Mercenaries Mode Scoring & Ranks

Welcome to "The Mercenaries: Operation Mad Jackal!" This challenging mini-game is unlocked after completing the main story of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Your objective is to race through a gauntlet of Raccoon City's most dangerous inhabitants, rescue civilians, and reach the designated exit point before time runs out. Your performance is measured by your score, which directly impacts the rank you achieve and the valuable rewards you earn.

Scoring Mechanics

Every action you take in Mercenaries Mode contributes to or detracts from your final score. Understanding these mechanics is crucial for maximizing your earnings and achieving those coveted S-Ranks.

  • Enemy Kills: Each enemy type has a base point value. Stronger enemies yield more points. Headshots and critical hits often provide bonus points.
    • Zombies: 100 points
    • Cerberus: 150 points
    • Hunters: 300 points
    • Drain Deimos: 200 points
    • Brain Suckers: 250 points
    • Nemesis (all forms): Significant points, but also a major time sink. Only engage if you are confident in a quick kill or have a specific strategy.
  • Civilian Rescues: This is your primary source of bonus time and a substantial score boost. Each civilian you successfully escort to the exit adds a fixed amount of time to your clock and a significant score bonus.
    • Civilian 1 (Brad Vickers): Found near the start, in front of the Police Station. Rescuing him adds 60 seconds and 1,000 points.
    • Civilian 2 (Dario Rosso): Located in the warehouse near the alleyway where you first encounter Nemesis in the main game. Rescuing him adds 90 seconds and 1,500 points.
    • Civilian 3 (Mikhail Victor): Found injured on the trolley car. Rescuing him adds 120 seconds and 2,000 points.
  • Time Bonus: The remaining time on your clock at the moment you reach the exit is converted into bonus points. The more time you have left, the higher this bonus. This is why efficient movement and quick kills are paramount.
  • Damage Taken: Taking damage reduces your final score. Aim for flawless runs or minimize hits to maintain a high score.
  • Healing Item Usage: Using First Aid Sprays or Herbs also slightly reduces your score. Try to conserve healing items or only use them when absolutely necessary.

Time Management & Bonuses

Time is your most precious resource in Mercenaries Mode. Every second counts, and strategic time management is key to high scores.

  • Starting Time: You begin with a fixed amount of time, typically 2:00 minutes.
  • Time Bonuses from Kills: Certain enemies, particularly stronger ones, will drop small time bonuses (e.g., +5 seconds, +10 seconds) upon defeat. Prioritize these enemies if you're running low on time.
  • Civilian Time Bonuses: As mentioned above, rescuing civilians provides the largest time injections. Prioritize these rescues!
  • Route Optimization: Plan your route to efficiently engage enemies, collect time bonuses, and rescue civilians without backtracking excessively.

Ranks and Rewards

Your final score determines your rank, and each rank unlocks a specific reward that can be used in the main game. Aim for the highest ranks to get the best gear!

  • Rank D: 0 - 2,000 points. No reward.
  • Rank C: 2,001 - 5,000 points. No reward.
  • Rank B: 5,001 - 8,000 points. No reward.
  • Rank A: 8,001 - 10,000 points. Unlocks the Assault Rifle with unlimited ammunition.
  • Rank S: 10,001+ points. Unlocks the Rocket Launcher with unlimited ammunition.

To unlock all rewards, you'll need to achieve an S-Rank with each of the three playable Mercenaries characters: Carlos, Mikhail, and Nikolai. Each character has a unique starting loadout and slightly different strengths, requiring varied strategies.

Character-Specific Strategies for S-Rank

Carlos Oliveira

Carlos starts with the M4A1 Assault Rifle, a powerful weapon for crowd control, and a few healing items. His agility makes him excellent for dodging.

  • Early Game: Use the Assault Rifle to quickly clear the initial zombie groups. Prioritize headshots to conserve ammo and maximize points.
  • Civilian 1 (Brad): Rescue Brad immediately. His location is straightforward.
  • Mid Game: Head towards the warehouse. The Assault Rifle is effective against the Drain Deimos and Brain Suckers you'll encounter.
  • Civilian 2 (Dario): Rescue Dario. Be wary of the zombies and Cerberus in the alley leading to him.
  • Late Game: Proceed to the trolley car. Use careful aim to take down Hunters and other threats.
  • Civilian 3 (Mikhail): Rescue Mikhail. The area around the trolley can be dense with enemies; consider using a Grenade if you have one.
  • Exit: With the time bonuses from all civilians, you should have ample time to reach the exit. Focus on quick kills and avoiding damage.
Mikhail Victor

Mikhail is a powerhouse, starting with the Shotgun and a Grenade Launcher (Flame Rounds). He's slower but can dish out massive damage.

  • Early Game: The Shotgun is excellent for close-range zombie groups. Aim for multiple enemies with a single blast.
  • Grenade Launcher Usage: Save your Flame Rounds for Hunters or groups of tougher enemies. A well-placed shot can clear a room and save valuable time.
  • Civilian 1 (Brad): Rescue Brad. Use the Shotgun to clear the path efficiently.
  • Dealing with Nemesis: Mikhail's heavy firepower makes him the best choice for engaging Nemesis if you choose to. A few well-placed Shotgun blasts or a Flame Round can stun him, allowing you to run past or finish him off for bonus points.
  • Civilian 2 & 3: Follow a similar path to Carlos, using the Shotgun for most encounters and the Grenade Launcher for high-threat areas.
  • Movement: Mikhail's slower speed means you need to be more deliberate with your movements and avoid getting cornered.
Nikolai Zinoviev

Nikolai is the most challenging character, starting with only a Handgun and a Combat Knife. He relies heavily on precision and evasion.

  • Headshots are Paramount: With only a Handgun, every shot must count. Aim exclusively for headshots on zombies to conserve ammo and maximize damage.
  • Knife Strategy: The Combat Knife can be surprisingly effective against single zombies if you master the dodge-and-stab technique. Use it to save handgun ammo.
  • Civilian 1 (Brad): Rescue Brad. This is crucial for the initial time boost.
  • Scavenging: Nikolai is the most reliant on finding additional weapons and ammo from defeated enemies or item boxes. Keep an eye out for dropped Shotgun ammo or Grenade Rounds.
  • Evasion: Mastering the quick turn and dodge mechanic is essential for Nikolai. Avoid unnecessary confrontations, especially with Hunters or Nemesis, unless you have superior firepower.
  • Patience: Nikolai's runs will often be slower and more methodical. Don't rush into situations you can't handle with your limited arsenal.
  • Prioritize Time Bonuses: Since your kill speed is lower, actively seek out enemies that drop time bonuses to keep your clock ticking.

By understanding these scoring mechanics, optimizing your routes, and tailoring your strategy to each mercenary, you'll be well on your way to earning those S-Ranks and unlocking all the powerful bonus weapons Resident Evil 3: Nemesis has to offer!
