Laboratory Exploration
Welcome to the Umbrella Laboratory, a sprawling and dangerous complex beneath Raccoon City. This section will guide you through its various areas, helping you navigate the threats and secure crucial items, with specific considerations for both Leon S. Kennedy's and Claire Redfield's scenarios.
Initial Access: Restoring Power to the Main Lab
Upon entering the main lab area, your immediate goal is to restore power to the facility to gain access to deeper sections. The method for this differs slightly between characters.
Leon's Scenario: Power Panel Fuses
- Starting Point: You'll begin in the Main Shaft area, accessible after using the Main Fuse from the Cable Car.
- Power Panel Room: Head to the Power Panel Room (often marked as "P.P. Room" on the map). This room is usually located to the west of the Main Shaft.
- Fuse Acquisition: Inside the Power Panel Room, you'll find a panel requiring two specific fuses.
- First Fuse (Red): This fuse is typically found in the Storage Room adjacent to the Power Panel Room. Be wary of a few lurking Zombies.
- Second Fuse (Blue): The blue fuse is located in the P4 Laboratory, which you'll access later. For now, focus on activating the main power.
- Activating Power: Insert the red fuse into the Power Panel. This will restore partial power, allowing access to certain doors and the Main Shaft elevator.
Claire's Scenario: Power Cable and Fuse
- Starting Point: Similar to Leon, Claire will enter the lab via the Cable Car, having used the Main Fuse.
- Power Room: Navigate to the Power Room, usually located in the western section of the Main Shaft area.
- Power Cable Puzzle: Inside the Power Room, you'll find a console with a missing power cable.
- Cable Location: The Power Cable is typically found in the Storage Room connected to the Power Room, often guarded by a Zombie or Licker.
- Fuse Location: After inserting the Power Cable, you'll need a Fuse for the main panel. This fuse is usually found in the same Storage Room or a small adjacent office.
- Activating Power: Insert the fuse into the panel after connecting the cable. This restores power to the main lab areas.
P4 Laboratory and MO Discs
The P4 Laboratory is a critical area for progression, housing key items and terminals. Accessing it requires a specific key card, and further progression within often involves MO Discs.
Accessing the P4 Lab
- Key Card Acquisition (Leon): After restoring initial power, head to the Security Room (often near the Main Shaft). Inside, you'll find the Lab Card Key on a desk or console.
- Key Card Acquisition (Claire): Claire typically finds her Lab Card Key in the Main Office or a similar administrative area in the western part of the lab, after activating the initial power.
- P4 Lab Entrance: Use the Lab Card Key to open the locked door leading to the P4 Laboratory.
- Enemies: Expect to encounter Lickers in the P4 Lab corridors. These creatures are fast and can deal significant damage. Use your shotgun or grenade launcher for a quick dispatch, or try to run past them if your health is low.
MO Disc Usage and Computer Access
MO Discs are crucial for unlocking specific doors or accessing data within the P4 Lab. They are not directly used for computer passwords but rather as keys for specific terminals.
- MO Disc Locations:
- MO Disc 1 (Leon & Claire): Often found in the P4 Lab's main office area, on a desk or shelf.
- MO Disc 2 (Leon & Claire): Typically located in the Research Lab or a similar scientific area, accessible after using the first MO Disc.
- Computer Terminal (P4 Lab): You'll find a computer terminal in the P4 Lab that requires a password.
- Password Location: The computer password is NOT on an MO Disc. It's usually found on a memo or file located on a desk or shelf within the P4 Lab's main office or a connected storage room. Read all documents carefully!
- Purpose: Inputting the correct password will often unlock a specific door or activate a mechanism, such as the elevator to the lower levels.
- MO Disc Terminals: Locate the specific terminals that accept MO Discs. Inserting an MO Disc will typically unlock a door to a new section of the lab, such as the Research Lab or the G-Virus containment area.
The G-Virus Sample: Acquisition and Challenges
Obtaining the G-Virus Sample is a primary objective in the laboratory, but the method and location vary significantly by scenario and character.
Leon's Scenario: P4 Laboratory & William Birkin
- G-Virus Location: Leon acquires the G-Virus Sample directly from a defeated William Birkin.
- Boss Fight Trigger: After solving the MO Disc puzzles and accessing the deeper sections of the P4 Lab, you will typically encounter William Birkin (G-Form 3 or 4) in the P4 Lab's main research area or a connected platform.
- Strategy for William Birkin:
- Weak Points: Aim for the large eye on his shoulder/body.
- Recommended Weapons: Magnum, Shotgun, Grenade Launcher (Flame or Acid Rounds).
- Tactics: Keep your distance, dodge his sweeping attacks, and unload your most powerful ammunition into his eye. He has several phases, becoming more aggressive and mutated.
- Sample Retrieval: Once William is defeated, the G-Virus Sample will be left behind on the ground. Collect it immediately.
Claire's Scenario: Research Lab & G-Virus Containment
- G-Virus Location: Claire typically obtains the G-Virus Sample from a specialized containment unit in the Research Lab.
- Accessing Containment: After using the MO Discs to gain access to the Research Lab, you'll need to solve a small puzzle involving a console to release the G-Virus from its secure container.
- Encounter: Be prepared for a confrontation with a mutated creature, often a G-Adult or a similar bio-organic weapon, immediately after retrieving the sample.
- Strategy for G-Adult: These creatures are slow but deal heavy damage. Aim for the mouth or exposed weak points. Flame Rounds from the Grenade Launcher are highly effective.
- Sample Retrieval: Once the threat is neutralized, collect the G-Virus Sample from the containment unit.
Laboratory Exit and Final Preparations
With the G-Virus Sample in hand, your objective shifts to escaping the laboratory. Ensure you are well-equipped for the final encounters.
- Return Route: Retrace your steps back towards the main laboratory entrance, or find an alternative exit path that has now become accessible due to restored power or activated mechanisms (e.g., a newly opened elevator).
- Inventory Check: Before leaving the lab, make sure you have ample healing items (First Aid Sprays, Herbs) and ammunition for your strongest weapons. The final stretch of the game will test your combat skills. Consider combining herbs for maximum healing.
- Final Boss Preparation: The laboratory exit often leads directly into the final confrontation. Consider saving your game at the nearest typewriter if available. Ensure you have your most powerful weapons equipped and ready.
- Common Pitfalls:
- Resource Management: The lab is resource-intensive. Don't waste precious ammo on every zombie. Learn to dodge or use your knife when appropriate.
- Licker Ambushes: Lickers often drop from ceilings or burst through windows. Listen for their distinctive sounds and be ready to react.
- Missable Items: Thoroughly search every room. Key cards, MO Discs, and important memos are often tucked away on desks, shelves, or in lockers.
