Character Specific Strategies (Carlos)
Carlos Oliveira's segments in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis offer a distinct change of pace and a different set of challenges compared to Jill's journey. As a U.B.C.S. mercenary, Carlos is generally more combat-proficient and starts with a superior arsenal, but his sections are often fraught with unique environmental hazards and a greater emphasis on resource management due to limited access to item boxes.
Hospital Exploration and Vaccine Synthesis
Carlos's primary objective is to retrieve the vaccine components within the Spencer Memorial Hospital. This area is teeming with zombies and the dreaded Hunter Gammas, which can be particularly dangerous in close quarters.
- Initial Arsenal: Carlos begins with the Assault Rifle (with a decent amount of ammo) and a Handgun. Prioritize using the Assault Rifle for groups of zombies or Hunter Gammas, as its rapid fire can quickly stagger or eliminate threats. Conserve Handgun ammo for single, isolated zombies or when you need to preserve Assault Rifle rounds.
- Hospital Lobby (1F): Upon entering, deal with the initial zombies. Head to the Reception Desk to find the Hospital Map. This is crucial for navigation.
- Doctor's Lounge (1F): Access this room from the lobby. You'll find a Green Herb and some Handgun Ammo. Be wary of the zombie inside.
- Security Room (1F): Located near the Doctor's Lounge. Inside, you'll find a Tape Recorder (examine it for a clue) and a Key Card. The Key Card is essential for accessing restricted areas.
- Operating Room (2F): Use the stairs to reach the second floor. The Operating Room is where you'll find the Vaccine Base. There are a few zombies here, so clear them out before collecting the item.
- Treatment Room (2F): This room contains the Vaccine Medium. Be prepared for a few zombies to ambush you as you enter.
- Laboratory (B1): After collecting both vaccine components, head to the basement. The Laboratory is where you'll synthesize the vaccine. You'll need to solve a simple puzzle involving adjusting the machine's settings (usually temperature and pressure) to combine the components. The correct settings are typically found in a memo or file within the hospital. Once synthesized, you'll have the Vaccine.
Dealing with Hunter Gammas
Hunter Gammas are a significant threat in the hospital. They can instantly kill Carlos with a single pounce if he's not careful. Here's how to handle them:
- Assault Rifle is Key: The Assault Rifle is your best friend against Hunter Gammas. A short burst to the head or body will usually stagger them, allowing you to follow up with more shots or escape.
- Maintain Distance: Try to engage Hunter Gammas from a distance. Their pounce attack has a limited range.
- Corridors vs. Rooms: In narrow corridors, it's often better to try and run past them if possible, especially if you're low on ammo. In larger rooms, you have more space to maneuver and shoot.
- Explosive Barrels: Keep an eye out for explosive barrels in some areas. Luring a Hunter Gamma near one and shooting the barrel can instantly eliminate it.
Resource Management Tips
Unlike Jill, Carlos does not have access to item boxes during his hospital segment. This means every item you pick up counts, and you need to be strategic about what you carry.
- Prioritize Ammo: Always pick up Assault Rifle Ammo and Handgun Ammo. You'll need it.
- Healing Items: Carry at least one or two healing items (Green Herbs, First Aid Sprays) at all times. You can combine Green Herbs to create more potent healing items (e.g., Green + Green = Mixed Herb (G+G)).
- Avoid Unnecessary Fights: If you can safely run past a zombie or a group of enemies without taking damage, do so. Conserving ammo is paramount.
- Check Every Room: Even seemingly empty rooms can hide crucial ammo or healing items. Thorough exploration is rewarded.
