General Tips for Survival
Welcome, S.T.A.R.S. operative. The Spencer Mansion is a labyrinth of horrors, and survival requires more than just a steady trigger finger. This section will equip you with essential strategies to navigate its treacherous halls and conserve your precious resources.
Resource Management: Every Bullet Counts
Unlike modern titles, ammunition and healing items are scarce in Resident Evil. Treat every item as if it's the last you'll find.
- Ammunition Conservation:
- Know Your Enemy: Not every zombie needs to be put down. If you can safely run past an enemy without taking damage, do so. This is especially true for zombies in wide corridors or rooms you won't revisit frequently.
- Headshots are Key: For standard zombies, aim for the head. A well-placed shot from your Handgun can often down a zombie in 1-3 hits, saving valuable ammo compared to body shots.
- Melee Advantage (Jill Only): Jill's Knife, while weak, can be used to finish off downed enemies or to deal with single, slow-moving zombies if you're confident in your dodging. Chris does not have a knife.
- Shotgun Strategy: Reserve the Shotgun for groups of enemies, Hunters, or Cerberus. Its wide spread makes it effective against multiple targets. Try to line up enemies to hit several at once.
- Magnum/Grenade Launcher: These are your heavy hitters. Save them for bosses or particularly dangerous encounters. Do not waste Magnum rounds on standard zombies.
- Healing Item Management:
- Herbs:
- Green Herbs: Restore a small amount of health. Combine two Green Herbs for a moderate heal, or three for a full recovery.
- Red Herbs: Have no effect on their own. Combine with a Green Herb for a full heal. Combine with two Green Herbs for a full heal and a temporary defense boost.
- Blue Herbs: Cure poison. Always carry at least one if you anticipate encountering poisonous enemies (e.g., Wasps, Plant 42).
- First Aid Sprays: These provide a full heal instantly. They are rare and should be saved for critical situations, especially before boss fights or when you are in a dangerous area with no immediate access to a safe room.
- Don't Overheal: If you're only slightly injured (Fine or Caution), consider saving your healing items. You'll likely take more damage later.
- Herbs:
Exploration and Navigation
The Mansion is designed to disorient you. Pay attention to your surroundings.
- Map Usage: The map is your best friend. Press the appropriate button (typically Select) to bring it up. It shows your current location, unlocked doors, and areas you've visited. Pay attention to the color coding of doors – red usually means locked, green means unlocked.
- Check Everything: Interact with every object that prompts you. You might find hidden items, crucial documents, or puzzle clues. Examine items in your inventory for hidden details or uses (e.g., the "Book of Curse" or the "Death Mask").
- Safe Rooms and Item Boxes:
- Ink Ribbons: These are required to save your game at Typewriters. They are limited, so save strategically. Prioritize saving after solving major puzzles, defeating difficult enemies, or before entering a new, unknown area.
- Item Boxes: These magical boxes are linked across all safe rooms. Deposit items you don't immediately need to free up inventory space. This is crucial for carrying puzzle items or multiple weapons.
- Recognizing Safe Rooms: Safe rooms are typically marked by a Typewriter and an Item Box. They are also the only places where you are truly safe from enemy attacks.
- Backtracking: Expect to backtrack frequently. Areas that were previously inaccessible will open up as you find keys and solve puzzles. Don't be afraid to revisit old rooms.
Combat Tactics
Engaging enemies effectively can save your life and your resources.
- The "Dance": Many enemies, especially zombies, can be outmaneuvered. Learn their attack patterns and movement speed. Often, you can bait an attack, step back, and then run past them without taking damage.
- Door Tactics: When entering or exiting a room, you are briefly invulnerable. Use this to your advantage. If a zombie is right outside a door, open it, step in, and then immediately step back out to potentially avoid damage or get a free shot.
- Environmental Hazards: Be aware of your surroundings. Some areas have environmental dangers (e.g., falling chandeliers, collapsing ceilings). Use these to your advantage if possible, or avoid them.
- Know When to Run: Sometimes, the best strategy is to simply run. If you're low on health or ammo, or facing an enemy you're not equipped to handle, don't be a hero. Live to fight another day.
Character Specific Tips
Both Jill and Chris have unique advantages and disadvantages.
- Jill Valentine:
- More Inventory Slots: Jill has 8 inventory slots, allowing her to carry more items. This makes resource management slightly easier.
- Lockpick: Jill starts with a Lockpick, which can open certain simple locks without needing a key. This can save time and open up shortcuts.
- Barry Burton's Assistance: Barry often appears to provide assistance, including ammunition or even saving you from certain death.
- Chris Redfield:
- Fewer Inventory Slots: Chris only has 6 inventory slots, making careful planning and frequent trips to the Item Box essential.
- Higher Defense: Chris can take more damage than Jill before entering critical health.
- Rebecca Chambers' Assistance: Rebecca can provide healing in certain situations, and her presence can unlock specific story paths.
By internalizing these tips, you'll be better prepared to face the horrors within the Spencer Mansion and uncover its dark secrets. Good luck, S.T.A.R.S.!
