Securing Your First Weapon
Welcome, S.T.A.R.S. operative! As you step into the Spencer Mansion, your survival hinges on acquiring reliable firepower. This section will guide you through obtaining your initial defensive tools, focusing specifically on Jill Valentine's scenario in the original Resident Evil (1996). Chris Redfield's weapon acquisition path differs significantly, as he starts with only a Combat Knife and relies on finding his Beretta M92F much later.
Jill's Starting Arsenal & First Firearms
Upon beginning your nightmare as Jill Valentine, you are equipped with the following:
- Beretta M92F (Handgun): Your primary firearm. While not incredibly powerful, its generous ammunition supply makes it essential for dispatching weaker enemies and conserving more potent rounds.
- Combat Knife: A last resort. Highly ineffective against most enemies, it's best reserved for breaking open crates or dealing with downed zombies if you're completely out of ammo.
- Handgun Ammo (30 rounds): Stored in your inventory, ready for your Beretta.
Your immediate goal is to familiarize yourself with the mansion's layout and locate additional resources. Your first significant firearm upgrade will be the Shotgun, but it requires a bit of exploration and puzzle-solving.
Obtaining the Shotgun (Jill's Scenario)
The Shotgun is a crucial early-game weapon, offering significant stopping power against tougher enemies and groups. Unlike the incorrect information previously provided, it is NOT found in the Dining Room fireplace. That location holds the Emblem, a key puzzle item. The Shotgun for Jill is located on the second floor of the West Wing, within a specific room that requires a bit of maneuvering.
- From the Main Hall: After the initial cutscene with Wesker and Barry, and the discovery of Kenneth's body, you'll find yourself in the Main Hall.
-
Accessing the West Wing:
- Head through the double doors on the west side (left on your map) of the Main Hall. This leads to the Dining Room.
- Proceed through the Dining Room, ignoring the fireplace for now. Exit through the door on the north side of the Dining Room.
- You will now be in a short corridor. Turn left and proceed through the next door, entering the West Corridor (1F).
- Be wary of a zombie that may be patrolling this corridor. Use your Beretta to dispatch it or carefully maneuver around it to conserve ammo.
-
Reaching the Shotgun Room (2F):
- Continue down the West Corridor (1F) until you reach the stairs leading to the second floor. Ascend these stairs.
- You are now on the West Corridor (2F). Be cautious, as there might be another zombie or two patrolling this area.
- Proceed south along the West Corridor (2F). The first door you encounter on your left (east side of the corridor) leads to the Shotgun Room.
-
The Shotgun Puzzle:
- Upon entering the Shotgun Room, you will immediately spot the Shotgun mounted on the wall.
- Attempt to take it. A mechanism will trigger, causing the ceiling to begin descending, threatening to crush you!
- Immediate Action Required: To prevent being crushed, you need to quickly find a substitute weight. Look around the room for the Broken Shotgun (it's usually on a shelf or a small table nearby).
- Swap the Weapons: Go back to the mounted Shotgun, and when prompted, select the Broken Shotgun from your inventory to place it on the mount. This will trick the mechanism, stopping the ceiling and allowing you to safely retrieve the functional Shotgun.
-
Ammunition & Aftermath:
- Once you have the Shotgun, check the immediate vicinity for Shotgun Shells. There are usually a few boxes scattered in the room or nearby corridors.
- Equip the Shotgun: Open your inventory and equip your new Shotgun. Its stopping power is invaluable.
- Be Prepared: Exiting the Shotgun Room and returning to the West Corridor (2F) might trigger new enemy spawns or reposition existing ones. Always be ready for a fight.
Shotgun Statistics & Usage Tips
The Shotgun is a game-changer for Jill's early survival. Here's what you need to know:
| Weapon | Damage Output | Effective Range | Ammo Type | Best Use Cases |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shotgun | High (spread) | Short to Medium | Shotgun Shells |
|
| Beretta M92F | Low to Medium | Medium to Long | Handgun Ammo |
|
Strategy Tips:
- Ammo Conservation: Shotgun Shells are far rarer than Handgun Ammo. Use your Shotgun judiciously. Don't waste shells on single, easily avoidable zombies unless absolutely necessary.
- Close Quarters: The Shotgun is most effective at close range due to its spread. Get in close for maximum damage, but be mindful of enemy attacks.
- Headshots: Aim for the head! A well-placed Shotgun blast to a zombie's head can often dismember or instantly kill it, saving precious follow-up shots.
- Staggering: Even if a Shotgun blast doesn't kill an enemy, it will often stagger them, giving you a precious moment to reposition or reload.
Common Pitfalls & Missables
- Forgetting the Broken Shotgun: Many new players, in their panic, grab the Shotgun and forget to replace it with the Broken Shotgun, leading to a swift and crushing death. Always remember the swap!
- Wasting Ammo: The biggest mistake new players make is using their most powerful weapons on every enemy. Learn to differentiate between threats that require the Shotgun and those that can be handled with the Beretta or even avoided.
- Ignoring Inventory Management: The Shotgun and its shells take up valuable inventory slots. Always be thinking about what you need to carry and what can be stored in an Item Box.
With the Shotgun in hand, Jill is now much better equipped to face the horrors within the Spencer Mansion. Good luck, and stay vigilant!
