obstacles: The path is often filled with traps, enemies, and environmental hazards. Learn the patterns and timing for jumps and attacks. Many sections require precise platforming.
- Wall Jumps & Gliding: Master these techniques, as they are crucial for navigating complex vertical sections and maintaining speed across gaps.
- Lums and Electoons: While Lums are present in these levels and contribute to your overall Lum count, there are no specific Lum thresholds for Electoon awards within Treasure Chest levels. However, successfully completing a Treasure Chest level awards 3 Electoons, regardless of Lum collection.
- Reward: Successfully catching the Treasure Chest rewards you with a Skull Tooth. Collecting all 10 Skull Teeth is a vital step for unlocking the Land of the Livid Dead.
Land of the Livid Dead
This is the ultimate challenge for completionists! The Land of the Livid Dead is a secret world accessible only after collecting all 10 Skull Teeth from the Treasure Chest Levels.
- Objective: Complete the incredibly difficult levels within this world. There are 5 levels in total, each designed to push your platforming skills to their absolute limit.
- Access: Once you have all 10 Skull Teeth, return to the Snoring Tree. The entrance to the Land of the Livid Dead will be revealed on the world map.
- Difficulty: Expect extremely challenging platforming, precise timing, and unforgiving enemy placements. These levels are designed to test every skill you've acquired throughout the game, often combining elements from previous worlds in new, punishing ways. One hit usually means instant death.
- Electoon Awards: Each level in the Land of the Livid Dead awards 3 Electoons upon completion, bringing the total Electoons from this world to 15.
- Reward: Conquering the Land of the Livid Dead is a testament to your mastery of Rayman Origins and often unlocks special achievements or trophies. It's the final hurdle for true 100% completion.
Time Attack (Speed Runs)
After completing a Story Mode level for the first time, you can replay it in Time Attack mode. Your goal is to beat a predetermined "target time" set by the developers.
- Objective: Finish the level as quickly as possible, ideally beating the target time.
- Access: Select any previously completed Story Mode level from the world map, and you'll be given the option to play it in Time Attack mode.
- Strategy:
- Memorize Layouts: Knowing the level layout, enemy placements, and optimal paths is crucial. Practice makes perfect.
- Minimize Pauses: Avoid stopping unless absolutely necessary. Keep moving! Every second counts.
- Efficient Attacks: Use your attacks to clear paths quickly, but don't get bogged down in unnecessary combat. Sometimes it's faster to avoid enemies entirely.
- Utilize Abilities: Master the slide, dive, and flying punch to gain speed and bypass obstacles. The dive attack (down + attack) is particularly useful for quickly dropping through platforms or gaining momentum.
- Ghost Runner: The game often shows a "ghost" of your best time or the target time, allowing you to visually track your progress and identify areas for improvement.
- Rewards: Beating the target time for a Story Mode level awards 3 Electoons. These are essential for reaching the total of 240 Electoons for 100% completion. There are 60 Story Mode levels, meaning 180 Electoons are available through Time Attack alone.
Co-op Multiplayer
Rayman Origins truly shines in its local co-op mode, supporting up to four players simultaneously. This mode is integrated directly into the Story Mode, allowing friends to jump in and out at any time.
- Players: 1-4 players locally. (Note: Online multiplayer is not available for Rayman Origins.)
- Characters: Each player can choose from the unlocked characters. All characters have identical abilities, so choose your favorite!
- Gameplay: All players share the same screen and progress through the Story Mode levels together. The camera dynamically adjusts to keep all players in view. If players get too far apart, the one lagging behind will be automatically bubbled and brought forward.
- Co-op Specifics:
- Bubble System: If a player takes damage, falls into a pit, or gets left behind, they turn into a bubble. Another player can pop the bubble (by jumping on it or attacking it) to revive them. If all active players are bubbled simultaneously, you lose a life. This system makes the game more forgiving for less experienced players.
- Teamwork: While not strictly required for most levels, some areas are easier with multiple players, allowing for strategic enemy clearing, reaching otherwise inaccessible Lums (e.g., one player stands on a switch while another grabs Lums), or simply having more bodies to absorb hits.
- Friendly Fire: While you can't directly "kill" other players, you can accidentally bubble them with your attacks or by knocking them into hazards. This often leads to chaotic and hilarious moments, adding a unique layer of interaction to the gameplay.
- Lum Collection: Lums collected by any player contribute to the team's total. This can make reaching Lum thresholds for Electoons significantly easier.
- Benefits: Co-op makes collecting Lums and Electoons more manageable, as You can cover more ground and revive each other. It's also a fantastic way to experience the game's humor and vibrant world with friends or family, offering a different dynamic than solo play.
