Scattered throughout Raccoon City are numerous files, diaries, and reports that piece together the story of the outbreak and the Umbrella Corporation's involvement. Collecting all files provides a deeper understanding of the lore and often reveals hints for puzzles or enemy weaknesses. There are a total of 30 files to find. Many are in plain sight, but some are hidden in less-traveled areas or require specific actions to reveal. Always examine every desk, shelf, and body you encounter. The game tracks your file collection, and finding them all contributes to a higher rank at the end of the game.
