Optional Areas & Exploration

While the main path of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is largely linear, Raccoon City offers several optional areas and detours that can yield valuable resources, lore, and even unique weapons. Taking the time to explore these locations can significantly ease your journey, especially on higher difficulties. Be warned, however, that these areas often come with their own set of dangers.

Downtown Raccoon City - Side Streets & Alleys

After your initial escape from the apartment building, the downtown area presents several branching paths. Don't rush directly to the Raccoon Police Department (RPD).

  • Back Alley (Near Bar Jack): Instead of heading straight down the main street, look for a narrow alleyway just past Bar Jack.
    • Enemies: Expect a few standard Zombies. They can be dispatched easily with your Handgun.
    • Items: You'll often find a box of Handgun Ammo and sometimes a Green Herb tucked away in crates or on the ground. This small detour is a quick way to top up your basic supplies.
  • Abandoned Storefronts (East of Main Street): Before reaching the RPD entrance, explore the boarded-up shops on the eastern side of the street.
    • Access: Some doors may be locked initially but become accessible after certain story triggers or with the right key. Keep an eye out for a loose board you can push through.
    • Items: Inside, you might discover a First Aid Spray, a box of Shotgun Shells (if you have the Shotgun), or a crucial File providing backstory on the outbreak.
    • Strategy: These areas are often tight, so be prepared for close-quarters combat. Use your quick turn to avoid being surrounded.

Raccoon Police Department - West Office & Storage

Even after acquiring the necessary items to progress, the RPD has a few hidden gems if you're willing to backtrack or explore thoroughly.

  • West Office (First Floor): After obtaining the Lockpick, return to the West Office.
    • Access: Use the Lockpick on the locked desk drawer.
    • Items: Inside, you'll find the M37 Shotgun. This powerful weapon is invaluable for dealing with groups of zombies or stronger enemies. Even if you already have the Shotgun, this provides additional ammo.
    • Strategy: The West Office is generally safe once cleared, but Nemesis can appear anywhere, so always be vigilant.
  • Storage Room (Second Floor): This room is often overlooked once its initial puzzle is solved.
    • Access: Requires the S.T.A.R.S. Card to unlock the door.
    • Items: Beyond the initial items, sometimes a hidden box of Grenade Rounds or a Blue Herb can be found in a corner or behind a stack of boxes. These are easily missed if you just grab the main objective item and leave.

Clock Tower Plaza - Side Paths

Before entering the Clock Tower itself, the surrounding plaza has a few nooks worth investigating.

  • Maintenance Alley (North of Plaza): Look for a narrow path leading away from the main plaza, often obscured by debris.
    • Enemies: Typically a few more resilient Zombies or even a Hunter Gamma if you're unlucky.
    • Items: This alley can hide a crucial Weapon Part (e.g., Shotgun Parts A or B), which can significantly upgrade your firepower. Also, look for Magnum Rounds, a rare and powerful ammo type.
    • Strategy: Be prepared for a fight. The tight space makes dodging difficult, so consider using a powerful weapon or a well-aimed headshot.

Hospital - Basement & Staff Quarters

The Hospital is a maze, and while the main path is clear, thorough exploration can yield significant benefits.

  • Basement Storage Room: After restoring power, return to the basement.
    • Access: The previously locked storage room can now be opened.
    • Items: This room often contains a large cache of supplies, including multiple boxes of Handgun Ammo, Shotgun Shells, and sometimes a First Aid Spray. It's a great place to restock before facing tougher challenges.
    • Strategy: Watch out for Drain Deimos or Lickers that might have spawned or moved into the area after power restoration.
  • Doctor's Office (Second Floor): This room is easily missed if you're focused on the main objectives.
    • Access: Requires the Doctor's Key, usually found in a nearby patient room or on a defeated enemy.
    • Items: Inside, you'll often find a Green Herb, a Blue Herb, and sometimes a File detailing Umbrella's experiments or a patient's tragic story.
