The RPD Library, a grand yet decaying repository of knowledge on the second floor, holds a pivotal puzzle for both Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. This section will guide you through accessing the Library, solving its unique bookshelf puzzle, and securing the crucial items needed for your escape.

Accessing the Library

The Library is located on the 2F of the Raccoon Police Department. Unlike some later areas, its initial access is relatively straightforward and does not require the Blue Key Card. Instead, you'll typically gain entry much earlier in your playthrough:

• From the Main Hall (2F): Ascend the grand staircase in the Main Hall to the second floor. Head west through the double doors. This leads to a corridor. Follow this corridor, which turns into an "L"-shape, then a "U"-shape. The Library is one of the rooms accessible from this "U"-shaped corridor.
• Key Requirement: For Leon, the Library is often one of the first areas unlocked using the Spade Key, found in the Art Room (2F). For Claire, the Spade Key is also used, often found in the East Office (1F) or the Art Room (2F) depending on the scenario.
• Important Note on Blue Key Card: The Blue Key Card (or Club Key for Leon) is not used to access the Library. It is used on the computer terminal in the Operations Room (1F) to unlock specific doors, typically much later in the game. The Library is accessible well before this point.

Upon entering the Library, be prepared for potential zombie encounters. It's often wise to clear the immediate area before attempting the puzzle to avoid interruptions.

The Bookshelf Puzzle: Creating a Path

The core of the Library puzzle involves manipulating a series of heavy bookshelves to create a path to the upper level. While the general principle is the same for both characters, the exact pushes can vary slightly depending on your starting position and the scenario. The goal is to push three specific bookshelves into alignment, forming a bridge across the gap.

General Strategy for Bookshelf Pushes:

1. Initial Assessment: As you enter the Library, observe the large gap in the floor on the western side. Your goal is to create a path across this gap using the movable bookshelves.
2. Locate the First Movable Shelf: Head towards the western side of the Library. You'll find a bookshelf positioned near the edge of the gap. This is typically the first shelf you need to push.
3. Push Sequence:
   • Push 1: Locate the bookshelf closest to the gap on the lower level. Push it forward (westward) once. This will move it into the gap.
   • Push 2: Move around to the other side of the bookshelf you just pushed. You should now be able to push a second bookshelf, which is adjacent to the first. Push this one forward (westward) once. This will align it with the first, extending your bridge.
   • Push 3: Finally, move to the far end of the newly formed two-shelf bridge. There will be a third bookshelf that can be pushed. Push this one forward (westward) once to complete the bridge.
4. Confirmation: Once all three bookshelves are correctly pushed, they will form a continuous, sturdy path across the gap, allowing you to walk to the previously inaccessible western side of the Library.

Common Pitfall: Do not push the bookshelves too many times, or you might push them past the alignment point, requiring you to reset or push them back. Take your time and observe the path forming.

Reward: The Red Book and Statue's Left Arm

After successfully navigating the bookshelf puzzle and reaching the western side of the Library, you will find a ladder or stairs leading to the upper level. Ascend to the upper catwalk.

• On the Upper Level: Search the shelves and tables on this upper section. You will find the Red Book. This is a key puzzle item, not a consumable.
• Combining Items: The Red Book itself is not the final "Red Jewel." Instead, you must combine it with another item found elsewhere in the RPD: the Statue's Left Arm.
• Location of Statue's Left Arm: The Statue's Left Arm is typically found in the Waiting Room (2F), often on a table or display.
• The Final Item: Once you have both the Red Book and the Statue's Left Arm, open your inventory and combine them. This action will yield the Red Stone (sometimes referred to as the Red Jewel in older translations or fan communities). This Red Stone is one of the three colored stones required for the Goddess Statue puzzle in the Main Hall.

Important Distinction: The "Red Jewel" obtained from the Library puzzle in RE2 (1998) is specifically the Red Stone, formed by combining the Red Book and the Statue's Left Arm. This is different from other "Red Jewels" found in the game, such as the one Leon finds in the East Office fireplace or Claire finds in the Art Room, which are typically used for the Unicorn Medal puzzle.
