Unlike traditional RPGs, Rayman Origins doesn't feature equipable items. Instead, your character's capabilities expand as you rescue the Nymphs, who grant you new, permanent abilities. These abilities are fundamental to progression, allowing you to access new areas and overcome previously impassable obstacles. Mastering each ability is crucial for 100% completion.

List of Core Abilities:
- Punch/Kick: Your basic attack. Available from the start. Used to defeat enemies and break certain objects.
- Jump: Your fundamental movement ability. Available from the start.
- Hair-Copter (Glide): Unlocked early in the game. Allows you to slow your descent and cross longer gaps by holding the jump button in mid-air. Essential for most platforming.
- Wall Jump: Unlocked by a Nymph. Allows you to jump off walls to reach higher platforms or scale vertical shafts.
- Ground Pound (Slam): Unlocked by a Nymph. Performed by pressing down and jump in mid-air. Used to break certain platforms, stun enemies, or activate switches.
- Dive/Swim: Unlocked by a Nymph. Grants the ability to swim underwater and perform underwater attacks. Necessary for aquatic levels.
- Run: Unlocked by a Nymph. Allows you to sprint by holding a specific button, increasing your movement speed. Crucial for speed levels and escaping hazards.
How Abilities are Unlocked:
Each core ability is granted by a specific Nymph after you rescue her from a cage. Nymphs are typically found at the end of a world's 'boss' level or a particularly challenging stage. Once a Nymph is rescued, she will bestow her power upon you, and the ability will be permanently available for all characters.
