Health Management & Healing
In the perilous streets of Raccoon City, maintaining Jill Valentine's health is paramount to survival. Unlike some other Resident Evil titles, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis often throws you into direct confrontations, making efficient health management a critical skill. This section will detail all healing items, their uses, and strategic advice for keeping Jill in fighting shape.
Understanding Jill's Health Status
Jill's health is indicated by her posture and the color of the "FINE" text in your inventory screen. Pay close attention to these visual cues:
- FINE (Green): Jill is at full health or has taken minimal damage. She moves and aims normally.
- CAUTION (Yellow): Jill has taken moderate damage. Her movement might be slightly slower, and she may occasionally clutch her side. This is your cue to consider healing, especially before entering new areas or boss fights.
- CAUTION (Orange): Jill is significantly wounded. Her movement is noticeably impaired, and she will frequently clutch her side. Healing is highly recommended at this stage.
- DANGER (Red): Jill is near death. Any further significant damage will result in a Game Over. Her movement is very slow, and she's constantly struggling. Heal immediately!
Healing Items and Their Applications
There are several types of healing items scattered throughout Raccoon City. Knowing their potency and when to use them is key.
Herbs
Herbs are your most common healing resource and can be combined to create more potent remedies. They are found almost everywhere, often in small planters or on shelves.
- Green Herb: Heals a small amount of damage, typically enough to move Jill from "CAUTION (Yellow)" to "FINE."
- Location Example: Several can be found in the alleyway near the beginning of the game, and in the Raccoon City Police Department's main hall.
- Blue Herb: Cures poison. It does not restore health.
- Location Example: Often found near areas with poisonous enemies like Drain Deimos or Giant Spiders, such as the back alley leading to the RPD or the Clock Tower.
- Red Herb: Has no effect on its own. Must be combined with a Green Herb or a mixture of Green Herbs to boost their healing power.
- Location Example: Less common than Green Herbs, but can be found in the Pharmacy on the main street or inside the Clock Tower.
Herb Combinations
Combining herbs is essential for maximizing their efficiency and saving inventory space.
- Green Herb + Green Herb: Heals a moderate amount of damage, often enough to go from "CAUTION (Orange)" to "FINE."
- Green Herb + Green Herb + Green Herb: Fully restores Jill's health from any status. This is one of your most valuable healing resources.
- Green Herb + Red Herb: Fully restores Jill's health from any status. This is the most efficient full heal, as it only uses two inventory slots.
- Green Herb + Green Herb + Red Herb: Fully restores Jill's health. While effective, it's generally better to save the Red Herb for a single Green Herb combination if possible.
- Green Herb + Blue Herb: Heals a small amount of damage AND cures poison. A very useful combination if you're both injured and poisoned.
- Green Herb + Green Herb + Blue Herb: Heals a moderate amount of damage AND cures poison.
- Green Herb + Green Herb + Green Herb + Blue Herb: Fully restores health AND cures poison.
- Green Herb + Red Herb + Blue Herb: Fully restores health AND cures poison. This is the ultimate healing combination, but uses three inventory slots.
First Aid Spray
The First Aid Spray is a single-use item that instantly restores Jill's health to "FINE" from any damage state, including "DANGER." It also cures poison. These are relatively rare and should be conserved for critical situations, such as boss battles or when you're in "DANGER" and lack other healing options.
- Location Example: Often found in safe rooms or near major encounters, such as the save room in the RPD or before the first Nemesis encounter.
Strategic Healing Tips
- Don't Overheal: Avoid using a full-healing item like a First Aid Spray or a G+R Herb when Jill is only in "CAUTION (Yellow)." Save these for when she's in "CAUTION (Orange)" or "DANGER." Use single Green Herbs for minor damage.
- Combine Herbs Strategically: Always combine herbs to save inventory space. A G+R Herb is superior to three separate Green Herbs for a full heal.
- Prioritize Poison Cure: If poisoned, cure it as soon as possible with a Blue Herb or a combined herb. Poison slowly drains your health, and the damage can accumulate quickly.
- Heal Before Boss Fights: Always enter a boss fight with Jill at full health. Nemesis encounters can be brutal, and starting at a disadvantage is a recipe for disaster.
- Utilize Item Boxes: Don't hoard all your healing items. Store excess herbs and First Aid Sprays in Item Boxes. This frees up inventory slots for key items and ammunition, and you can always retrieve them when needed.
- Know Your Environment: Pay attention to where healing items are located. Sometimes, it's worth taking a small detour to pick up a crucial Green Herb or a First Aid Spray.
- Consider Damage vs. Resources: Sometimes, taking a hit to conserve ammunition or avoid a more dangerous situation is acceptable, especially if you have ample healing. Conversely, using a powerful weapon to quickly dispatch an enemy might save you more health in the long run.
