Zombie Strategies

Zombies are the most common enemy you'll encounter in Raccoon City, but underestimating them can lead to a quick demise. While seemingly slow, their numbers and ability to corner you make them a persistent threat. This section outlines effective strategies for dealing with these shambling horrors, whether you choose to conserve ammo or clear a path.

General Zombie Tactics

  • Headshots are Key: A well-placed shot to the head is the most efficient way to dispatch a zombie. For Leon, the Handgun (VP70) is your primary tool. For Claire, the Browning HP or the Grenade Launcher (with Flame Rounds) are excellent choices. Aim slightly upwards to increase your chances of a critical headshot.
  • Conserve Ammo: Early in the game, ammunition is scarce. Avoid engaging every zombie you see. Sometimes, simply running past them is the best option, especially in wider corridors.
  • Knockdown and Evade: If you're low on ammo or need to get past a group quickly, a few body shots can knock a zombie to the ground. While they are down, you can often run past them without taking damage. Be aware that they will eventually get back up.
  • Stairwell Strategy: Zombies struggle with stairs. If you're being pursued, leading them to a staircase and then descending (or ascending) can create a temporary safe zone, allowing you to reload or reposition.
  • Doorway Tactics: Narrow doorways can be both a blessing and a curse. You can funnel zombies into a single-file line, making them easier to pick off. However, if you get caught in a doorway, you risk being grabbed by multiple zombies.

Specific Encounter Strategies

Raccoon Police Department (RPD) - Main Hall & East/West Offices

The initial areas of the RPD are crawling with zombies. Your primary goal here is often to conserve resources while progressing.

  • Main Hall: The zombies here are primarily for atmosphere. You can generally run past them to the various doors. If you must engage, aim for headshots with your Handgun.
  • East Office (1F): This room often has several zombies. Consider knocking them down and running past, especially if you're just grabbing the Unicorn Medal. If you need to clear it for future backtracking, use careful headshots.
  • West Office (1F): Similar to the East Office. The zombie near the safe can be a nuisance. If you're going for the Shotgun (Leon) or Grenade Launcher (Claire), you'll likely need to deal with a few.
  • Dark Room (1F): The zombie here is easily avoidable. Just run past to access the save point.

Parking Garage & Kennel

These areas introduce more confined spaces, making evasion trickier.

  • Parking Garage (B1): The zombies here can be a pain due to the tight turns. Consider using a few Handgun rounds to knock them down if you need to access the Valve Handle or the Police Station Key (Red).
  • Kennel (B1): This area is often best avoided for direct combat with zombies if you can. Your primary goal is usually to get the Club Key. If zombies block your path, a quick knockdown and run is preferable to wasting precious ammo.

Sewers

The sewers often feature water, which can slow you down and make zombies harder to evade.

  • Waterways: When zombies are in water, they move slower, but so do you. Use this to your advantage by creating distance and then taking well-aimed shots. The Shotgun (Leon) or Grenade Launcher (Flame Rounds) (Claire) are excellent for clearing groups in these areas.
  • Upper Sewers: Be mindful of zombies dropping from ledges. Listen for their groans and be prepared to react quickly.

Advanced Zombie Tactics

  • Environmental Kills: While rare, some environments can be used to your advantage. For example, if a zombie is near an explosive barrel, a single shot to the barrel can clear the area.
  • Melee Counter (Leon Only): If a zombie grabs Leon, a well-timed press of the action button (usually 'X' or 'A') can sometimes result in a knife counter-attack, pushing the zombie away and saving you some health. This is not always reliable but can be a lifesaver.
  • Luring: Sometimes, you can lure zombies into a more favorable position. For instance, if a zombie is blocking a narrow path, you might run past it into a wider area, turn around, and then deal with it there.
