Mercenaries Mode - General Strategy

Welcome to "The Mercenaries: Operation Mad Jackal"! This challenging mini-game is unlocked after completing the main story of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Your goal is to reach the designated exit point within a strict time limit, accumulating points by defeating enemies and rescuing civilians. The rewards are well worth the effort, offering powerful weapons for your main game playthroughs.

Character Selection & Loadouts

Each of the three available mercenaries – Carlos, Mikhail, and Nikolai – comes with a unique starting loadout and special abilities. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses is crucial for success.

  • Carlos: Starts with a M4A1 Assault Rifle, a Healing Spray, and a few Mixed Herbs. His high damage output and decent healing make him a good all-rounder, especially for beginners. Focus on headshots to conserve ammo.
  • Mikhail: Equipped with a powerful Rocket Launcher (with limited ammo), a Magnum, and a Healing Spray. Mikhail is excellent for clearing large groups of enemies or quickly dispatching tougher foes like Hunters. However, his slow movement and reload speed require careful positioning. Save the Rocket Launcher for critical moments.
  • Nikolai: The most challenging character, Nikolai begins with only a Handgun and a Combat Knife. His advantage lies in his ability to earn more bonus time for each enemy killed. This makes him ideal for advanced players who can consistently land headshots and utilize the knife for quick, low-risk kills on weaker zombies.

Time Management & Bonuses

Time is your most precious resource in Mercenaries Mode. You start with a limited timer, and every second counts. Here's how to maximize your time:

  • Enemy Kills: Each enemy you defeat adds a small amount of time to your clock. Prioritize quick, efficient kills. Headshots are key for conserving ammo and maximizing time bonuses.
  • Civilian Rescues: Throughout the map, you'll encounter civilians in distress. Rescuing them provides significant time bonuses and often valuable items.
    • First Civilian (Subway Entrance): Located near the start, usually in the alleyway leading to the Subway.
    • Second Civilian (Restaurant): Found inside the Restaurant, often surrounded by zombies.
    • Third Civilian (Sales Office): Typically in the Sales Office area, past the Raccoon Press building.
  • Bonus Items: Keep an eye out for glowing items on the ground. These can include extra time, ammo, or healing items.

Route Optimization & Item Locations

The Mercenaries map is a condensed version of Raccoon City. Learning the optimal path and key item locations will drastically improve your scores.

  1. Start (Subway Entrance): Immediately head towards the alleyway to rescue the first civilian. Collect any nearby ammo or healing items.
  2. Downtown Streets: Navigate through the initial zombie-infested streets. Be mindful of dogs and crows, which can quickly drain your health.
  3. Restaurant: Enter the Restaurant to rescue the second civilian. This area often contains a few zombies and sometimes a Hunter.
  4. Raccoon Press / Sales Office: Proceed through the Raccoon Press building and into the Sales Office. The third civilian is usually located here. This area is often heavily populated with zombies and sometimes Drain Deimos.
  5. Clock Tower Plaza: This open area can be dangerous, with multiple zombies and potentially a Hunter or two. Use the environment to your advantage, kiting enemies if necessary.
  6. Final Stretch (Clock Tower Interior): The final section leads into the Clock Tower. Be prepared for a final push of enemies before reaching the exit.

Combat Tips

  • Headshots: Always aim for the head. This not only conserves ammo but also dispatches enemies faster, granting more time bonuses.
  • Dodge Mechanic: Master the dodge mechanic! Press the action button just as an enemy attacks to perform a quick dodge, avoiding damage and potentially creating an opening for a counter-attack.
  • Knife Usage: The Combat Knife is surprisingly effective against single, slow-moving zombies, especially if you can get behind them. It's also a great way to conserve precious firearm ammo.
  • Explosive Barrels: Utilize the red explosive barrels scattered throughout the environment. Shooting them when enemies are nearby can clear groups quickly.
  • Nemesis Encounters: Nemesis will occasionally appear. While you can defeat him for a significant time bonus, it's often more strategic to simply evade him and continue towards the exit, especially if you're low on health or ammo. If you do engage, focus on high-damage weapons like the Magnum or Rocket Launcher.

Earning Rewards

Your final score determines the reward you receive. Aim for an "A" rank or higher to unlock the best weapons:

  • A Rank (or higher): Earns you the Infinite Ammo Rocket Launcher, a game-changer for subsequent playthroughs.
  • B Rank: Unlocks the Infinite Ammo Gatling Gun.
  • C Rank: Grants the Infinite Ammo Assault Rifle.

Practice makes perfect. Don't get discouraged by initial failures. Learn the enemy spawns, civilian locations, and optimal routes, and you'll be racking up those "A" ranks in no time!
