Social Features & Etiquette

Rec Room is a vibrant social space, and mastering its social features is key to unlocking the full experience. From making new friends to navigating public rooms, understanding these mechanics and adhering to good etiquette will enhance your adventures.

Making Connections

Building your network in Rec Room opens up opportunities for cooperative play, private room access, and shared creative projects. Here's how to effectively connect with other players:

  • Sending Friend Requests:
    1. Approach You you wish to befriend.
    2. Open your Watch Menu (typically by pressing the menu button on your controller or tapping your wrist).
    3. Navigate to the "People" tab.
    4. Select the player's profile from the nearby list.
    5. Tap the "Add Friend" button. They will receive a notification and can accept or decline your request.
  • Accepting Friend Requests:
    1. When you receive a friend request, a notification will appear on your Watch Menu.
    2. Open your Watch Menu and go to the "Notifications" tab.
    3. Locate the friend request and tap "Accept" to add them to your friends list.
  • Using the "Party Up" Feature:

If you're enjoying a game with a group and want to stick together, the "Party Up" feature is invaluable.

    1. While in a room, open your Watch Menu.
    2. Go to the "People" tab.
    3. Select "Party Up" from the options.
    4. You can then invite nearby players or friends to form a party. Party members can easily join each other's rooms.

Communication & Interaction

Effective communication is the cornerstone of a positive social experience in Rec Room. Be mindful of your interactions to foster a welcoming environment.

  • Voice Chat:
    • Push-to-Talk (Optional): For players who prefer more control over their microphone, enable Push-to-Talk in your Watch Menu settings under "Audio." This prevents accidental background noise from being broadcast.
    • Volume Control: If a player is too loud or too quiet, you can adjust their individual volume. Open your Watch Menu, go to "People," select their profile, and use the volume slider.
    • Muting Players: If a player is being disruptive or you simply prefer not to hear them, you can mute them. From their profile in the "People" tab, select "Mute." This is a client-side mute and does not affect other players.
  • Gestures & Emotes:

Rec Room offers several non-verbal communication options:

    • Hand Gestures: Use your hands to wave, point, or give a thumbs-up. These are intuitive and often understood across language barriers.
    • Emote Wheel: Access the emote wheel (usually by holding a specific button on your controller) to perform pre-set animations like clapping, dancing, or bowing. These are excellent for expressing enthusiasm or appreciation.

Rec Room Etiquette

To ensure a fun and respectful environment for everyone, adhere to these guidelines:

  • Be Respectful: Treat all players with kindness, regardless of their skill level, age, or background. Harassment, bullying, or discriminatory language is strictly prohibited and can lead to account suspension.
  • Avoid "Griefing": Do not intentionally disrupt other players' experiences. This includes blocking pathways, destroying creations in public rooms (unless explicitly allowed), or repeatedly teleporting into personal space.
  • Mind Your Personal Space: While Rec Room is virtual, players often appreciate personal space. Avoid standing too close to others, especially when they are engaged in conversation or an activity.
  • Report Misconduct: If you encounter a player violating the Code of Conduct, use the in-game reporting tools.
    1. Open your Watch Menu.
    2. Go to the "People" tab.
    3. Select the offending player's profile.
    4. Tap "Report" and follow the prompts to specify the reason for your report. Providing details helps the moderation team.
  • Room Rules: Always pay attention to any specific rules posted in a custom room. Many creators have guidelines for their spaces, and respecting these ensures a positive experience for everyone present.
  • Sharing Creations: If you're in a creative room, always ask permission before modifying or taking inspiration from another player's creation. Collaboration is encouraged, but respect for intellectual property is paramount.
