The East Wing & Sword Key
Having secured the Shield Key and dealt with the immediate threats in the Main Hall's accessible areas, your next objective is to delve deeper into the mansion's East Wing to acquire the crucial Sword Key. This key is essential for unlocking further progression and uncovering more of the mansion's secrets.
Navigating to the East Wing Balcony
- Return to the Main Hall: From wherever you are, make your way back to the grand, central Main Hall.
- Ascend the Grand Staircase: Head up the large staircase to the second floor.
- Proceed to the East Balcony: At the top of the stairs, turn left. This will lead you to the eastern balcony overlooking the Main Hall.
- Unlock the East Wing Door: Locate the door at the very end of this eastern balcony. This door requires the Shield Key to unlock.
- Action: Use the Shield Key on this door.
- Note: The previous guide incorrectly mentioned the Armor Key here. The Shield Key is the correct key for this specific door in the 1996 progression.
Exploring the East Wing Corridor
Once through the Shield Key door, you'll enter a new corridor in the East Wing.
- Immediate Threat: Be prepared for a single Zombie that often patrols this hallway. It's advisable to dispatch it immediately to ensure safe passage.
- Path Ahead: Follow this corridor. There are no immediate branching paths, so continue straight until you reach the next accessible door.
The Piano Room and the Sword Key
The door at the end of the East Wing corridor leads directly into a distinctive room, often referred to as the "Piano Room" due to its prominent feature.
- Enter the Piano Room: Proceed through the door.
- Locate the Piano: Immediately to your right upon entering, you'll see a grand piano. This piano plays a significant role later in the game for a puzzle, but for now, it's just a landmark.
- Acquire the Sword Key: The Sword Key is not hidden. It rests plainly on a small, ornate table positioned near the piano.
- Action: Approach the table and collect the Sword Key.
- Item: Sword Key (Key Item)
- Purpose: Unlocks several doors marked with a sword emblem throughout the mansion, granting access to new areas.
- Ink Ribbon Location: In the 1996 version of Resident Evil, the Ink Ribbon in this room is typically found on the small table next to the Sword Key, or sometimes on the piano itself, not in the fireplace. The fireplace in this room is purely decorative.
- Action: Check the table thoroughly for the Ink Ribbon.
- Item: Ink Ribbon x2 (Consumable)
- Purpose: Allows you to save your game at a Typewriter. Always collect these!
Post-Key Encounter
As is common in Resident Evil, picking up a key item often triggers an event or enemy appearance.
- Return to the Corridor: As you exit the Piano Room back into the East Wing corridor, be prepared.
- New Threat: A Zombie will typically spawn or be waiting in the corridor, often near the entrance to the Piano Room.
- Strategy: Have your weapon ready. A few well-placed handgun shots or a shotgun blast will quickly neutralize this threat. Conserve ammo if possible, but don't take unnecessary damage.
